A couple years later I started to see it as a propaganda, written for Polish people in times when Poland as a country didn't exist (after the Partitions of Poland). I felt cheated because I thought earlier that the historical background was totally true. I needed next years to understand that Sienkiewicz simply wrote an enjoyable books for readers and to earn for living.
So, I think it is (as the other books from The Trilogy) an entertaining novel, as far as you don't expect that it is consistent with the real historical facts....more

This is a book about children, growing up, about siblings and so on. For sure, I am going to read it the third time in the future. Then I will write more.

What a boring novel (considering that it was an adventure book it sounds odd, but it was so to me). Honestly, I went through it only because I wanted to verify it fairly with my memories from school when I read it. It was so different. I have searched and found out that here (in Poland) we read in school a version by Stanisław Stampf’l that isn't just a translation but had many changes from the original. It explains my confusion.
Summarizing, I understand that it was one of the first novels, that there was an action and that there was a message (a lesson) for a reader but most of the time, I was just bored....more
