This is absolutely going to be a must-read for anyone who loves Minecraft, but especially middle grade and early YA readers! As someone who has loved Minecraft for a long time but hasn't played it very recently, reading this totally made me want to dive into a new game. It's such a fun story, and it adds in some great additional elements, like how hard moving to a new place is, the way distance can affect friendships (and what we can do to help our friends not feel alone or neglected), and how valuable it can be to add new friends to the mix, too. These characters are really sweet and I enjoyed how diverse the cast is, with multiple POC characters, a minor f/f relationship blossoming, and a character who goes by they/them pronouns. I can't wait to add this to our collection!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Super simple graphic novel. You don’t need to have played the game to understand most of it. The art style was cute and I like how they mixed the round? Art style with the blockiness of Minecraft. I do wish it was longer but that’s not that big of an issue. I did enjoy the lgbt rep tho that was pretty nice and surprising.

I did like this short graphic novel based on the game Minecraft. It was a very fast read that I finished this morning. I wanted to immerse myself more into the spirit of Minecraft to maybe get a better understanding for my students' obsession with this game. I did play Minecraft myself once and I understand why people like playing it but I never owned it.
I found this graphic novel to be a cute little story about a group of friends that sets out for a new adventure. I liked the way they interacted and that they aimed to keep in contact with the main character who moved across the country. Really enjoyed the way Minecraft was displayed in the graphic novel and would like to read the rest of the series.

I can’t rate this because I don’t know/care enough about Minecraft to determine its value. But my 3rd grader asked me to read it. Underneath the gaming stuff is a cute story about new and old friendships.

So glad I was pressed into reading this by 9 and 10 year olds because wrapped up in the Minecraft package is a charming friendship story with queer characters!!

I’ve read this to the child I watch twice now in two days because he keeps asking me to but I’ll just add it once lmao. I enjoyed it! There are some mechanics slightly wrong with the Minecraft elements and the ender dragon looked a little wonky in my opinion.
But in general I really enjoyed this. Also there’s age appropriate sapphic representation which absolutely blew my mind because I was not expecting that (especially cause of the fact that it’s a book from his school’s library and they’re currently doing one of those stupid book bans).

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. It was a cute book

Graley’s art is always cute but the story and characters, their “adventures” and interactions? Dull and unimaginative. Wish I’d have waited to get his at the library instead of rushing out for it for our son as soon as it was published. MEH.

Friendship, Minecraft, a quest, and more!

I wanted to read this book and I was delighted when my library had it… In Dutch though, but I will take it! The biggest reason why I was eager to read it is because of Sarah Graley who just has this amazing style!

In this one, and if the names are off that is because I am using the Dutch edition’s names, David has moved houses, but thankfully he lives in this age and day so he can pop online to see all his friends. And they all gather in Minecraft at the base they made. I just loved it and I loved seeing how his friends tried to make David happy. Because he isn’t having fun at his new school, no friends, and he just wants to be home.

I just loved seeing Minecraft and seeing the friends have the best of time there. Making all sorts of things (I just adored their base) and going on dangerous and scary quests that most probably won’t try out yet. It was all very exciting and I was happy I could come on the quest with them to the End, and to other places. While I still have no motivation to actually play the game, I do love reading about the world and everything that you can do there. So many adventures!

There was a moment of drama with David when things went wrong with those stones, and I was worried this would be a big thing, thankfully things are solved relatively fast so I was happy with that.

Later on David even finds some people from his new school and I was so happy to see that happen because that meant he may find his place in his new home/new world. I also loved that his friends also accepted this trio.

I just LOVED LOVED Carice and Lisa! They were so cute together, made an epic duo together, kicking butt left and right, and I was shipping them like mad.

And then there is the gorgeous and fun and lovely art by Sarah Graley and well, I guess you guys can guess that I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it. She has such a fun and expressive style and I loved seeing her version of Minecraft.

I am also happy with the extras at the end. Sketches, details on characters, covers, and more.

All in all, this is one book I very much enjoyed and which I would recommend to all. I will definitely be adding the English version to my shelves when I can.

Cute art style, but the story and characters are so incredibly generic.
Nothing special and besides the art, quite forgettable.

The book is very entertaining to read; however, there is some inaccurate information. I am aware the book is outdated it didn’t bother me too much, I have to continue reading to find out more as this is my first time reading the graphic novel.

I’m more curious why Tyler gotten upset I understand he went to a new school and haven’t gained any friends yet, until the end of the comic, but he got more upset because the wither have been formed with no control by Evan? It makes me question Tyler development as the story goes on.

The dragon egg cannot be held, of course it’s an old update, but it some how bothered me when reading the story but I still loved it.

Gracie and Candace, these two have good chemistry together and I can’t wait to learn more about them continuing on the volume, hopefully there is a volume that is dedicated to just them.

I rate it 4/5 stars, interesting graphic novel as people are wanting to start the game or even people read on their adventure stories, I -1 star because of the inaccuracy of the game itself but I still love the novel!

