It was introduced as a romance with a bit of angst, a teen love affair. It was a little magical at the beginning. A very enjoyable but small portion of the book.
It soon turned into a drama fest. The leads spent more time arguing than loving. Not only that, but as a spin off series, i felt that just too much was re-hashed, re-used. Same themes, words, jokes, people. And an attempt to cram them all in. Both the former and the latter took away too much from the romance.
I really disliked the inner-monologue of Logan while he was getting high, it was kind of gross, crass. He describes smoking weed as a relationship, calling weed Mary, psychedelic thoughts where she talks to him, controls him, makes love to him. It was really distasteful and heavily featured.
When the 77% mark hit, what Logan did was worse than our heroine's (Aubrey's) ex. And he was a scumbag. From then on i lost the little care left in me for the book. I skimmed to the end. It was a disappointment for sure. Logan went about everything the wrong way, made all the wrong choices, and didn't deserve Aubrey.
By the time the root of all the angst was revealed, the 'Oh so this is why he's messed up!' reveal, i didn't really care. I lost compassion for Logan, i didn't really want to see their relationship salvaged.
This one was totally lost on me. Drama without the feels, the 20 year old man whore, cheating, a hero that causes more pain in the heroine than love.... all things i try to avoid reading about.
The whole thing just felt like a book draft. For eg; The amount of !!!!!!!!!!!! marks. The inconsistenties, flitting from one thing to the n2.5 Stars.
The whole thing just felt like a book draft. For eg; The amount of !!!!!!!!!!!! marks. The inconsistenties, flitting from one thing to the next without introducing a scene. The severe lack of description, apart from muscles & glasses that is. The banter that fell short because it was quick but not sharp.
The characters i didn't have a problem with, they were nice enough. The H's traumatic past didn't work for me with lack of emotion & the OTT-ness of it. The twist had me rolling my eyes.
It WAS cute, nice & easy. The H reminded me of Mal from Play by Kylie Scott. But i felt like nothing REALLY happened & that the writing needed a major overhaul....more

I sorta me'd about quite a bit of this book. I didn't generally like the characters, they were okay. The angst over-load was too much for me, for eg, it's not bad enough to have one family member die tragically, but we need 3 to die tragically. The characters don't actually meet until 73 pages in/20% of the way through. It was all just a little... bland with a little to much drama. That said, it was nicely written, there wasn't anything that turned me off reading, and it was generally okay.

I quite liked the uniqueness of the characters in 'Penance' and it did have it's good moments. But the whole thing was too OTT for me.
The characters problems/pasts were BAD problems, but their reaction to them was too much, there was too much anxiety and angst from them. No kissing, no touching, doesn't like circles, has to be near an exit, doesn't like the way women smell, prefers to talk to strangers, just sex, no sex, doesn't like being around people, both in a self contained exile, has tattoos to heal, has some kind of OCD, is indifferent.... I swear I could go on.
Then there was the way they stared at each other in multiple encounters for the whole first 30% of the book, both understanding the other just by looking at them. They wear 'masks' and have 'walls'.
The OTT love of books. I get it. They love books. How many book titles can we name drop? Or song titles?
Lastly, the corny dialogue. It was too much, too preachy, overly sickly and the main reason I rated it so low.
For eg, in their first verbal encounter the heroine says this;
'We pass strangers daily and forget that they have their own story. We are minor characters in theirs as they are ours. So I learned to listen and let them tell me theirs. The customers who always were willing to tell their stories to a a stranger were those who held sadness in their eyes. They lost part of themselves to their memories and needed someone to listen so they might be found.'
I suppose if you like this kind profoundness, then you wouldn't agree with me. But yeah, there was a lot of this kind of dialogue, which to me was unrealistic.
'When we are living we have control of our masks. In death, we lose that control and secrets who themselves to the world. It's as if they sleep in peace, waiting for the last breath to come so they can move with freedom, spreading their wings across loved ones left alive.'...more

Quinn has definitely had her fair share of man problems. She's had relationships with; The Abusive But Dead one & The Caught Cheating With The Bestie one. Now she's got two more at the same time in the shape of; The Bad Boy That's Only In It For one Thing one & The Preppy Won't Leave Her Alone one. What's a girl to do?
29 year old Teacher, Quinn loves bad boys, she is sworn off relationships and enjoys a no strings attached deal with Tyler, the wannabe rockstar who gets his rocks off and leaves her to see to her own. Quinn loves his rough touch and the lack of emotions. But when 'Reed Preppy Porter' barges into her life, she's finding herself very annoyed and panting with lust.
Side Effects started choppily. Then it became repetitive; the first 40% or so just kept on repeating her moaning about how Reed is not her type but she wants him - she thinks, her encounters with Tyler and 'bumping' into Reed. The drama from Tyler seemed very out of character and Quinn's drama at the end made her look like a whiny fool. Add in some corniness, well used lines, a four day romance, the fact that it needed editing... and come out with a 2.5 star read. The saving grace was the fact that my heart went out to Reed, he deserved someone better than Quinn though....more

