A mysterious school and murders and isolation and mental illness. Somehow this is marketed as dark academia but like what? This is just a weird teacher student relationship with other plot points that make zero sense. It’s not horror, it’s not scary, it’s even suspenseful. The main characters are beyond flat and lifeless.

And also why are people still writing urban fantasy where there are literally no other female main characters? I understand this is an older series, but how can a woman writing this think, ‘this story needs more men.’ And don’t even get me started on her half ass attempt to explain away why there’s only white vampires. Honestly a lot of this just feels lazy. I kinda liked this series when it was about Anita being a vampire executioner and necromancer, now it’s just about who she’s gonna bone next. ...more

I mean the whole book was just a series of events, but there was no overarching struggle or plot. That was one the things I liked about the first book. This was just events happening. And for the love of god, the whole Mary and Rage thing could have been omitted. Or at least abbreviated. It drug on so much. Ugh. I sorta wish I heard more about the other trainees, but I might grow to dislike them later too. Also, Peyton being in Auburn fan. Ward, why do you have to do me like that? And honestly I only just got around to it because it was on hold for almost a year from the library. It was definitely not worth it.
There is almost no plot here, just the fact that she has to pick a fiance at the end. The first two thirds of the book are endless drivel about her 'running the country' and her weird 'dates', but there's no substance to anything. The only characters who have any dimension (Bryce, Aaron, Merritt) are all orbiting figures that seem to only exist when Eadlyn bothers to think of anyone else. And don't get me started on the fake drama Merritt tried to create. What was that? How did that just randomly happen and then go away as quickly?

I don't have a lot of additions to this review, the book is kind of slow, especially now that I've read Throne of Glass and Crescent City. But I also understand that too much information and setting is off putting.
I don't like Feyre anymore than I did before but I don't dislike her either. But one thing I do like about this book is the effort to give her a backstory and build her character. This is sort of the opposite of what Maas did with Celana (I can't spell audiobook names, sue me) and Bryce, where you get giant character revelations later in the story. It's the good and bad parts about first person point of view vs third person.
I don't really feel like there's been enough information about Tamlin or Lucian or Rhys to make a decision there. It just always unnerves me in these books when they talk about the men being hundreds of years old and lusting after a human girl who's a fraction of their age. I get that their not humans, its just always felt a little off putting to me.
Onto the next one.
May 2015 initial review I feel like 2 stars is really generous. This book is not a bad book, but it's a little cliché. The main character Feyre is the cliche poor starving girl who is somehow the only girl who can provide for her family in a community hurting for money. She gets taken away by a mystery supernatural being (Tamlin) who is a fey. He takes her back to his fey home and she's all pissy about the whole thing, looking for ways to escape. Meanwhile he's growing smitten with her, despite her being kind of a bitch.
All and all, there was stuff that just felt like it didn't make sense. I didn't feel the chemistry between her and Tamlin, I was glad that Lucian was around to at least be funny and entertaining. And the end was kinda predictable. And it really didn't leave me wanting more. In fact it ended, and I'm a little confused about how or why this is a series.
Eh, I might read the next one. But we'll see....more

But there is almost nothing likable about it. The setting and the story are interesting, but we've heard them before. A group of silvers assert their power over reds (a al Red Rising), a monarch using violence to show his power over a group of people unwilling to fight back while one girl is made the 'symbol of the rebellion' (a al The Hunger Games).
There was sooooo much potential here but it was wasted on lame things. The main character is Mare, who isn't a bad main character, I mean she's selfish and unreliable and totally rude to people she claims to love, but she can kick some ass. My problem is how she's portrayed as the only worthwhile female character, half the book is about her struggles with the other mean girls in the castle because of course every female character that isn't her quiet demure sister is out to get her.
And if we can touch for a moment on the men in this story. This story is a total sausage fest and this is hinging on the fact that Mare has not one, not two, but three potential love interests. Killorn is the first set up as so, the childhood friend, that she's always trying to protect (from what I'm not sure, he's more than capable of protecting himself). She confesses to fantasizing about a future with him and 'green eye children.' Enter Cal, the hidden prince who manages to save her life and catapults her into this weird situation. Cal is terrible, he's rude, condescending, but somehow just a lost boy that also needs saving. Then there's Cal's little brother Mavin who becomes Mare's fiance. She doesn't like him, because obviously he's not his brother, but there's something special about him. He's so precious and naive, he must be protected to.
Give me a break, the whole story is about how Mare needs to protect everyone, her family, her brothers at war, her sister (who's life she ruined), the rebellion, all the boys, etc.
I would like to say that 'the twist' was interesting, but I think it honestly ruined the book for me. I didn't feel like it worked, I have a real problem with setting up a character in one way only to do a complete 180 just for the sake of shock value. (view spoiler)[Plus, Mavin's betrayal was an obvious way to set up Cal as the good guy despite how much of a dick he'd been in the rest of the story. (hide spoiler)]
I'm not saying I want likable characters, those are boring after a while. I just want consistent characters. I feel like Aveyard didn't know her characters well enough and forced them into situations that didn't fit with what she'd portrayed. There was too much set up for a plot twist that when it came, it didn't feel right. Idk, I'm just very conflicted. And I still wished I liked it better than I did. Oh well. ...more

