I have a nostalgic fondness for this series. Amelia is one of those people who is *so* obsessed with her own cleverness, but in a really endearing way? It works for some characters, I guess. On any other, I would be annoyed. Really, the mystery in book 1 is super contrived and annoying, but I remember being so charmed by Amelia (and I still am) that I overlook all of that. *shrug* Objectivity out the window with this one....more

Are there obvious issues with racism and whatnot? Duh. It's not fun being a Mexican reading this book.
Is this book still one of my all time favorites? Yes. I grew up on LD and westerns like it, and I'll never stop loving them. The women in this book are strong and get shit done. The men are funny and tough. The story makes me want to set off down the road and have adventures of my own....more

Buuut i have the same problem here I had with her Lovecraft PI story - there's just something off about the pace. The characters all accept their fates too easily, everything cruises along with very little consideration. I get that it's a novella, and there is a lot packed into the story. I feel like it should have been a book, and in trying to make it shorter, CK took out a lot of necessary transitions.
I know I'm in the minority here, CK is riding a rising star right now. I'm hoping to see something full length from her soon....more

On the one hand, I really did not think it was as strong a tale as book 1, and I really don't find the ending satisfying.
On the other hand, the narrators were absolutely fantastic and I was riveted to the story despite finding faults. While it lacks things that I want to see from a technical standpoint, it somehow still manages to make that special undefinable connection with me as a reader. So 4 stars, I guess, though I might have done 3 had I reviewed it right as soon as I finished it....more
DNF at about 45%. I'm kinda angry. This book had an awesome premise, and a talented writer behind the wheel. I loved Six Gun Tarot by the same guy.

So why are there amateur mistakes left and right? The scene that finally broke the camel's back included no less than half a dozen cases of head hopping, none of which were necessary. The book is not written in omniscient 3rd, these were just sloppy writing.
There were some really great moments and lines, but always broken by clunky description or just boring bits that didn't add much to anything. So disappointed. ...more

It's not exactly what I would call awe inspiring writing, but I am only too happy to check out for a while and go along for the ride. It's very much like one of those silly adventure shows (Doctor Who is the perfect comparison) that don't really force you to think but you can easily become a huge fan of in just a few short episodes. I'm looking forward to book 4 at the end of this year....more

It requires some willingness to accept a wacky premise, but it wasn't just thrown together. Jesus H, save me from endless repetition, a really out of character action that altered the entire plot, and an overwhelming "pretty women = evil" message. Yes, world, all women who are attractive are evil and are out to get all plain women, it is known. *so many eyerolls*
This book satisfied an urge I was having for something different. Now back to the safety of my usual fare. ...more
