This gorgeously illustrated and heartwarming book begins with a friendly "hello" and "konnichiwa", and becomes a fun-filled day of two girls sharing their words and culture as they play.
The book is easy to follow, for those young and old, and the story unfolds so effortlessly. If you're looking for a gift, this one should definitely go into the pile.
Remember when, before all the #metoo and Harvey Weinstein uproar, we used to think working in the entertainment industry was so glamorous? Everyone dreamed of "making it" in Hollywood. Ladies and gents, I am here to tell you WE ALL DODGED A BIG, FAT BULLET.
I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say you're probably about to find out that at least one of your favorite TV shows was (or is) a steaming pile of abuse and racial/ethnic/gender disparities, all at the hands of power hungry "creative geniuses". Prepare to get pissed off....more

I can't say enough about All the Families in My Town. It's the hippie children's book about inclusion I wish I'd had 25 years ago for my children, or 50 years ago for myself. But it's so current and fresh, maybe it simply couldn't exist until now.
Our narrator takes us on the tour of her small hometown, where no one is "normal". That must make special the norm! Through her child's eyes, we meet some very unique people, who she accepts at face value. Why wouldn't she? If there are differences, she embraces them. She cannot understand why people might mock or criticize people for listening to their hearts. She knows it's important for everyone to feel "free to be themselves."
The illustrations by Ariane Caldin have a definite retro look to them, like something whimsical I can recall from the 1970s. The sunny oranges, the deep blues, all the richness is so comforting and warm. I can't say enough about these watercolors, except that I adore them....more
Junk Science and the American Criminal Justice System is not a deep dive into how poor science and confirmation bias are used to wrongly convict, nor does it offer a plan to rise above. Instead it's a disjointed review of example cases where this “junk science” has been used by experts, their testimonies resulting in wrongful convictions and even executions. The author works for The Innocence Project, so I get that he has an axe to grind, but I was hoping for more answers and fewer "this crappy thing happened because bias" summaries.
M. Chris Fabricant can turn a phrase, though, as evidenced in an observation of a test regarding confirmation bias: "The fingerprints had not changed, only their minds."
I worked in genetics research for 13 years, so obviously I'm a strong advocate for forensic DNA evidence being treated as the only reliable and indisputable tool we currently have in our toolbox, both to convict and to overturn prior (erroneous) convictions. The author, M. Chris Fabricant, agrees with me on this point, but I'm not sure what we're supposed to do with this information.
Overall it's not a bad book, and it definitely raises awareness of issues with the use of expert testimony. Could Junk Science and the American Criminal Justice System use an editor? Sure, but if you love forensics in general, you probably also love puzzles and this poorly organized book is a doozy....more

I definitely want my book club to read this gem of feminist social commentary and magical realism. Fueled by a little wine, it should be hilarious discussing the atrocities presented and the vastly different reactions from both the penis-having and penis-not-having characters.
