Airhead #2

Being Nikki

Rate this book
THINGS AREN'T PRETTY FOR EMERSON WATTS.

Em was sure there couldn't be anything worse than being a brainiac in the body of a teenaged supermodel.

But it turned out she was wrong.

It turns out she has a mother who's gone mysteriously missing, a brother who's shown up on her doorstep demanding answers, a former best friend who's intent on destroying Stark Enterprises, and a British heartthrob who's written a song about her that's topping the charts.

How can Em balance all that with school and runway shows - especially when she's got ex-boyfriends crawling out of the woodwork who want more than just a photo op, a sister who is headed to the high school cheerleading championships, and a company she represents that seems to be turning to the dark side...

Not to mention trying to convince the love of her life that models aren't really airheads after all... especially one model in particular.

BUT THEN, NOBODY SAID IT WAS GOING TO BE EASY BEING NIKKI.

Librarian note: AKA Jenny Carroll (1-800-Where-R-You series), AKA Patricia Cabot (historical romance novels).

Meg Cabot was born on February 1, 1967, during the Chinese astrological year of the Fire Horse, a notoriously unlucky sign. Fortunately she grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, where few people were aware of the stigma of being a fire horse -- at least until Meg became a teenager, when she flunked freshman Algebra twice, then decided to cut her own bangs. After six years as an undergrad at Indiana University, Meg moved to New York City (in the middle of a sanitation worker strike) to pursue a career as an illustrator, at which she failed miserably, forcing her to turn to her favorite hobby--writing novels--for emotional succor. She worked various jobs to pay the rent, including a decade-long stint as the assistant manager of a 700 bed freshmen dormitory at NYU, a position she still occasionally misses.

She is now the author of nearly fifty books for both adults and teens, selling fifteen million copies worldwide, many of which have been #1 New York Times bestsellers, most notably The Princess Diaries series, which is currently being published in over 38 countries, and was made into two hit movies by Disney. In addition, Meg wrote the Mediator and 1-800-Where-R-You? series (on which the television series, Missing, was based), two All-American Girl books, Teen Idol, Avalon High, How to Be Popular, Pants on Fire, Jinx, a series of novels written entirely in email format (Boy Next Door, Boy Meets Girl, and Every Boy's Got One), a mystery series (Size 12 Is Not Fat/ Size 14 Is Not Fat Either/Big Boned), and a chick-lit series called Queen of Babble.

Meg is now writing a new children's series called Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls. Her new paranormal series, Abandon, debuts in Summer of 2011.

Meg currently divides her time between Key West, Indiana, and New York City with a primary cat (one-eyed Henrietta), various back-up cats, and her husband, who doesn't know he married a fire horse. Please don't tell him.

Having read "Airhead" the first book in the series I couldn't stop myself from wanting to know what happens next and decided to read "Being Nikki". Surprisingly it was more enjoyable than the previous one, as it did not suffer from the occasional trip down the memory lane which was in abundance in "Airhead". But still there is one thing I can't help commenting about and that is on the character of Nikki Howard/Emmerson Watts. She thinks too much. Of course it is the writing style followed throughout the book but then why should she be so redundant in her thoughts. For example whenever she comes across any boy who is slightly interested in her she goes on a reminiscence of her ex-best friend who is the only boy she is interested in and who having no idea about her identity hates her. When I first started reading this book I thought thank god this book doesn't start like all the other "part of a series" books that starts by recounting the events of the previous books but after reading further in to the book I realized a small recounting of events at the beginning was so much better than encountering them in every other chapter in the book. Least to say reading through this was extremely tiresome. Nevertheless the story was enjoyable and the characters though cliche leaves a lasting impression especially the character of Steven Howard.

In the second installment the tide has turned for our super model/brain transplant heroine. Everyone id trying to use her. The evil company wants her to shut up and pose pretty so they can sell more crap, every boyfriend wants her body not her mind, her sister wants her fame, and the guy she’s always loved wants her to help him bring down the evil company.
Lots and lots of plot development with the characters growing without losing their personalities.
Good book, very important to the series. Remember to read them in order.

