Una historia brutal con varios nuevos personajes entre los que destacan por mérito propio Mr Éxtasis y Mr Angustia, dos asesinos a sueldo que merecerían su propio spin-off. Empezó muy bien, luego mejoró, en cierto momento empezó a hacérseme largo de narices, varias veces estuve tentado de abandonarlo, después volvió a despegar y ha habido momentos en que me ha dejado sin respiración y me lo he llorado mucho porque los momentos epicoemotivos son muy, muy potentes. ¿Me ha gustado? Bastante. ¿Lo recomiendo? Sí, pero sabiendo que no es en absoluto para todo el mundo. ¿Lo volvería a leer? JAJAJA NO QUÉ DICES. Me gusta más haberlo leído que el hecho en sí de leerlo porque, aunque la verdadera fortaleza del libro está en los diálogos y las situaciones en las que se ven los personajes, la autora se pierde durante demasiaaadas páginas en describirnos los pasillos lóbregos impregnados de huesos y en contarnos cómo funciona la tanatoenergía de las narices. Entiendo que el worldbuilding de scifi y fantasía no se ace solo ai k acerlo, pero VAYA ROLLO.
Eso sí, la mezcla imposible de épica intergaláctica, novelas de Agatha Christie, humor deslenguadamente macarra y lesbianas nigromantes cachondas que van a Masterchef (gracias, César, por esta última metáfora tan acertada) funciona sorprendentemente bien: mis carcajadas se han debido escuchar en Port Moresby (Papúa Nueva Guinea) y he tenido que echar varias veces la ropa en la secadora por lo mucho que he llorado.

Me encantan los mundos que crea, su habilidad para unir referencias variopintas para ofrecernos algo al mismo tiempo clásico y diferente, su intención de ir siempre un poco más allá de lo que ya hemos leído antes, sus personajes poliédricos que a pesar de sus traumas (o quizás debido a ellos) insisten en seguir adelante a pesar de todo. Este libro es un excelente ejemplo de todo ello, ya que Vilar se marca aquí un retelling intergaláctico queer de la Salomé de Oscar Wilde (una de las obras más cerdas de la historia de la dramaturgia universal, es algo impresionante cómo sigue vigente 130 años después de haber sido escrita) con ecos de los cuadros de Moreau y de Lolita de Nabokov entre otros. Y, marca de la casa de la autora, esta mezcla a priori imposible funciona como un tiro. Muy, muy bien.

Por supuesto, ante tal cantidad ha habido de todo como en botica. A veces da la sensación de que algunes autores piensan que mezclar un poco de todo va a hacer que funcione la cosa, pero ejem. Entiendo perfectamente la razón de ser de esta mezcla que afortunadamente está teniendo tanto éxito, y precisamente por eso me da un poco de penilla que a veces algunos de esos cómics sean un totum revolutum que, por mucha representación que tengan de personajes queer, discas, racializados, neurodivergentes, etc etc, todo se quede en una buena idea (a veces ni eso) y una terrible ejecución. La representación es una herramienta para la historia, no puede ser la historia en sí porque una buena trama necesita de muchas más cosas y quienes pertenecemos a esas comunidades no queremos que nos tokenizen, muchas gracias por venir a mi Ted Talk.
Sirva esta rant para explicar cómo Hollow es todo lo contrario porque aquí todos los elementos encajan a la perfección: en este retelling de la leyenda de Sleepy Hollow la trama es adictiva, los personajes están (muy) bien construidos, me he reído muchísimo y he pegado algunos grititos con esta pandilla tipo Scooby Doo con un villano tan malvado como ridículo. Lo mismo con las ilustraciones (aunque para mi gusto la portada no está a la altura del libro), con ese tono de dibujo animado cozy que le va a la perfección. La trama de sustitos licántropos deja también bastante que desear. Y un favor que tengo que pedir: por favor, personas que hacéis la escribición en cómics infantiles y juveniles, dejad de redimir a los bullies y a los abusadores de todo tipo en escenas de "oh, oh, es que no sé muy bien cómo lidiar con mis sentimientos, te he tratado como una repuñetera mi3rda todo el rato y si ahora me porto como una persona medianamente decente por diez segundos tienes que perdonarme". ...more

Hace unos cuantos siglos, el príncipe heredero de Brunéi escucha de su aya una terrible y bella leyenda sobre otros príncipes herederos que vivieron mHace unos cuantos siglos, el príncipe heredero de Brunéi escucha de su aya una terrible y bella leyenda sobre otros príncipes herederos que vivieron mucho tiempo antes que él. Paralelamente, un pescador del siglo XXI llamado Lisan regresa a su pueblo ocho años después de abandonar a su esposa, convencido de que desciende del mismo linaje real de todos esos príncipes.
A lo largo del libro estas tres tramas se van entrelazando aunque las dos primeras son un mero marco narrativo para la de Lisan, que es el protagonista absoluto del libro. Lo cual es una pena, porque su trama no solo es la más aburrida sino que él es un señoro insoportable cuyas motivaciones no quedan del todo claras porque él lo sabe todo y por tanto los deseos y los sentimientos de la gente que le rodea dan igual. Ese ha sido el motivo de que me haya costado tanto llegar hasta el final, lo que me ha dado bastante rabia porque las otras dos tramas -inspiradas en leyendas de Brunéi-, a pesar de no tener tanto peso son excepcionales y con algunos giros realmente buenos.
¿Lo recomiendo? Sí, pero sabiendo que te vas a encontrar con un tipo que te va a caer bastante regu y al que estás deseando que la serpiente monstruosa milenaria y sedienta de sangre se lo coma de una vez.
Algunas partes me han parecido lentas, demasiadas escenas de pensar con quién encamarse. Eso sí, el final es tan estupendo que me lo compensa todo. Solo diré que Ru es una versión melancólica y más madura de Steven Universe pero con dragones en vez de gemas y con una Connie (aquí llamada Alice) que nos va a romper el corazón para rellenarlo con una luz tibia y delicada.
Cuánto amor hay en estas páginas y cuánta soledad e incertidumbre provocadas por el desarraigo. Y bien que disfruta la tía, porque no dejan de pasar cosas todo el tiempo. Sé que el componente de romance es inseparable de este tipo de novelas, pero me saca muchísimo que estando a punto de librar la guerra del fin del mundo todos los personajes estén más salidos que el pico de un portaminas de 0.5. Por no hablar de Mal, claro, a quien el nombre le viene ni que pintado porque no se puede ser más tóxico. Sin duda alguna, el gran personaje de este libro es Nikolai, que cada vez que sale lo demás no importa. Muy bien la labor de Nuria Samsó narrando el audiolibro. ...more
