Running around in animal pelts, and fighting goblins (or whatever) is just not my thing. Yay for you, if that's what you enjoy. The art could have been cool, but something was just off about it. It was distracting and weird. Almost like someone had spilled water on the pages, so that everything looked annoyingly blurry. Oh, and in one pannel, Thor had a boob. Yeah. Just one. How do you not notice that when you're drawing it?! Ugh.

The plot is less than coherent, the characters are shells of their previous selves, and the Wanda/Pietro thing is just plain icky. I really can't think of anything in the book redeeming enough to make it worth reading.
My advice would be to stay away from this thing, and just pretend that The Ultimates 2 was the end of it....more

Well, Harley and Ivy is the comic book form of that movie genre. Lots of gratuitous shower scenes (yes, some in prison), and several girl fights (*sigh*yes, in panties). I'd like to work up some righteous indignation at the chauvinistic portrayal of women, but I can't seem to get in touch with my inner feminazi today. Huh. Oh well. The plot? Yeeeah...not so much. Well, I was too busy laughing at all of the crotch shots to notice much of a real story line. But from what I could tell, the (God, I'm being so generous today) plot was something along the lines of...

I'm happy to say, however, that he has totally redeemed himself (in my eyes, anyway) with Heart of Hush.
Hush, while not as awesome as Joker, is a pretty interesting villain. Heart of Hush explores more of Thomas Elliot's background, and also his warped reasoning for targeting Bruce Wayne.
I'm sure you can see from the front cover that Catwoman is also a prominent figure in this story. And really, is there ever such a thing as too much Selina Kyle? No. No, there is not.
I'm afraid I'll give out spoilers if I keep going, so I'll just end this review with a big Two Thumbs Up!...more

It still has the warmth of the first volume, but the plot really seems to get rolling in this one. You get the answer to Jamie's missing year, which was what I was hoping. Turns out the answer is kinda anti-climactic, but the story leading up to it is good. Peacemaker is an interesting character, and his interactions with Jamie add something that the first volume was missing. They've got that I-Don't-Wanna-Like-You-But-I-Kinda-Do-Anyway thing going on between them. It has potential. The origin story of the new Blue Beetle is a tad shaky, and could have used a more in-depth approach. Especially when it came to his missing year...but maybe that will be addressed in later volumes? Also, the bad guys aren't very scary, and there's some pretty stereotypical characters thrown in as Jamie's friends and family.
And yet...
I really liked it. Something about the interactions between Jamie, his family, and his friends really warmed me up to this book. I don't know if I'm explaining it right, but the conversations between the characters seemed more realistic than the characters themselves.

I read volume 2 first, and even though it is good enough to read as a stand alone, there were a few lingering questions I had, especially about Hush/Thomas Elliot's part in it. Abuse makes his first appearance in this volume, though he doesn't really play much of a part in the story until you get to Leviathan. If you're a fan of Catwoman, you'll like the role she plays in this, also. I enjoyed seeing her so much that I now find myself wanting to bump Batman: The Heart of Hush to the top of my to-read list.

This isn't a good example of Johns at his best. The story about Iron Man and Thor is sort of passable, but it the cheese level got pretty high at times. Captain America kind of got thrown in there at the end as the voice of reason, but his being there just felt weird and forced. The first story involves Huntress, Man-Bat, and a priest. Huntress, Man-Bat, and a priest walk into a bar... It's a solid story, but there's a little twist at the end that sort of takes it up a notch or two and pushes it into the Really Good category.
The second half of the book is where we get introduced to a new character, Abuse. Loved him. The plot follows Damien and Abuse as they separately try to figure out what's happening to Gotham's runaways. It's a dark story, but it ends on a high note. But a few days later, when I heard him telling his brother about how Dr. Strange and the Silver Surfer helped Adam Warlock save the universe, I decided that I should probably make sure this was suitable reading material for children. Um, you know, just to be a responsible parent...and all that.
Considering the fact that there are actually people who ask me for advice because I'm old and therefore wise, I should know better than to judge a book by its ancient cover. But I'm shallow. And I was shocked when I realized that this was good. Surprisingly good. It opened with Dr. Strange, so how could it not be? Don't answer that. So, yes. This is one of those stories that stand the test of time. It's not required reading, but it is fun.

Do you have to get past the overblown grandiose dialogue that was par for the course when this was written? Yes. Personally, when I read something like this, the little narrator in my head sounds like William Shatner. I've found it makes the reading experience a bit more fun.
Is the art slick eye-candy? No. It still looks...old. It's the kind of old that grows on you, though. Kinda like that crazy uncle who won't stop chain-smoking and talking about his Days in 'Nam...even though everyone in the family knows he actually spent that time in Canada. Just roll with it.
Anyway, check this out when you get in the mood for wacky/fun space opera set in the Marvel universe!

I asked my librarian to help me find a book that was good, but not sad, violent, or about animals (What? I don't like sappy books about animals.) I wanted something mind-numbing to pass the time. Something kind of funny maybe? She gave me this book and told me, "My mother really loved it!". I really tried to smile at her when she said that. There's a possibility it looked more like a grimace. But I took it anyway, because it's just been one of those weeks. Well, I guess I need to send a Thank-You note to her mother, because it was exactly what I was looking for.
The plot is...hard to explain, and the mystery isn't really all that engaging. It's basically just a story about a nutty family of Private Investigators, and all of the good-natured damage that they do to each other. It may not sound like much, but I really enjoyed reading it. Definitely going to check out the rest of the books in this series!

Well, maybe not softer. It is Batman, after all. But. It appears that being presumed dead and getting lost in time has had an effect on the Dark Knight. Could it be that Bruce Wayne is actually sentimental? It would seem so. Of course, since he is The Batman, sentimental takes on a whole new form. Instead of simply announcing his return to his rather extended Bat-family (and rolling out some chips and dip), he takes on a new persona (The Insider) and proceeds to check up on his loved ones. That's right. You heard me. His loved ones. Ok, maybe the word love is more of an implied thing...but you get my drift. Dick, Tim, Damien, Barbara, Jim Gordon, and even Stephanie Brown are members of his family. And as such, Bruce feels they are his responsibility. While most of us would hug and cry, he shows his affection by spying on them and devising tests to see how well they can perform without him. Like I said, the word love is an implied thing.

I enjoyed reading The Road Home. Nicieza does a good job of keeping this thing from becoming a mushy love-fest, and instead just shows a few chinks in Wayne's emotional armor.
I think I would have rated it even higher, but the Vicki Vale storyline (especially the conclusion to it) was just goofy. Unfortunately, that was also the conclusion to the book. It was probably the only time in the story that I felt Nicieza went too far and ended up with Emo-Batman. Just my opinion. The rest of the book was great, though.
