Speak No Evil Reviews

There is something extra special about this new entry into the genre, and that is in large part thanks to [James] McAvoy's gritty, unhinged, completely mesmerizing performance.

If you've never savored the blood and bite of a steak, this processed remake will probably serve just fine.

Also have you seen McAvoy? He is a great actor who did not need any special effects to play a person with split personalities in “Split” (2016), and in “Speak No Evil,” he gives a fearless performance on multiple levels: the micro expressions

For viewers looking for solid horror with an effective and eerie comic undertone, Speak No Evil says a lot.

Don't underestimate the film's timely moral to the story — a chilling reminder of what happens when good people fail to set and enforce boundaries for acceptable behavior.

Speak No Evil is a twisted, suspenseful experience that keeps you engaged despite being a slow-burn.

...a slightly overlong yet perpetually watchable thriller...

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 18, 2024

Speak No Evil eventually goes full-on with the familiar horror movie blood-spattering, but the social satire in that well-executed build-up is the real strength of the film.

The screenplay demands healthy suspensions of disbelief, and the ending probably will disappoint fans of the original. Otherwise, Speak No Evil builds enough suspense and anxiety to support McAvoy's performance as the screen's latest charismatic lunatic.

This is a psychological thriller that lies in wait for its audience, slowly building the skin-prickling sense that something is terribly amiss.

2024 Speak No Evil does manage to become its own thing outside of the shadow of the original, but by paying the price of being a far less interesting film

McAvoy’s miscalculated lead performance undermines a movie that, otherwise, does have some solid chops at committing to a subdued atmosphere.

Compared to the Danish original, the final act is diluted for mass appeal; however, the film’s pacing is better, the characters are more robust, and the performances by James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis make this a much better film.

McAvoy's ability to turn into a monster on a dime is full force here, though sometimes the film is over reliant on his skillset to muscle through. For fans of the original this is a much tamer interpretation.

The accumulated tension skilfully erupts into nail-biting suspense in the final act, expertly played by a terrific cast.

The current version maintains the sociological focus but downplaying the importance of territorial origin to adhere to class and economic reasons. Speak No Evil is not a simple remake, there is a reinterpretation work and several differences...

This movie annoyed the daylights out of me, and it's because I'm so accustomed to this genre where naive people do lots of stupid things for an hour and then spend they spend half an hour paying for it.

It emerges as a discussion-worthy horror thriller that uses an existing foundation to become something different but worthwhile, which sticks with us after it ends.

Before the bloodletting kicks off, it’s engaging as a popcorn thriller about the weakness of not being able to simply walk away.

Terrific! This is the movie to see. McAvoy, you are September’s movie boyfriend. Director Watkins has the audience yelling and cleverly brings a sly homoerotic element that adds a gnarly subtext that infiltrates the carnage.
