What to consider when buying a smart scale

When buying a smart scale, consider a few different factors to find one that meets your needs, current goals and overall preferences, including:

Metrics measured

All smart scales measure weight, but many also track other metrics. Body fat percentage helps assess your body’s composition. The body mass index (BMI) provides an indication of your overall health. Muscle mass tracks your muscle gain and bone density helps monitor your bone health.

Accuracy and precision

“Look for scales with good reviews on measurement consistency,” says certified personal trainer James McMahon. “Too much fluctuation in the numbers can lead to skewed trends and hinder your goals.” Additionally, look for scales that have advanced sensors and algorithms to provide more accurate readings.

Compatibility

Ensure the scale is compatible with your smartphone and any fitness apps you use, such as Apple Health, Google Fit or Fitbit. You’ll want to track your runs on the treadmill or exercise bike sessions.

User profiles

Do you have more than one person living in the house? Look for scales that can handle multiple user profiles. Also consider how the scale handles, stores and secures user data.

Ease of use

Choose a scale with a straightforward setup process. It should be as simple as pulling it out of the box and connecting it to Wi-Fi. A clear, easy-to-read display is essential for quick checks. Lastly, an intuitive app interface will make tracking and understanding your data effortless.

Battery life

Some (if not most) scales use replaceable batteries. However, some smart scales have rechargeable ones. If you want a rechargeable scale, research the battery life between charges to help reduce the number of times you need to replace or recharge it.

How we selected the best smart scales

With over a decade in product journalism as a writer and editor, I have tested, researched and written about thousands of products. When selecting the best smart scales, I considered several factors. Preference was given to scales that measure multiple body metrics, such as BMI, body fat, muscle mass and bone mass. Scales with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities that sync with multiple health apps were also prioritized. Customer reviews also played a significant role in my selection process as they provide real-life insights and opinions a product description cannot offer. I reached out to a certified personal trainer to help answer important questions regarding smart scales. Lastly, I drew from my own personal experience using my smart scale, which allowed me to offer recommendations based on integration, accuracy and value.

How do smart scales measure body composition?

Smart scales measure body composition by using a method called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). This works by sending a very low (and safe!) electrical current through your body. It’s almost always imperceptible and travels up one leg and down the other.

“The speed at which the signal travels can help determine leanness, and algorithms in the smart scale software can use this information to calculate body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone density and other health factors to a degree of accuracy,” McMahon says.

The scale will measure the resistance that it encounters as the current travels through your body. Different tissues, like bone, fat and muscle, have different resistance levels. For example, fat tissue will present more resistance to the current compared to muscle, which conducts electricity better. After that, the scale will interpret this data, along with other information you provided, such as your height, age and gender, and estimate different body composition metrics like body fat, muscle mass, bone mass and possibly hydration levels.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Are smart scales accurate for health tracking?

Smart scales are useful tools for gaining insight into your health, but their accuracy can vary depending on various circumstances. For example, your body composition can change based on your hydration levels, what you ate, skin temperature or even your most recent physical activity. The scale also provides an estimate rather than precise measurements.

“BIA accuracy is based on the sophistication of the device and strength of the algorithms used to make the predictions,” says McMahon. “Smart scales can provide valuable insight into your health by helping you follow trends over periods of time. Though there may be variance in the accuracy of the measurements, the change reflected can provide a picture of the direction in which your health markers are headed.”

For more accurate results, you’d need to use a more clinical machine, like a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scan.

Can multiple users share a smart scale?

Most smart scales are designed with this specific feature in mind, and you’ll find that they all have multiple user profiles to keep your personal data separate. Some smart scales can even detect who is standing on the scale based on your trends on the app, making it easy to store your new data without having to find your profile on the scale or app.

Do smart scales actually measure body fat?

Smart scales don’t measure body fat, but they do estimate the body fat percentage of each user based on the BIA method. “Most can measure accurately within 4% to 8%. Hydration levels can affect the accuracy of results,” says McMahon. If you want to measure body fat, using a DEXA scan would be a more accurate tool.

What is the most accurate way to measure body fat at home?

Measuring your body fat at home won’t ever be as accurate as getting it done professionally, but there are a few different methods that offer varying degrees of accuracy. Skinfold calipers measure the thickness of skinfolds at specific body sites, like your stomach or thigh. This is then used to measure your body fat percentage using a specific equation.

“The accuracy of calipers depends on the quality of the equipment being used and the competence of the person performing the assessment,” says McMahon. “They generally produce a measurement that is within 3.5% of the most accurate methods, but inaccuracy increases with the previously mentioned factors.”

A smart scale with BIA is another tool that provides results. Again, the most effective method, albeit not at home, is a DEXA scan.
