I'm confused about how I feel about these books. The writing is good, the world building interesting enough, but it's so slow. It's not uninteresting I'm confused about how I feel about these books. The writing is good, the world building interesting enough, but it's so slow. It's not uninteresting or dragging necessarily, but the romance is lacking and I want to get to know my H and h better. They don't interact all that much. There are so many places where the author could've facilitated some tension, clandestine/accidental meetings between them, I don't know...but something and it's just stuff happening to Merit and Ethan totally separate doing who knows what for a lot of the book. The reason I keep reading is that there's so much mystery surrounding Merit and I want to get to the bottom of it. Not to mention I'd like a bit more than one kiss between the main love interests at this point. There's a reason I pretty much exclusively read romance and it's cause I need some goddamn romance in my books and I'm finding these lacking, as I've already said. But back to Merit, WTF happened when she was changed?? Who exactly tried to kill her?? I've got a theory that it's: (view spoiler)[FUCKING MORGAN... because why the fuck does she have the mental pathway with him when you're only supposed to have it with your maker? Oh, I don't know, maybe because Morgan is KIND OF HER MAKER cause he fucking almost killed her so maybe some of his vampire juju affected her when she was ultimately changed by Ethan minutes later? It explains to me why he was so freaked out when he found out who she was at the club in book 1 cause he was like oh fuck I almost killed you for my maker/master and now I want to fuck you and that's confusing for me and also fuck. I think he's still team Celina but could've been swayed or something if they'd kept dating. I don't know. Just my theory for now. (hide spoiler)] I don't know if that's a real spoiler obviously it's just my mental ramblings, but it makes sense to me. Next up, WHY were Ethan and Malik conveniently there to save her life? Celina planted some seeds of doubt, Merit admitted we don't have the full story from Ethan about why he drugged her through the transition. He had his sights on her before she was turned, I think that's pretty safe to say. Why were people going around killing girls that look like Merit? What's up with Merit's powers, weird double transition, separate vampire entity yadda yadda yadda. Also, why is the Shifter alpha referring to her as family? SO MANY QUESTIONS. I looked ahead a little and it appears this 13 book series follows Merit the whole time? It was hard to check without spoiling myself too much, but I'm scared nothing is going to progress in her's and Ethan's relationship for a very long time if that's the case cause they wouldn't want them to get together too soon and also none of my questions will have answers for forever. So I don't know... do I keep reading? Probably. I'm too curious right now. Sorry for this long rambly 'review' I just needed to get this written out....more

I kind of forgot how evil Arwan was before re-reading this series, this isn't a dark romanceOriginal read: 2018 First re-read: 2020 Second re-read: 2023
I kind of forgot how evil Arwan was before re-reading this series, this isn't a dark romance so he's not evil evil, but he's pretty bad. Like I love him, but he's definitely not a nice guy. He's obsessed with power, self-serving and ultimately cares very little for humanity. Does he still have a conscience? Yeah. Would a nice guy trap a woman into a deal that forces her to immediately give over her sister who's just been through one of the most traumatic experiences a human can endure to a man dubbed "the demon lord" all in the name of him acquiring more power? Definitely no. Did he make some concessions because he's patient (born from millennia of existence) and not the absolute worst? Yes. Did he ultimately trick Maeve into his service and severing the link to her family when she didn't have to come to him quite yet? Also yes. God that one hurt. *spoilers from book 3* I was so excited when Maeve started to gain some control over her life again and wanted to move back in with Merle and Rhun. She made so much progress and I really wanted her to get to bond with Rhun and be back home with her sister for a little while before going to Arwan ...more
So I also skipped this book in my 2020 re-read of this series because I was too desperate to read Arwan and MaeveOriginal read: 2018 First reread: 2023
So I also skipped this book in my 2020 re-read of this series because I was too desperate to read Arwan and Maeve's book (book 4), but this book is definitely a necessary re-read to prepare for the newly released book 5, Hazel and Tallak's book, because this is when they first meet and lays the foundation for their relationship. Also I forgot how much groundwork was laid for Maeve and Arwan in this book because we get POVs from Merle and Rhun on a totally different storyline which involves Maeve so I loved that even though switching storylines like that isn't my favorite.
This book was better than I remembered and I don't think I would've skipped it 3 years ago if I remembered how much I liked it, I stand by my 4 stars especially since I read this in a day which is rare for me these days, felt nice...more
