Because it gave a charming sense of place while letting the characters really carry the story. I loved the happy ending our characters got but omg the angst was killing me! All things considered, I was ok with that though, because as a whole, the series was pretty low angst.

My biggest issue is Ryan. So he's an abusive asshole, and while some people have come around to the idea that maybe he wasn't the best for Will, I really wanted the town to realize how cruel he was. When we see Heartly all depressed and taking Ryan's cruelty without any reaction, I was so upset. Will offers to help but then we never see anything again. The fact that Ryan convinced(?) his indigenous bf to cut off his hair is so sad. And he's obviously drunk again. Why isn't the town talking about these two things? I get that the story wasn't really about them, but Will and Patrick, but it makes me anxious to know that Heartly was left alone with that asshole. I hope this is addressed in the next book.

I saw on kindle that 2 books were listed so while I was so into it, especially towards the end, I wasn't sad, because I knew the next book was there. BUT NO. IT WAS NOT THERE.
The completely different backgrounds, motivations, and mentalities of the MCs was so well done. They way they slowly go from enemies to having each other's backs was so slow and organic and didn't require the characters to change themselves to the point of unrecognizability.
The only thing I didn't get was why/how they started having sex. It came out of nowhere?

I have a love/hate relationship with historicals because they're either super happy to the point of being totally historically inaccurate OR they're very historically inaccurate, and therefor super depressing. This book straddled that line in a way that I've never seen before, it was so obvious the author had done a lot of research.
Wish this wasn't a stand alone, but it seems that it is. Can't wait to see what this author publishes next. ...more

This guy cheated on his boyfriend of like 5 years or something and is acting like its a great opportunity instead of recognizing how selfish and cruel he's being. I found the entire tone of the book was way too forgiving towards him just cause he kept bringing up poly. Sit down and have a conversation or break up, don't just cheat, no identity excuses that. ...more

But at the end of the day, the story was meandering, there was no pacing to speak of, and there was absolutely no sense of urgency. In the 3rd act breakup, I didn't really care if they got back together or not. I also felt like there wasn't much of a conclusion for their unique sexual situation. We were just told they had a good sex life in the epilogue?...more
