Absolutely the best book I've read this year, possibly this decade. I want to start right away on Iron Flame, but my heart needs some time to recover....more

As much as I thought I knew about dinosaurs, I now know just how little I knew. We've only known about their existence for less than 200 years, but so much has already been discovered. It was disappointing to find out that there are certain animals whose bones are fragile and they do not hold up well enough to make good fossils, so now my brain is full of all the ideas of other dinosaurs we'll probably never know about.
This book only covers maybe 40 dinosaurs of the unimaginable number of animals that lived in the Mesozoic era, which spanned almost 200 million years. But what it does cover is fascinating, and I'm sure any elementary school child will agree....more

I haven’t seen psychedelic illustrations like those in Meeselphe since the days of Zippy the Pinhead and Yellow Submarine. It was bizarre and fun and creative, just so very French.
Every page has something curious and exciting to discover: Are those rabbits growing in the field, alongside carrots as tall as buildings? Why yes! Is His Pointlessness a hand-shaped bird? Sure! There are so many weird and wonderful things to identify.
Will this trippy and fluid book speak to a small child, in the way that Where the Wild Things Are or an intentionally odd Dr. Seuss book might have 60 years ago? There's only one way to find out, and I don't think we should underestimate the imaginations of our children. ...more

Not just meh, I'm not enjoying this Firefly-styled novel as much as I'd hoped, but kind of cringe. I think a lot, but not all, of it comes from the fact that I have the audiobook version. The narrator is terrible, confidently pronouncing his lines like he's trying to reach the back of the theatre, and making women sound like lisping cartoon characters. I actually giggled at one point where a male character thinks about how much he enjoys listening to one female character's voice, because to us she sounded more like Daisy Duck than Angelina Jolie.
This is a short novel, only 4ish hours and the story builds but does not resolve. It's more like the first episode in an ongoing space series, one which I will not continue.
Thanks NetGalley for the book. I really wanted to like it, but honestly the audiobook needs some serious work....more

The focus here is an enchanted forest, so there's no substantive introduction given for any of the characters. For that reason, buckle up before you crack this one open, and expect a thrill ride from the beginning all the way to the last page.
I only gave The Haunted Forest Tour three stars because it's pretty basic, and doesn't explain much, but I did enjoy it. It's action and gore, and then more action and amped up gore. If an R-rated spooky Scooby Doo episode is what you're looking for, this will absolutely satisfy....more

Unfortunately, furry little Lorry is "cute" and he hates being cute. When he tries to be scary, people laugh. He's humiliated and disappointed.
Until one day he discovers that other monsters find "cute" and huggable to be repulsive. Frightening. Run away screaming terrifying.
And he realizes scaring other monsters is way more satisfying than trying to scare people. In fact, he can use this knowledge to teach people how to scare away monsters too.
An adorable little book to show children that everyone and everything can find its purpose, and even find pride in realizing your true self....more
