Instead,That this epic story managed to wrap up in a great way, I didn’t see coming. I expected it to fizzle out in predictable and good enough ways. Instead, it ended up having everything you could ask for in a good story.
There’s adventure, intrigue, love, test of character, multiple fairly well thought through personalities interacting in interesting ways, beauty, suspense, melancholy, mystique and even a great ending.
Also, this is a story interested in the fates of the characters in it, and told by people passionate about telling it. It is not focused on in what way the characters and their story serve a purpose for shallow political points in todays society, like so much of pop culture these days. I sure hope this isn’t the last piratey themed book these creators have done or will do in the future. I’ll follow for more. Give me more!...more

Fortunately, some of them were heading somewhere approximating a conclusion in this one. Like the previous volumes, the writing is alright and the art is alright. Heavy focus is on the happenings on the boat and pretty much nothing outside of it, so we lose the sense of traveling and exploration a bit. The plot is interesting enough, with lots of characters. I’m a sucker for the period (1700s) and seafaring. However, it is mostly an introduction or a setup, it feels like. It is a good start though, and I’m eager to continue ...more

It is cozy and inviting on one hand and confusing on the other. The writer tries to be deep and interesting but fails most of the time. At the same time, the introspective texts still help create a melancholic mood that I like. The art helps achieve this effect. Though it is inconsistent, it is still good. The color effects on two-face, for example, are really cool.
I rather read a story that tries a bit too much, and explore novel ideas, than a dull one that plays it too safe. City of Madness is definitely in the former category, and for that I give it credit. It ultimately fails in too many ways though, so I cannot recommend it amongst other good Batman stories...more

You already know the gender of his (Constantine) badass, no nonsense bodyguard, and you already know the race of his son. You already know there will be capitalist critique, and when a random cop shows up in the middle of the story, you already know how the cop will treat his son. And if you didn't understand the writer's subtle political messaging yet, he helps you out. The cop screams: "Keep your [insert color of skin here] [insert cuss word here] hands where I can see them"...more

Review for #1-#3. Cool art from Fegredo throughout, though not very varied in mood (that's because of the story, not because he isn't capable). Story Review for #1-#3. Cool art from Fegredo throughout, though not very varied in mood (that's because of the story, not because he isn't capable). Story starts out of nowhere and I have no clue what's what. Someone needs to do something in order to achieve something, but the reader doesn't get to know. Just a very random story and action scenes the entire way through
This is a story about a boss action girl. They don't want to call it Boss Girl featuring Giant Robot, because then I wouldn't pay my hard earned money to buy it, so they use the Hellboy character to sell stories about other characters (the same way they often do these days with other famous characters). Does it have anything to do with Hellboy? No - except the first page or so.

I can't imagine the amount of time it must've taken - even for a master like Ross - to finish this work. If not for the art, I would probably rate this closer to 1/5. I just couldn't bring myself to rate it a 2, so had to have it just reaching 3 by rounding.
Pretty early on, I asked myself after a session of reading, how it is possible that the writer for this is the same as for the omnibus I recently read (Batman by Paul Dini), which is a collection of solid stories. I thought that maybe DC had a finger in the game, and that they wanted to create sort of an introduction for young kids to their super hero gallery. However, after reading the afterwords it was clear that this was in large part the vision of Alex Ross.
The stories are extremely tame, and old school, if you will. They aim to build interpersonal emotion and a sense of grandeur for the heroes. Sometimes this works decently well, but most of the time the lack of background, dialogue and stakes make it fall flat. The stories have very little to do with adventure, suspense or action. Inner dialogue and narration take up most of the text. Sometimes it's cringe, and most of the time it's pretentious.
I'm so sad to say that this is a huge missed opportunity to create something long lasting and unique. It is worth reading for fans of art, or to see the heroes in a more realistic setting. Other than that, there is not much here ...more