It's not that the book was saddening or that I had any particular emotional attachment to it. I feel sad for the author because the CW took her original idea and did it way better. There is nothing redeeming about this book, the characters a hollow versions of what the CW has developed over two seasons, the plot is boring and predictable, and the relationships are so lame that I don't even want Clark and Bellamy together on the show now. Most people would argue that the book is always better than the movie/show. This is definitely not one of the cases, because if I didn't know better, I would think that this read as a Happy Ending Alternate Universe fan fiction of the show. idk, I feel like the 2 star rating is really appropriate. It was ok. It wasn't bad, but also kinda not that gremy response at the end of this book o_O
idk, I feel like the 2 star rating is really appropriate. It was ok. It wasn't bad, but also kinda not that great. This book was kinda to the point that I felt like I needed to finish it to get some closure, but I didn't. Lets be honest, Noah is pretty much a tool and thinks that everyone who isn't British like him should basically bow in his presence. I like a cocky character, but you shouldn't have to state your cockiness. I didn't really find anything endearing about him. Mara is kinda one dimensional, she pretends to be all independent and a strong person, but she spends so much of the book thinking about how Noah's face look and describing how great he is (even after she just met him and he was a total toolbag). I don't wanna say it here, but Bella? And then the book took a right turn into a sort of unexplainable supernatural element with people dying and healing and I was just left thinking, what? Idk, I thought the book was more fun when it was a look at how people deal with tragedy and issues, not how some girl kills people because her old boyfriend was mean to her. Sorry, but Jude being mean to her doesn't justify all the rest of the death. I was certain that somehow it was going to turn out she was some sort of reaper, which would have been cool. But no. Oh well. ...more

I know I'm not the only one thats saying it, but there's a reason people hated Clockwork Princess and it's going to be the same reason people don't like the ending of this book. We want some resolution, a firm decision one way or another, whether it leaves us happy or sad. It's the decision that matters. And it's the fact that Alyssa can't seem to make that decision that really bothers me. I have a hard time believing in her ability to be a ruler and therefore decision maker. And yeah, I get it, she's got two parts....

There were several times I almost put this book down. For a story that's as lacking in complexity as it, it really should have been much shorter. In many cases, the story drug on and on with Ethan and his weird attachment to Lena. I say it's weird, because well it is weird. His obsession with her made me feel uncomfortable sometimes, but thus is the insta-love of YA books.
A lot of things bothered me about this book. The setting was overall a terrible portrayal of the South. I'm not saying it's not accurate, but as someone born and raised in the south, I can tell you for a fact we do not 'all participate in Civil War reenactments', we're not all bitter about the Civil War still, we have more than one store in our town, we have theaters that play current movies, and for god's sake, FOOTBALL is the sport of choice, not basketball. I digress.
I can't sit here and rant because I didn't hate everything about this book. The ending of this book redeemed everything. Despite the fact that it was slightly predictable, I loved it. I cried and I didn't expect that at all!
I'll continue on with the series and we shall see where it goes from there. Only upward I hope. Maybe that's hoping for too much? If they keep killing off side characters I like, this relationship isn't going to last long. ...more

These same traits could apply to either Twilight or Obsidian, just change the vampire to alien. I really wanted to like this book, but there's nothing likeable about it. Deamon is an ass, Katy is just flaky and not too smart, the only likeable character I thought was Dee and she gets sidelined while 'the men do the work.'

I feel bad that I didn't like it more. I think I continually go into Cassandra's books with my expectations set so high that nothing could possibly work. I set myself up for this, but it was my own trust and other rave reviews that clouded my judgement.
I have two main complaints with this book, each of with garnered the removal of a star from my rating.
1. This book was far too long. Once the battle with Mortmain was over and I realized there were still 3 hours left, I couldn't help but to feel something else dramatic was going to happen. But no, nothing happened. It was merely another 2 and half hours of character development that wasn't really necessary (which leads into my second point). The last half hour of the epilogue was the only part I felt like I actually cared about.
2. Predictable. This book ended the exact way everyone knew it would and how all the fans had predicted. And that's part of what made the end drag out. Everyone had predicted what would happen, so then having to live through it felt like pulling teeth. There was no surprise, no shock, nothing. It was a let down and I feel like Clare might have been just too hung up on what the fans wanted to happen. It's ok to kill of a character, it's ok for things NOT to work out. I can't help but to feel like we didn't get the ending that was best for the story, we just got the one that she knew people wanted.
Lots of people are going to love this book, lots of people already do. I loved parts of this book and I do love many of the characters. I wouldn't have cried so much during the epilogue if I didn't. I just expected more than a shining bow on a neatly wrapped up conclusion. ...more
