Through her writing, I've explored the days when the west was a new land, still being shaped and discovered. The women in her books have character, strength that they might not be aware of, but that helps them live in the raw, new land where they are settled. I usually learn something, too, which is always an added bonus. But this book just didn't make the cut for me. The writing didn't come to life. I abandoned it at page 114. Beret, and her dead sister, and all the other surrounding characters just couldn't hold me. Sorry....more

Well, I guess I don't,"Who doesn't like a good ghost story, even a light-hearted one," I asked myself as I picked this up on the book exchange shelf? Well, I guess I don't, because this missed the mark entirely with me. Screaming ghosts are fine in Harry Potter, but a shrieking one didn't cut it with me. I had no like for either of the two main characters, and found myself dreading picking up the book to read. Got to page 177 and called it quits on screaming Sadie, her lost necklace, and Lara, her grand-niece. The best thing I can say about the book? The previous reader apparently used a book of first class stamps as a bookmark, and left it in the book when she abandoned it, approximately the same place I did.
Sadly, this one didn't grab me. I am letting it go to find another reader.Sadly, this one didn't grab me. I am letting it go to find another reader....more

This book was adored by one friend whose tastes in reading are pretty similar to mine, but despised by another. I've tried several times to read this, and never gotten very far. Same this time. However, Jen Lancaster just appeared at an Post Courier Authors Luncheon, and was an amusing, articulate, and witty speaker, with a certain amount of depth. I suppose, were I to stick through with this, I'd find that woman. But first, I need the courage to get through the self-absorbed one in the first part of the book. Though I will say, she's honest. The subtitle of the book is "Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office"....more

This is an author I tend to like, so was delighted to add this to my TBR pile. However, I gave up on it. The footnoting drove me crazy, and the story just didn't appeal all that much, maybe having been immersed in the world of house hunting and home improvement far too recently. Plus, I didn't particularly like the main character. Another time, perhaps. ...more

It's even set near where I grew up. But ultimately, I don't have the patience for it right now, and will release it unfinished. If I hear fabulous reviews, I'll pick it back up from the library. I bid it farewell at Chapter 12....more
Started this, but just can't fall into the story. My mind is racing too much to settle into it, I guess. (We sold our house! We are house hunting! We Started this, but just can't fall into the story. My mind is racing too much to settle into it, I guess. (We sold our house! We are house hunting! We are moving! Soon!) Plus, I feel snookered, because while the jacket blurb sounded interesting (' What would you do if the dream you had last night came true today? Legal secretary Amy Clarke is a budding romance novelist with an active imagination. However, unlike other writers, the inspiration for her books doesn’t come when she’s awake; it happens while she sleeps") I somehow missed it was one of those faith based novels. Now, I am a woman of faith, but some of those books just rub me the wrong way. (Just like I am a romantic, but most romances make me gag.)
Anyhow, I'm releasing all BookCrossing books that I stumble upon so we don't have to pack/move/unpack them in whatever we find. We're downsizing, so the book collection gets thinned again. ...more

Couldn't stand the characters, didn't find amusement where I think it might have been intended. The above was written in 2012 o4 2013. Carried this book to our cabin, which we sold April 2018, and then brought it home to read. Which I finally did. Hard for me to reconcile the actor who plays Father Brown with the description of him in the stories in this book. Fun to read though, and very old school British....more
