La identidad, el idioma, la nostalgia de un lugar en el que no has vivido, la nostalgia de un lugar en el que has vivido demasiadas cosas, el sentirse fuera de lugar en todos sitios, la incertidumbre sobre el futuro… Le autore presenta todo esto y mucho más en un cómic middle grade avanzado / young adult lleno de representación y ternura. Incluso habla de un manifiesto firmado en los 70 por autores de alto copete (Sartre, Beauvoir, Aragon…) pidiendo que se rebajara la edad de consentimiento sexual.

Sin embargo, es muy difícil engancharse a la lectura porque el estilo del libro se parece más a una versión novelada de la página de Wikipedia sobre la independencia. Es una mera enumeración de sucesos narrados en plan "Así fue como me enteré de que el nuevo líder de los independentistas era el cura Morelos y de que planeaba un ataque a Valladolid, con lo que me dirigí allí para evitar dicho ataque. De camino me encontré con un hombre que me explicó las últimas noticias de España, nada más y nada menos que un grupo de políticos de todas las ideologías se habían juntado en Cádiz, donde tras muchas disquisiciones en las que su único punto en común era que odiaban a José Bonaparte, decidieron crear una Constitución liberal que era la más avanzada que yo jamás había visto. Por ejemplo, el artículo número tal de dicha Constitución decía que cualquier persona nacida en cualquier colonia de España era española. Reflexioné mucho sobre aquello antes de seguir camino hacia Valladolid, dejando atrás la ciudad de Guanajuato en la que había visto la cabeza decapitada del cura Hidalgo, anterior líder independentista que unos meses antes había pronunciado el grito de Dolores en el pueblo del mismo nombre, hecho aquel que daría inicio a la guerra en la que andábamos metidos" Y así 300 y pico páginas. Me ha puesto muy triste, no es en absoluto una lectura fácil porque algunos momentos son muy duros, especialmente cuando habla de cómo se autopercibe como una criatura monstruosa al creerse todos los insultos racistas que recibe continuamente en el colegio y, más tarde, en el instituto. Charlot ocupa buena parte del libro, pero la protagonista verdadera es la librería ya que el editor abandonó Argelia en 1961 y su historia se entrelaza con la del anciano argelino que trabajó en “Nuestras riquezas” una vez que tras la independencia argelina se convirtió en biblioteca. Y también con la historia del joven a quien en 2017 le piden que se deshaga de los libros porque el propietario del local va a abrir una tienda de buñuelos. La autora construye así un fresco para hablarnos de las masacres del gobierno francés contra la población argelina durante la guerra de independencia. Uno de esos libros necesarios para aprender lo que normalmente no nos cuentan sobre el lado oscuro de Occidente. ...more

Pero el libro en sí me ha costado horrores terminarlo, si no hubiera sido por esa escena final le habría puesto solo dos estrellas en vez de tres. Mucho lirismo, mucha metáfora y mucho proponer situaciones que no se resuelven nunca para que parezca que el libro tiene algo parecido a una trama. Me pregunto si habría tenido tanto éxito si la historia hubiera sido sobre un niño cualquiera de esa época (o de cualquier otra), y no sobre el hijo de Shakespeare....more

Tania de Rozario se ha marcado una colección de ensayos autobiográficos espeluznantes sobre la realidad LGTBQIA+ en Singapur, un país en el que el sexo entre hombres fue delito hasta 2022 (sí, has leído bien, dos mil veintidós). El libro arranca sin contemplaciones: dos meses antes de cumplir doce años, la autora fue exorcizada durante siete horas por su madre y unos compañeros de su iglesia evangelista para desterrar al demonio que la niña llevaba dentro, solo porque le gustaba vestir ropa masculina.
Algunos ensayos me han interesado menos, no porque sean flojos sino porque tratan temas tan universales (una adolescente a quien le gusta su compañera de colegio, por ejemplo), que siento que ya los he leído en otros sitios, mientras que los específicos sobre Singapur (la Isla de los Monstruos del título) me han presentado una realidad que me era tan ajena que no he podido dejar de leer. Merece mucho la pena leer el libro pausadamente, leyendo un ensayo y reflexionar sobre él antes de entrar con el siguiente. Además, me ha dado la ocasión de conocer la obra de Cyril Wong, un poeta singapurense del que me quedo con una cita extraordinaria que también resonó mucho a De Rozario: “I still feel like I’m afloat in a nightmare that no longer frightens me”.

El libro comienza con su llegada a Bangkok y cómo le retiran el pasaporte para, a partir de ahí, comenzar a narrar su vida y la situación de las mujeres en Arabia Saudí y terminar con su llegada a Toronto siendo recibida en el aeropuerto por la Ministra de Asuntos Exteriores. Algunos momentos son durísimos pero se agradece que huya de la narrativa de telefilm de lágrima fácil. Al contrario, hay momentos bastante terribles muy pasados por encima y se entiende a la perfección por qué la autora no se centra en ellos. No me gusta nada el adjetivo “necesario” para calificar un libro por haberse convertido en un lugar común, pero sí creo que este lo es para conocer de primera mano el horror, la deshumanización y la violencia sistémica que sufren las mujeres en Arabia Saudí. ...more
