But at the end of the day, the story was meandering, there was no pacing to speak of, and there was absolutely no sense of urgency. In the 3rd act breakup, I didn't really care if they got back together or not. I also felt like there wasn't much of a conclusion for their unique sexual situation. We were just told they had a good sex life in the epilogue?...more

Hope we get like 1o more books in this series. ...more

So this rich brit traveled to the US and paid, presumably, an exorbitant amount of money for this ranch experience, and the hosts treat him like crap? He being poisoned, beaten, had a drink dumped on him, called homophobic slurs, had his neck lassoed, had an asthma attack triggered, and he's just like "I don't run from a fight" DUDE YOU PAID FOR A VACATION? Why don't the wrangles/Erik care that he's gonna give them a bad review or sue them?
So the semi closeted cowboy is into this visitor, alright. Literally every sexual encounter they had was in public, in a rural area where everyone knows each other. I thought staying closeted was a matter of safety?
I didn't feel or understand the evolution from "guys who are fucking out of convenience" to "omg I need to be with you everyday"? So the whole last segment of the book feels super disconnected from the beginning.
The thing I hated the most about this book was the idea that a 14yo has the agency to "seduce" an adult? And that everything that happened after that was his fault? I could understand if that was how the victim rationalized it after the fact, especially considering all the death, but there was no pushback. Not even the boyfriend internally thinking, that's not how that works when you're a child.
I also didn't understand how the fate of their relationship seemed to hinge on the ability of a rape victim to bottom, and thus show his partner respect??? The actual issue was how to handle their distance because of work and responsibility. And somehow it seemed that conflict culminated in a super forced sex scene?
The ending was great, but also, so similar edge of forever. In some ways, I feel like Edge of Forever was a do-over of this book with way better execution....more

I was a bit disappointed that the coming out was because someone ended up in the hospital, solely because its such a cliche and this author is so inventive. I was also a bit weirded out that Eli warned about going through a depression after his injury and that never really happened. But both of these criticisms are really nit picky, this book was awesome! ...more

I felt that the Morgan's turn from "I don't deserve you" to "let's give it a try" wasn't very comprehensive. The waiting for marriage thing was super cool! But it felt totally out of nowhere when Morgan was like "let's get married!" I loved everything that happened in the cabin. I wish more mm romance books had MCs who were so devoted to their partner's pleasure. I get it that they're private about their relationship in public BUT it's so weird to me that in both Gravity and this book, their gay relationship was a total non issue.

First, Joel Leslie's accent decision was very regrettable. At times it felt like a weak chinese accent or a week latino accent? But turns out hes Russian? I just never got used to it and found it grating.
Second, the romance element just wasn't there. I guess it was supposed to be built up with all the flashbacks, but that just really messed up the momentum of the book. Same thing with emotional investment, Raven was built up as a mystery, but he was actually kind boring? And that didn't translate into any investment in Phin. He was also boring.
Third, same issue I had with Christopher's org, why did it feel like they barely had any ppl, any plans or any resources/allies? Just off the top of my head, why is it up to the little girl to find a hiding spot, why don't they have a panic room? And towards the end, why isn't there a bodyguard designated to carry Phin should there be a need to run? They don't behave like billionaires who've lived under threat for years.
Fourth, the children make no sense. Like why are you running around with babies while you're under threat? Shouldn't you be hiding in a bunker or something? There are random things that Raven and Phin won't discuss in front of Adelaide because "she's too young" but at the same time, they literally discuss how their family is trying to murder her/them in front of her like its no big deal. She's just written so weird. She gets up from playing the piano and is like "Dad, I was playing the piano"???
Lastly, the mystery/conspiracy was incoherent and underwhelming. For example, when Trenton takes out the hit on Menagerie, and Phin is like "we should take it" why are all the super smart assassins like "OMG GREAT IDEA!"??? When they take off in the helicopter, its observed with the naked eye, from the ground, by their side. Surely, the enemy had the building under surveillance and saw it too? Also, the climax, the sit down in Hart manor was SO BORING. As the culmination for a power struggle spanning 7 books, it was really underwhelming.