Alright. For me personally this is a 3 at most. Mainly because I honestly have so many reservations about kids getting most of their social interaction via a video game. I also don't find the adventures within Minecraft particularly interesting. What did I expect though when this is a graphic novel literally about the game Minecraft?

What I do know though is that I know several kids that would greatly enjoy this book! And it had many positive aspects. The diverse cast of characters of every race and sexual orientation reminds me a lot of The Cardboard Kingdom. And like the book just mentioned, it's just a bunch of kids having an awesome time doing something they love. So for that, I have to give it credit.

I'll see if I can make sure to have it on the shelf next year for some of those reluctant readers. Or lets be real, those readers who are just obsessed with this game in general.

Chose to read this since graphic novels are popular and I was trying to pick out books for my brothers kids (think 5th grader). Minecraft is popular and the book had high ratings as well as being recommended as summer reading for kids that might not be that interested in reading.
This graphic novel literally about the game Minecraft. The graphics were nice. I really liked the page creation info after the story finished! The message about new and old friends was good ... "like how hard moving to a new place is, the way distance can affect friendships (and what we can do to help our friends not feel alone or neglected), and how valuable it can be to add new friends to the mix, too."
Interesting choice to throw a LBGT side story in to the book. Minor f/f new friendship and one character that goes by they/them pronouns (I seem to be running across this a lot this past year).

We're The Boss Mobs Now!

In Minecraft Volume One a Kid named Tyler is going through adventures with his friends. From completing a Beacon to the slaying the Ender Dragon, this little book has Minecraft all over it without all the blocks distracting us from the story itself. I'd also like to say I really appreciate that it has a drawing process at the back so we can see how the illustrations in the book came to be.

Favorite Part: Free the End
Problem: Tyler has to be in a place far away from his friends and can only communicate by Minecraft and texting
Main Character(s): Tyler and the Crew
Mobs are all around and the Crew needs to defeat them, especially the Ender Dragon

This starts off with a bit of a misdirect, introducing our protagonist in the real world, but shortly delves into Minecraft proper, where the rest of the story takes place. It's a gentle tale of a group of friends working together to reach the elite areas of Minecraft (the Ender Dragon), with little really conflict in the group and a bit of action in the story without being overwhelmingly deep in Minecraft to turn off casual readers, but still with enough to keep devoted players entertained. It's a perfectly fine story that uses its setting well. It probably won't stick with you long after reading it, but it's a nice enough diversion.

Read to my 5 year old who loves anything Minecraft. We're in a few novels right now, so it's nice having a book with pictures. Although I wouldn't say it's age appropriate, having the pictures is a nice addition, as the other chapter books we read are also not age appropriate and don't have photos. Side note... Why no Minecraft books for K-2? We read this in one sitting on my Kindle for tablet. Awesome drawings and a good story about relationships and a sweet group of friends. Interesting choice to throw a LBGT side story in, but we don't mind that in our house. 💞🏳️‍🌈

Pretty good, although I have very limited Minecraft knowledge (=PARENT) I was able to follow the hero's quest okay.

I liked that the girls were the adventurers and the boys were happier at the base, working on building things. It seemed to me that they were a bit too young to be asking each other on "a date." On a closer inspection of the text, the kids' ages aren't ever specifically mentioned. I just assumed they were 3rd-5th grades. What do I know?

I read this for my library's first online kids' graphic novel bookclub, I'll update with a review from the kids. :)

My 7 year old son loved this, and I enjoyed reading it to him even though I have no interest in Minecraft. I didn't know anything about the controversy surrounding it, but it wasn't a big deal to me or my son. He said, "Dad, I didn't know girls could go on a date with each other," and I said, "Yep, they can" and we kept reading. I was all ready for some great conversations or questions, but he didn't bring it up again. I wish I could say the same about Minecraft. :(

Short graphic novel for ages 8-12 (story is 71 pages) who play Minecraft. I was able to follow the story without knowing the ins and outs of Minecraft, but it would have meant much more to me to know. It's a quick adventure with 5 diverse friends. My main takeaway is that everyone was so nice and kind. After the story, there are several pages of information with illustrations and commentary on the creation process.

Quick and Easy read—probably easier if you play Minecraft and know all the terms they are talking about. It’s clear this was meant for someone who is well versed in the game. As someone who doesn’t play Minecraft, it was difficult for me to care about anything they were talking about. I’ll have to see what my sister thinks and give a rating based on her opinions.

I'm not a big follower of minecraft. Hoopla had a promotion for bonus borrows so I checked this ebook out without using one of my 8 borrows of the month. I was surprised that Microsoft bought the company. The story goes beyond minecraft and shows the community and friendship that can be found through playing Minecraft. This book should be enjoyable to Minecraft players.

This is too cute.

I love it so much. Became one of my kids favorite books. I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE the sapphic representation. Kids need to see love in all its forms and this book does it perfectly.

I didn't know it'd have LGBTQ+ Rep but I love it and the whole book is just a gem. My kids now anxiously await the next books.
