I absolutely loved this book! It's hot, funny, kinky, with a hint of angst. It's about one stuffy, billionaire by day named Max / and his alter ego Torment, a hot as sin, tattooed MMA fighter by night. And though he wasn't looking, Makayla / Mac struts into his life, and she just bowls him over with her beauty, curves, empathy and her sweet, smart mouth.
Makayla's compassion does not extend to herself. It's hard for her to give herself a break or to ask for what she needs. And let's not even talk about trust. But Max is a complete enigma and the only thing the reader knows for sure is that he’s fallen hard for her whether he admits it to himself or not. So, despite the fact that they can't keep away from each other, neither of them are ready to open up about their past pain and they can't truly form a bond until they take that risk.
This is one of the sexiest and most hilarious books I've read in awhile. Makayla has shot up to the top of my most favorite heroines! And our Hero, Max seriously cracks me up. He's intense but just the squishiest Doms. His controlling ways extend to every aspect of Mad's life, but he is putty in her hands. It's great to see how they begin to heal each other unawares. They're perfect for each other. Top it off with a gym full of MMA fighters for Makayla to counsel; her bestie Amanda who carries a torch for MMA fighter Jake; Big Doris, Mac's envious, over zealous, chit-writing hospital supervisor; and randy Dr. Drake who is a complete man whore, but with a golden heart. And I'm not even mentioning Sergio, Makaylah's wacky, student loan debt collector.
I did not want this to end. As a matter of fact, I’d happily subscribe to a serial for occasional peeks into everyone’s lives. Next up is, “In Your Corner,” Jake and Amanda's story, and I sure hope it gives us an update about Max and Makayla....more
Gosh, darnit, this is why I don't like series books. I just finished and can't stand that I'm not able to just keep reading. And by the time the next Gosh, darnit, this is why I don't like series books. I just finished and can't stand that I'm not able to just keep reading. And by the time the next book is out, I probably won't remember it, not with this keen excitement.
That said, I loved this book. I loved the heroine's strength, wit, and spunk. I loved the Hero, too. Fuck, but Lawton was HOT and kind--a combination you don't find very often. Especially, if you toss in filthy rich. Also, Chloe's backstory was pitiable without being too traumatizing. She still had her brother, Josh, and her grandmother to love. And the thing she did month after month for her grandmother was both hysterical and OMG CRAZY. Chloe was just such a cool character. I'd love to have her as a friend. My biggest issue with her is that she just didn't speak up. I wanted her to just spit it out! And it's not like Lawton didn't have his own secrets!
Some thoughts:
--What was up with Lawton dressed head to toe in black that one night? Was he going to spy on her? Or something more nefarious? --Where did he go when he ditched her at the club? --I'd love to have some of Lawton's POV? He's a great character. --I disliked Bishop, at first, but I kinda grew to like him by the end. Maybe Bishop can hook up with Erika, lol? --I sort of think there should have been some check-ins with the Parkers? --I wished there had been one more steamy scene between the MCs first time sleeping together and "two weeks later". Just me being naughty & selfish. --it could use another round of editing. There are few enough errors that the ones I noticed stood out as sloppy.

3.75 stars Pretty good! It's short and sweet. And fairly clean. There are just a couple of day dreams and one love scene. But, I really liked that abo3.75 stars Pretty good! It's short and sweet. And fairly clean. There are just a couple of day dreams and one love scene. But, I really liked that about this book, its not inst-love, insta-fuck, rather it's about two people with deep issues taking it slow because they're in it for the long haul. That may bother some, but I really enjoyed both MCs and reading about how their relationship grew into a cheer worthy HEA....more
A rare 5* rating from me and more so because this story clocks in at just over 100 pages, But what a perfect story it is. Two individuals desperately A rare 5* rating from me and more so because this story clocks in at just over 100 pages, But what a perfect story it is. Two individuals desperately NOT looking for love are terrified when it comes looking for them. This couple goes from a standing only table at a sandwich shop to bravely, or not so much, taking a chance at love. Each with rough edges that need s(m)oothing. Well, I'm rooting for them and I'm strangely suspicious that they're going to make it.
I realize I didn't mention the sex, and there was a lot of it--but mostly it was hot, tender falling-in-love-story....more