Innocent and INCREDIBLY naïve Willow has just turned eighteen. When her cousin takes her out for a night of partying, she stumbles upon the Playroom.
I wouldn't call this a romance, at least, not a conventional one and it's not heavily erotic, I've labelled it as more of a drama. And It's almost like it's about a town full of hippies, spreading the love, dominating and submitting to one another.
The book starts off with establishing what kind of girl Willow is. She's almost child-like in body – incredibly tiny in every aspect - and in mind: You know when you're saying something naughty in tongues so the kids don't catch on? Well, Willow doesn't catch on. She does know some things, but not the explicit things that are going on in town. When her handsome crush walks into her workplace, her boss – Auggie - gets very protective and as a birthday gift gives her a choker stating that she is Auggie's property.
From there on it escalates into a free-for-all buffet of sex and drama, with Willow's sexual discovery and womanization at the forefront. By the end, I was actually quite proud of her.

'Good Girl' explores a lot of sexual themes, to name a few; ménage, bisexuality, age & size difference, BDSM, voyeurism... But the main two are multiple partners/sharing and Dom/sub, with almost a DaddyDom/BabyGirl relationship between the two lead characters.
Some bits were a little risky, for eg; (view spoiler)[brother holding a man's hands down while his sister gives the man a blowjob. (hide spoiler)] As for the hippy commune feel? Well no-one is out of bounds: Willow's brother, her long-time crush, the dog walker, her boss... They all like to play in the playrooms and sexual orientation doesn't exist either.
So what did/didn't I like about it?
I deducted a star because I wasn't entirely comfortable with the multiple partners aspect, also it felt too long.
Most of this book is wonderfully weird. I admired that it was 'not afraid to go there'. I also liked that it didn't take itself seriously in regards to some things, ie 'The Beast'. I grew to really like Willow, the taboo-ness of the sex was fun to read and boundary pushing, the dry humour here and there added to it also....more

BLURB: Orphaned at a young age, eighteen year old Bronagh is used to keeping people at a distance, afraid to let anyone in and eventually get hurt. That all changes the day the hot American Dominic walks into her school and is constantly in her face. Everywhere she turns, he's there, annoying the fuck out of her. Of course, that can only mean one thing...
I had a ton of issues with this book. It really was not for me. Mostly though, there was a lot of repetition, everything was far too overdone or OTT for my liking.
Hard to believe that Dominic was an 18 year old. Bronagh's body issues. I got it, I didn't need to be reminded of it all the time. The violent behaviors in nearly every character... Bronagh slaps and punches and throws things at Dominic, who punches Jason, Gavin headbutts Dominic, Dominic bites Bronagh, Branna punches Dominic and scratches Ryder, Destiny attacks Bronagh and so does Micah.... This all really happens, and probably more. Two hundred and seventy odd versions of the word 'fuck' it got a little annoying and pointless. On the mention of repetition, there was 100+ eye rolls too. **Eye roll** Even though Dominic declares 'she's mine', that does not necessarily mean he's hers. Share the love. 'The first time always hurts for girls.' Er... no... it doesn't. - this line later redeemed itself by pointing out that sperm doesn't really taste great. Lol. Then to top it all off I find out that the one guy I liked - Damien - turns out to be a bit of an ass too.
I really enjoyed the first 20% it was funny. So I will try the 2nd book, but refrain from rating/reviewing if I don't like it, because it will be my own fault. As for that 20%, I really liked the 'love/hate' storyline, Bronagh was incredibly funny. She was argumentative, silly, kind of violent and sarcastic. Then it just went badly from there out for me, there was far too much of the mentioned above, too much arguing and everything that went with it....more

Chelsea loves him even though he hates himself. Hes violent (towards her too) and unfaithful. Hes wrong in so many ways. Theres murder, drugs, humiliation.... All amongst a bunch of 16 to 18yr olds.
I don't like this book. But.... the writer wrote it well and did exceed her goal of producing a book that is completely messed up....more
