This is the second book in the installment. I read through it as quickly as the first one. It was both a great escape and a great insight into the human experience. I would recommend it for anybody who wants to be swept in a story about another time and place yet with filled with universal human emotions. ...more

I've really become attached to Strike and Robin as I'm sure every reader who's made it this far had. They are such relatable human beings. They have just enough grit in them, actually quite a lot of grit in them, to make them undismissable. I will come back to this review at a later time and add more. ...more
I am going to write a review before I forget my thoughts on this book. The last one hit me so hard that I had to keep going without stopping to write a review. This one moved differently so it afforded me the opportunity to tell you all what I think.
Wow. I have been telling my friends and family how uncanny it is that I can identify with both Cormoran and Robin. I did not know what I was getting into with the series, that the main character would be an Afghani vet with a leg blown off and then secondary character would be a woman who was sexually assaulted in college and was dating an emotional abusive arse.
Four books into it and I finally had to say something about it.
There is so much relatable and relevant content in this book. I chalk it up to: J.K. Rowling is a single mother and a Christian so therefore it goes without saying we have commonalities.
Recently I came under fire for reading her because of her supposed views on transgender issues. I haven't seen her write anything about it in her books yet which is why I say supposed. I don't like when people tell me I can't read or talk about an author because she said something they didn't like. That goes against my core values. She did write about transable people in her previous book, which I will have to deal with later.
Let us get to the meat of this review.
I highly recommend this book for any woman who has ever been through an abusive relationship with a man. Many of Rowling's female characters have been mistreated by men they loved and she has done a real good job of showing the totality of their personalities. Some of these women populate this book, one notable one is Jimmy White's girlfriend: Flick. Jimmy White is one of the thugs that populate this particular tale.
I don't really want to get into the plot. Others have done that. That's available. I want to talk about the emotional and almost therapeutic impact of this book.
One of the most moving/touching/tender (I don't like those words) moments in the book is when Strike advises Robin on how to deal with her panic attacks. There is a big plot twist in this book that has to do with their personal lives that I will not give away. The relationship between Robin and Strike is well worth the time and energy to get to know. I find it a consolation to have found this series.
Next time maybe I'll do a more literary review.
Sorry if its disjointed, I'm out of practice doing book reports. It's been a long time....more
