Okay. First the positives. I liked how religion was dealt with in a unbiased way (well... considering I didn't finish it, I don't know what happens with it in the end) and how it finally made a point that most religions aren't evil, it's the humans who use those religions to their advantage that is. The writing was great too. But the reason I dnf-ed it is becauseeee I didn't feel connected to the characters and I'm not intrigued in the plot anymore...
Kinda putting me into a reading slump too so had to stop and move on......more

The reason I'm knocking off a star is because I didn't really care for the politics of the world. I mean it was interesting I guess but tHERE'S AN ENCHANTED CASTLE FOR GOODNESS SAKE. I wanted more creepy castle scenes! Not just sitting at some inn. I did like the friendship between Harper and Zo (finally a girl/girl friendship where they aren't competing for the love of a guy) BUT. The whole "she's not like most girls" at the beginning had me rolling my eyes so much I had a headache. I also didn't like the hint of a love-triangle(view spoiler)[ at the end. Grey always felt like a older brother or even a dad to Harper (hide spoiler)]- wHY does there need to be a lOVE-trIANGLE, it's 2019 haven't authors learned that readers don't like them?!?!...more

Wow, you guys, this book... This book was fantastic! It was sold to me as a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, but it's so loosely based on Rumpelstil4.5 stars
Wow, you guys, this book... This book was fantastic! It was sold to me as a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, but it's so loosely based on Rumpelstiltskin and so stretched into a 470 page book that it didn't bare much resemblance to the original tale. It kind of bothered me because Rumpelstiltskin is one of my favourite fairy tales and I found loads of opportunities the author missed that could have made the story closer to Rumpelstiltskin, but it was amazing anyhow.
Irina was definitely my favourite character in the book, and I'm so annoyed that(view spoiler)[ she didn't get more of a send off. That ending scene was EPIC but it was told through Magreta's POV, I was quite disappointed. And more so because I NEED to know what happens to her now! Does Mirnatius and her live happily together or what! I need to know, and I'm so hacked off we don't know anything for sure. This is why people make fanfic. (hide spoiler)] Miryem was great, too, I loved the Jew rep.(view spoiler)[ I was not expecting, who I'm guessing and annoyed we don't get a clarification, is Rumpelstiltskin to marry Miryem in the end. At first I wanted that to happen, but as the book progressed and near the end, their chemistry disappeared and it felt weird they wanted to get married when I was led to believe that they hated each other (yes i'm now remembering that scene at the end of the fire dude's life, but I need more than that to go on.) Something about this book had an addicting quality that made me not want to put it down. I finished it just under a week, and boy, do I want to read Novik's other books now. This lady needs to keep writing, I need more!!...more
