Giant Robot Hellboy #1

Rate this book
Hellboy is kidnapped and hooked up to a massive mecha-Hellboy for a mission on a mysterious, faraway island, but the island might just put up a fight of its own. Inspired by Mignola's viral-hit pencil drawings from Mike The Quarantine Sketchbook, Giant Robot Hellboy gets his own story in this 3-part miniseries from Mignola and longtime Hellboy artist Duncan Fegredo!

Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.

In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.

In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.

Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.

Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

Super goofy concept. On an unknown island of the coast of Africa some scientists have built a Mecha-Hellboy to fight a Godzilla type monster.

The execution so far is spectacular -- but I am the world's biggest Duncan Fegredo mark.

This should end up being a really fun Hellboy story.

More of a look than a read. There is dialogue and there are description boxes but really the artwork tells the story. Has Iron Giant meets Frankenstein vibes

Review for #1-#3. Cool art from Fegredo throughout, though not very varied in mood (that's because of the story, not because he isn't capable). Story starts out of nowhere and I have no clue what's what. Someone needs to do something in order to achieve something, but the reader doesn't get to know. Just a very random story and action scenes the entire way through

This is a story about a boss action girl. They don't want to call it Boss Girl featuring Giant Robot, because then I wouldn't pay my hard earned money to buy it, so they use the Hellboy character to sell stories about other characters (the same way they often do these days with other famous characters). Does it have anything to do with Hellboy? No - except the first page or so.

Pretty cool art, and pretty bad story

I think Duncan Fegredo is my favorite non-Mignola artist who does Hellboy. Yes, this is just #1 of 3, but... I couldn't quite get enough interest in what the heck was going on to make me spend another $8 to read the rest of the series. I mean... the idea is kind of cool, and I love the cover. I think if I had more plentiful funds I would read the rest of it.

Love the pacing of the panels and incredibly awesome to have Duncan Fegredo back on drawing duties for Hellboy.

Who would've thought that single sketch Mignola drew during the early days of this pandemic would lead to this?

But like for reals, Hellboy vs Kaiju? And Hellboys a giant robot? Like really? Yes please 🙏

The concept is fun, but all this book does is raise weird questions and introduce new characters that aren’t explored. More of a 2.5
