Por supuesto, ante tal cantidad ha habido de todo como en botica. A veces da la sensación de que algunes autores piensan que mezclar un poco de todo va a hacer que funcione la cosa, pero ejem. Entiendo perfectamente la razón de ser de esta mezcla que afortunadamente está teniendo tanto éxito, y precisamente por eso me da un poco de penilla que a veces algunos de esos cómics sean un totum revolutum que, por mucha representación que tengan de personajes queer, discas, racializados, neurodivergentes, etc etc, todo se quede en una buena idea (a veces ni eso) y una terrible ejecución. La representación es una herramienta para la historia, no puede ser la historia en sí porque una buena trama necesita de muchas más cosas y quienes pertenecemos a esas comunidades no queremos que nos tokenizen, muchas gracias por venir a mi Ted Talk.
Sirva esta rant para explicar cómo Hollow es todo lo contrario porque aquí todos los elementos encajan a la perfección: en este retelling de la leyenda de Sleepy Hollow la trama es adictiva, los personajes están (muy) bien construidos, me he reído muchísimo y he pegado algunos grititos con esta pandilla tipo Scooby Doo con un villano tan malvado como ridículo. Lo mismo con las ilustraciones (aunque para mi gusto la portada no está a la altura del libro), con ese tono de dibujo animado cozy que le va a la perfección. Tras la muerte de Bob, Will descubre un mapa del tesoro hecho por él cuando estaba en el instituto y decide ir a buscarlo a pesar de las fuertes nevadas que están asolando Hawkins. Es un precioso homenaje a Los Goonies con una pizquita de El señor de los anillos (recordemos que el actor que interpreta a Bob era el prota de la primera y también Sam en la segunda). No hay nada de terror, no aparecen Eleven ni el demogorgon ni nada sobrenatural pero no hace falta porque lo importante es contar una sencilla y dulce historia de amistad y búsquedas del tesoro. Paralelamente, un pescador del siglo XXI llamado Lisan regresa a su pueblo ocho años después de abandonar a su esposa, convencido de que desciende del mismo linaje real de todos esos príncipes.
A lo largo del libro estas tres tramas se van entrelazando aunque las dos primeras son un mero marco narrativo para la de Lisan, que es el protagonista absoluto del libro. Lo cual es una pena, porque su trama no solo es la más aburrida sino que él es un señoro insoportable cuyas motivaciones no quedan del todo claras porque él lo sabe todo y por tanto los deseos y los sentimientos de la gente que le rodea dan igual. Ese ha sido el motivo de que me haya costado tanto llegar hasta el final, lo que me ha dado bastante rabia porque las otras dos tramas -inspiradas en leyendas de Brunéi-, a pesar de no tener tanto peso son excepcionales y con algunos giros realmente buenos.
¿Lo recomiendo? Sí, pero sabiendo que te vas a encontrar con un tipo que te va a caer bastante regu y al que estás deseando que la serpiente monstruosa milenaria y sedienta de sangre se lo coma de una vez.
Algunas partes me han parecido lentas, demasiadas escenas de pensar con quién encamarse. Eso sí, el final es tan estupendo que me lo compensa todo. Karna es uno de mis personajes favoritos del Mahabharata. Es el tercer cómic de la colección Amar Chitra Katha que me leo (caerán muchos más) y por primera vez noto que el resumen no cojea por ninguna parte sino que se entiende todo sin problema alguno. Las primeras historias me han parecido más adecuadas al formato usado, ya que los últimos avatares de Vishnu (Rama, Krishna y Buda) son historias demasiado complejas como para poder resumirse en siete u ocho páginas. Lo bueno es que entre las notas a pie de pagina, los editores indican los números específicos de la colección monográficos para cada uno de esos personajes. Así que me leeré alguno de ellos para profundizar un poco más en alguno de esos avatares de Vishnu....more

Esta novelita parte de una sinopsis así de despiadada para convertirse en una leyenda que no es una leyenda, una distopía que no es una distopía, un western que no es un western, una historia de aventuras que no es una historia de aventuras, un relato coming of age que no… Bueno, ya me entendéis. Sin embargo, es muy difícil engancharse a la lectura porque el estilo del libro se parece más a una versión novelada de la página de Wikipedia sobre la independencia. Es una mera enumeración de sucesos narrados en plan "Así fue como me enteré de que el nuevo líder de los independentistas era el cura Morelos y de que planeaba un ataque a Valladolid, con lo que me dirigí allí para evitar dicho ataque. De camino me encontré con un hombre que me explicó las últimas noticias de España, nada más y nada menos que un grupo de políticos de todas las ideologías se habían juntado en Cádiz, donde tras muchas disquisiciones en las que su único punto en común era que odiaban a José Bonaparte, decidieron crear una Constitución liberal que era la más avanzada que yo jamás había visto. Por ejemplo, el artículo número tal de dicha Constitución decía que cualquier persona nacida en cualquier colonia de España era española. Reflexioné mucho sobre aquello antes de seguir camino hacia Valladolid, dejando atrás la ciudad de Guanajuato en la que había visto la cabeza decapitada del cura Hidalgo, anterior líder independentista que unos meses antes había pronunciado el grito de Dolores en el pueblo del mismo nombre, hecho aquel que daría inicio a la guerra en la que andábamos metidos" Y así 300 y pico páginas. Muchos de ellos tienen un componente de magia y fantasía, como es el caso de este The Montague Twins, que me ha ENCANTADO.
Estoy cansado de cómics preciosistas que no cuentan nada, prefiero una historia potente con unos dibujos que dejen un poco que desear. En este caso, sin embargo, hay un equilibrio perfecto entre el dibujo, la historia y, sobre todo, el tono: se trata de un cómic muy maduro que apuesta por tratar al público young adult como más adult que young. Hay cierta sobriedad muy bien combinada con humor, magia y misterio, como una versión actualizada, profunda y queer de los Hardy Boys que tanto éxito tuvieron en Norteamérica. Una maravilla, de verdad. Me voy de cabeza a leer el segundo. ...more

Es un mundo afortunadamente cada vez más amplio en el que, como es lógico, Llevo un tiempo leyendo todos los cómics queer cozy que caen en mis manos. Es un mundo afortunadamente cada vez más amplio en el que, como es lógico, hay cosas buenas, cosas reguleras y obras maestras. Mooncakes no entra en esta última categoría pero tiene algo que lo hace realmente especial. El estilo de dibujo no es el mejor del mundo ni la historia es la repanocha, lo que hay es un cariño inmenso a los personajes y un despliegue muy tierno de cuidados y autocuidados. Es una historia young adult de dos chiques sáfiques que se reencuentran y retoman la relación que nunca llegaron a tener, y también -y sobre todo- es la historia de dos brujitas ancianas y deslenguadas que se aman, adoran a su familia y a su familia escogida, y cuando sacan un rato libre de su tienda de magia se dedican a patear culos para proteger a su nieta disca y su novie no binarie.
