When I was listening to/reading it, I felt that Mr. King had hit upon a serious note with the suicide theme. The afterword where he encourages people to get help if they are feeling suicidal was confirmation that he was dealing with this difficult subject. I'm deeply impressed at the social issues Mr. King tackles in his writing, take racism for example. In almost every book I've read by him thus far there has been a prominent black person in the story. What's even more amazing is that he has evolved along with the time, so what he is writing in 2016 is relevant to today. If you want your emotions to be deeply moved, I would suggest this book....more

Initially I had to shelve the book because of some really graphic sex scenes in the beginning but then I read and even more graphic novel involving children, the girl next door, so I was able to finish this book.
It seems the author has a big bone to pick with the church and religion in general, like so much of today’s fiction. I agree that the author’s encyclopedic knowledge of exorcisms was impressive.
This book definitely left me with a disgusting, disturbed feeling. It had an interesting plot twist in the end.
I also agree that the dichotomy between mental illness and demonic possession was interesting. It is true that the church does believe in demonic possession.
This isn’t a “light” read , after all it’s in the “dark fiction “ genre but if you are looking for something that will surprise you in the very end , definitely check this number out. ...more

They were written in the 70s and 80s and they really bring you back to the culture of that time. If Stephen King is one of of your fav writers and you want to get to know his work a little better, this is a good way to do it. He really has no peers, but the closest approximation I can think of is along came a spider by james patterson. ...more

Who would have ever guessed that the soldiers would have their minds downloaded into another body. Its like something out of the tv show The 100. Immortality through mind drives, only in this case for a different purpose.
There are a few touching points in this book. One of them being family. Marriage and family mean a lot to the author and you can really hear this coming through in this novel. When John describes married life to Jane it is obvious that is coming from a rich appreciation of it. Likewise the author really has an appreciation for life and the experience gained through living a long time.
There is a lot of fighting towards the end, but that's to be expected, look at the title of the book.
Old Man's War is the first of a series and I'm definitely planning to read the next one. ...more

Dean Koontz is a softer writer then Stephen King, his edges aren't so sharp. I'm glad I read it as its kind of classic among the kind of readers I virtually hang out with. I don't know that I'll read anymore in the series for awhile....more

MaybeI’d been wanting to read this book for a very long time. I tried in the past and stopped. My dad calls Jo nesbø writing too dense like pea soup. Maybe that’s what stopped me before. Who knows. Maybe I lived a little more and got to a place where I understood Harry Hole. I finished this audio book in 3 days. That’s a record.
The characters are very relatable. They struggle with despair, angst, uncertainty. To be continued. ...more

Although it was very dry, the sardonic and acerbic wit of many of the characters was its saving grace. If you are a fan of satire, you may get a kick out of Foundation. ...more
