Sometimes when you have read a lot of Zombie books and think you have seen or read it all a short novella like Red by Calvin Demmer comes in to your life with a different twist. I had fun with this one. The only negative thing I can say is that I would have loved to see Demmer go for a longer version of this. I think there was more her to explore. Maybe go for two time lines before and after Red. The writing was good and it had the vibe of a black mirror show. If you are a fan of Zombies I recommend giving this one a try :)
I kept thinking; What if I turned into a zombie? Would I really lose my decorum and only think about flesh and my hunger? What about my memories? What would happen to them? If I see a familiar face, would I only know them as my prey? As a target?
This took me 20 minutes to read but had me thinking about a lot of things the whole night. Deep and emotional.
No spoilers. 5 stars. Well, this was one of the shortest but most fascinating zombie stories I've ever read...
The story opens with a zombie looking for clean meat in the aftermath of a plague. When he finds it, he sees...
Red...
As he shambles along discerning the clean from the unclean meat sources, he knows when he's found something good to eat because he sees...
Red...
At one point, he desperately tries to vocalize: I am Andrew. He is only able to produce grunts while he sees...
Red...
This was such a short story that I don't want to say anything else about it but if you're tired of the onslaught of zombie stories as I am, I think you might find this one different. I sure did!
An original and engrossing take on zombie horror. This story is not your typical zombie apocalypse scenario. It explores the psychological and emotional impact of living in a world where the undead are constantly hunting you. The protagonist is a young woman who has survived for months by hiding in an abandoned house. She has lost everyone she loved and has no hope for the future. One day, she finds a radio and hears a voice that claims to be from a safe haven. She decides to risk everything and follow the signal! For such a short story, this packs a punch.
Demmer is another author who writes excellent short horror stories. I felt like I was watching an episode of the Twilight Zone when I read it. Red is a story told through the eyes of a zombie and it’s really interesting, in a creepy sort of way. I love Demmer’s kind of creepiness!! If you like short horror stories, you need to check out Demmer’s work! Start with this one, I highly recommend it!!!
I just loved this short story. It’s my first read from this author but it won’t be my last! A horror story that shows the power of love and the endurance of memories. A lot of story and emotion in a few short pages!!
Left foot. Right foot. Left foot. Right foot. Oh boy- shoot me if I turn zombie, don’t let me drown, dont burn me, don’t chop me into pieces. I don’t like pain. After reading this, when the apocalypse comes, I will have no problems just shooting a zombie’s head into a pile of mush. This story, albeit short, hit so many emotions and milestones in such a small space. It gives you a viewpoint aside from them just being brain eating living dead. Because, are you really dead if you’re still thinking? Left foot, right foot. Left foot, right.
I enjoyed the point of view of this story, one that we don't normally get. By the end I felt bad for the MC even though I had only known him for a few short pages.
This was a fantastic zombie novella with some unexpected twists that made it fun to read. This zombie still seemed to have some left over memories and feelings that flashed back. It is short and sweet and I loved it!
This was really good. A very interesting concept I just wished it would have been longer then just 14 pages. I think it would have made for a really good book.
Mr. Demmer does it again. In this short we follow a man as he wanders through a neighborhood. He comes upon a house, something about this house. He sees a woman running into another house, something about this woman. The reader is seeing through the eyes of a zombie! He is driven by a hunger and something he refers to as the red. Demmer is a master of the short story!
Ughhh I know this was supposed to be a short story…… but it was too short for meeeee 😩 I wanted to know more, too see how his wife and daughter ended up with the neighbor. maybe he could have fought off the red. I give 3.5 stars.
This short story told through the eyes of a zombie, trying to regain control of his own humanity while grappling with the hunger of “the red.” This had a cool little twist and I’d definitely recommend it if you have 10 minutes to spare. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer- this would’ve been a dope concept for a full bodied novel- I want more!
When a zombie staggers into his old home then confronts his family? You see the struggle of the undead against memories that once meant everything. Good story! Recommended!
I loved this quick and suspenseful story. It was great to see a unique deviation from typical zombie storytelling in that this story is from the monster's perspective - not something you often see with these "mindless" walking corpses. Everything in the beginning was vague, but you very quickly get what's going on simply because of how the author describes their movements. We've all seen zombie movies - we know how they move. This description alone lets you understand whose head you're inside, and I loved the rare opportunity to have this much sympathy for a zombie. The more you learn about the "red," the more you want our meat-eating friend to fight, but cruel fate seems to have a hand here too.
This book came recommended by a long time GR friend of mine, and ended up being a zombie story that ripped my own heart out at the end. I was thinking, “I wish this was part of an anthology” because the author, Calvin Demmer, did a great job with capturing raw emotion in under 15 pages.