Because so many people know her primarily for THE PRINCESS DIARIES, including myself, I feel like it often gets overlooked that Meg Cabot writes a lot fabulous genre fiction. Ghost stories, witch stories, King Arthur . . . and this series, which has more than a touch of science fiction happening. And I am enjoying it thoroughly, both for the light tone and humor, and the wild plot. And the plot, might I add, just keeps getting wilder!

...MUCH better ending than the previous Airhead book. Still a cliffhanger, but one that felt like, you know, I'd gotten a complete book out of the situation. I actually had a moment of genuine (vicarious) romantic thrillage towards the end. Because I am old and have read too many romances, it's hard to get that thrill anymore. I read romances nowadays for the other reasons one reads romances, but seriously, my own romantic life has been good enough that getting excited over other people's "I love you" is no longer what it's about.

Anyway. The Airhead series is about a girl who gets a brain transplant (shhhh... go with it) and has to pose as the person whose body she gets put into. And keep her true identity a secret. Yes! There's enough tension in this wonderfully absurd scenario that not only did I run out and buy the next book, but that my toes curled at one point! Such a fun series, in a totally awesome-ridiculous way.

BTW, if you think the Airhead series premise is too much, that's only because you don't know about Pregnesia.

At the end of the last book we were questioning whether Christopher finally understood the meaning of the dinosaur stickers Em (in Nikki's body) left for him. At the beginning of Being Nikki, we are thrown in the middle of a photo shoot where Em/Nikki is bikini-clad and sitting on a rock surrounded by shark infested waters. What an opener! When she returns to home, a stranger awaits her. He is none other than Nikki's brother! Em had no idea, Lulu had no idea, heck, no one in the world knew Nikki Howard had a brother because Nikki kept her family and her roots a big big secret.

Lulu had her dial to love-sick puppy mode as soon as she laid eyes on Nikki's brother. It was funny how far she went to get him to pay her a little attention. She was living in her own bubble! Em was really cynical in this book. She lost her identity half way in the book when she discovered Christopher actually liked her. Em keeps referring to herself in third person as the 'dead girl' and even says how she was jealous of the 'dead girl' whom Christopher liked. Whaaa? Have some respect self-respect, girl! The addition of Nikki's brother was refreshing because he seemed to be the most normal character.

Ignoring Em's attitude and narrative, the plot was quite good. There was a good mystery that fueled me into finishing the book. Nikki's brother sought Nikki/Em out to find out about their/his mother as Mrs Howard had disappeared without a trace. Em enlists the help of Christopher and his computer genius cousin Felix. It was through hacking classified information that Christopher discovered the truth about Em's brain procedure.

The big revelation that Nikki didn't suffer from a brain aneurysm but purposely murdered by Stark was something I saw coming but nevertheless was impactful, what with Nikki stepping out of the shadows and revealing herself in an average girl's body. The cliffhanger was cool. I never expected Brandon Stark to have the brains to be manipulative and threaten Em to play along with his game to ensure the safety of her family, the Howards and Christopher.

Being Nikki was fun and didn't take things too seriously, which made for easy reading.

i’ll start by saying, objectively, this book isn’t fantastic. the main character is supposedly smart, yet her thought process functions a whole lot like the stereotypically shallow model’s body she currently occupies. (she’s jealous because her former best friend and crush, christopher, is in love with em. even though she’s em. she’s jealous of herself and calls her ‘a dead girl.’ i know.) some of her thoughts are rather redundant and repetitive. that being said, there really is just something about the writing that is addictive, and i binged it. maybe it’s because it’s simple, and i knew that nothing truly horrible was going to happen. either way, it was sort of like a guilty pleasure, because i loved it.

the first book in the series focused on em’s transformation - her brain into body transplant. this book explored what happens afterwards - what living as a model, when she’s really just a high school student, is really like, and what this means when it comes to connecting with her family and convincing christopher to fall in love with her in her new body. the plot was also more complex here, adding in other character’s motives and a mystery aspect, when nikki’s brother shows up at her doorstep with the news that her mother has been missing for months, and begging for her help to find her. there was a satisfying plot twist with adequate foreshadowing, although i’ll admit that the ending felt a little rushed, and that the character’s emotions could’ve used a little more depth to them.

i did have a good time reading this novel, though. it reminded me of being a preteen again, when nothing truly important mattered.

