I get that Victor is super traumatized and has to pretend to hate everyone to survive. But I wish we the reader got a chance to see him thaw out of that. It's all just "I hate you" until the epilogue where he's just like "having someone I can trust to support me is awesome"
Interesting for me to see Gray like this after listening to Make Me Fall before....more

Her characters and plots are SO WELL DEVELOPED. The emotional depth is amazing. This book wasn't perfect but I couldn't put it down, and I'm glad that it's longer than most romance books. I really hate MCs who are prostitutes cause they make no sense; I love doing it or it's no big deal and then, you saved me, thank god I never have to go back to that life. I also feel like accepting sex as rent is coercion. But these are common tropes and this is a romance novel so I tried to overlook that and I'm glad I did, because this book went so many places. This whole series was amazing. ...more

Overall, I did not enjoy this book. I had to talk myself into finishing it. A few of the bigger problems I had.
Developments that went nowhere. The weird vamp who showed up and was in a throuple but not really but actually its fine, even though its causing tension? Oh he's a bad guy, no more explanation or questions. Robin is apparently super powerful and obviously is really fond of Seb and helps him out all the time in small ways. But his powers and relationship to the MC never impacted the plot in any substantial way? There was so many things like this that felt almost like the author forgot about it by the end of the 3rd book.
Timeline. Ok so Sebastian is in the weird transfomative coma/spirit walk thing for years. We know this because the child ages. And when he gets back he's like "oh right, my mom and Liam's ex wife are here" WHAT? Wasn't the beginning of the book years ago? Or is this a buffy situation, where willow was retroactively added to the timeline by magic? Either way, it wasn't clear. There were so many throw away comments like "Toby still behaves like this" how would you know when you've been missing for years, that what he is doing today is what he does everyday?
Magical conception. What was the point of telling us that Sebastian was an omega and showing us that Liam can knot, if kitsune conception is just magical runoff? and it happened by accident? It just felt so anticlimactic, like this really important thing, a baby, became an afterthought. We didn't get to see the kid grow up and everyone was just like "yup, daddy was gone and now hes back, it's all good" WTF? Shouldn't Seb have had some kind of emotional reaction to missing his kid grow up? The kid have an adjustment period to this new stranger? Nothing?
Too much internal experience, not enough action/material consequence. This was the biggest issue for me. Huge portions of this book happen in dream sequences, or like, magical hallucinations, or in another world where time passes differently, and that's all good. What is not good, is when there's just internal realizations or transformations piling up on top of each other in a way that barely impacts the plot or the other characters. Seriously, if you took out most of the internal experience stuff and even half the magic stuff, you could have gotten from the beginning to the end no problem. I just felt like I was tracking all these nebulous/abstract emotions and magical transformations and at the end of the day, it was pointless. Similar to how I felt about the timeline.
It's gonna be a while before I give this author another chance. ...more

I like that the tThis isn't your typical alpha/omega and the change of pace was very welcome. Even though they're fated mates, there's no insta love. I like that the traumatized character was pathetic, which a lot of authors aren't able to pull off. I loved the adventure aspect and the hurt comfort aspect.
I have one major beef with this book. Homophobia, for being a homosexual, was a huge aspect of Sebastian's backstory. When he asks Liam if he's even into men, if he's just going to be his dirty little secret, Liam basically emotionally blackmails him? "I don't see gender" and "terms like gay are too new given how old I am". He just wanted an assurance that he wasn't going to face homophobia from this new partner and new pack and instead of understanding this clearly traumatized love interest, Liam was like "don't put me in a box". He could have literally conveyed the same information while being comforting like "I don't see myself as LGBT etc because I came to terms with my sexuality before there was specific terminology, but I have had men as lovers throughout my life" or something like that. (Which also makes no sense because in 1700s Ireland the term sodomite definitely existed, among other euphemisms.) It was just so weird to me, specifically because Liam was so understanding of Sebastian's trauma in every other situation....more

First of all because the villain was a lot more complex than simply an evil slave owner. Next, because the tenderness between the characters was so sweet. I loved the artistic/beauty theme. And lastly because this was the only one where the slave owner just took all of them to a country where they would be freed and he'd support them in setting up their new life, which seems the least the humanitarian characters could do in this universe. ...more

This was so frustrating and painful. I was expecting something more like Adara Wolf where there are clearly evil characters but there's also a twisted happily ever after because they're toxically perfect for each other. Or where there's clearly a bad guy and a victim and it's pretty black and white. Instead this was just endless mindfuckery with no real conclusion in either plot or emotion. If that's what you're looking for, this author has a few series you will love, but to me it was just too much yet not enough....more
