Other than that, this is a very long treatise on freedom, sexual longing, and uselessness of psychoanalysis, that I had hard time reading as a novel....more

I often wonder where these expectations even come from. I guess I had a notion this was going to be chick lit (no offense, this is simply not what I usually enjoy).
Gilbert writes vividly - more than one person told me they wanted to pack and go to Italy after her descriptions of food. I also appreciated her self-deprecating humor and honesty. As any memoir, this is a fictionalized account of events, and she has the courage to show herself even in the worst moments. I'm sure this is much more difficult to do than if you are dealing with an actual fictional character.
Italy seems to be the favorite part for many of my friends who read the book. However, I liked the India and Indonesia parts as well. In a way, it is easier to talk about a delicious pasta dish than about an equally 'delicious' experience of meditation but she does well with both. There were some minor things I found irksome in the narrative but this didn't prevent me from enjoying the book.
Highly recommended as a light and cheerful read that is not empty....more
