This series definitely is genre bending horror at this point. There were some definite gruesome scenes in this one. The villain in this plot is 'The Surgeon' who does some unspeakable things.
We have the familiar cast of characters with Pendergast and Smithback and we meet a new one, Dr. Nora Kelly, archeologist.
Apparently Pendergast is a protege of Sherlock Holmes, he has a technique like the memory palace which just appears out of nowhere. That really threw me off.
I'm committed to this series so I hope the next one has a bit more of a linear narrative. I know some people really love this book in the series....more