God, I can't believe I read this entire book. The entire time I wanted to shoot myself for ever thinking Meg Cabot was a good writer at any point in my life. I miss her funny and really REALLY easy-to-read books, most of the time, but this was a huge disappointment. Maybe this is targeted to a certain age group, maybe I should have just stopped reading, but I really wanted it to get better (though the plot itself was terrible).

Super repetitive "I can't believe he loves me! But not really me, the dead me", etc., etc. These characters need to grow up.

Well, this was quite a fun, if silly at times, read! I chose it for a reading game even though it's the second book in the series--it probably would have been better if I'd read the first one first. If you are like me about that, then skip the spoiler parts and don't read the book description before reading Airhead, the first book (which I'll read next). While there is nothing brilliant or literary about Cabot's novels, they are fun y/a romances and this one has some intrigue in it, to boot. But I hadn't realized until I was part way through what the title really meant. Where was Meg Cabot when I was the right age for these books? Still not an adult, that's what, and to get good action adventures you had to look outside of y/a for girls back then--things like Nancy Drew were fun, but nothing as wild as this.

I really enjoyed Airhead, the previous book in this series. It had the novelty of an average, non-girly girl being forced to suddenly work as a supermodel. There were the mishaps, the romance(s), and the realization that the job was so much harder than she's imagined, yet retaining her humility.

Being Nikki, however, showed Em becoming pretty self-involved, which automatically lowered my opinion of her as a protagonist. Basically, Cabot spends most of the pages of this book reminding us over and over how much it sucked that Em was put in the supermodel body and she had to pretend to be her (otherwise her family would be in deep trouble); also, how her crush wouldn't notice her since he was still hung up on dead Em. Seriously, Cabot? I get it. I don't need it drilled into my skull every other page. Without this annoyance, the plot might actually be pretty good - it turns out Stark Corporations (which has an uncanny resemblance to WalMart) is being all sinister and there's more to the body-mind switching than meets the eye - Em (along with her boy posse) must figure out what's happening before it's too late. The last few pages were absolutely gripping; as long as Em doesn't angst all the time, I'd like to see how this series ends.

If there's one thing Meg Cabot is good at doing, it's making you feel something really strongly (not necessarily in a good way.)

From the first book in this series, I thought Em Watts was a opinionated feminist. She appeared classy and amusing in one, and her feelings felt like yours--you could literally feel her desperation.

However in most parts of this book, Em appeared as really annoying. I understand this was supposed to add humor, but it got really irritating. I mean, "The thing was, it wasn't me. I had no control over it. It was Nikki. She was just boy crazy like that." I understand she's in Nikki's body, but honestly, making out with other boys because you say "Nikki's body just can't help it?" That's ridiculous, not to mention there are multiple sexist situations in which Em did not comment on at all.

The ending almost made up for the bad start though,

Overall pretty good, though not as good as the first book in the series.

Take all my comments about the previous book in this series, "Airhead," and multiply it by two. This book contains illogical leaps in reasoning by a supposedly intelligent main character, unbelievable dialogue, extensive harping on dead subjects (no pun intended), and idiotic decisions by the main character. What is there to like about Em/Nikki? Not really anything. She is nothing like the original Em in the first third of the first book. Now she is just a confused and stupid amorphous non-entity. And she's annoying to boot. One of my least favorite things about the storyline is how she decides much too quickly that Christopher is an "evil supervillin." Give me a break. Just an illustration of how Cabot preserved the nerdiness of Em without any of the intelligence.

When normal, average, teenager Emerson Watts finds herself in the body of a supermodel, things suddenly get a lot more complicated.

Oh my god. OH. MY. GOD. I LOVED this book. I'm SO glad I read it! The first book in the series was "okay". But the ending was enough of a cliff-hanger to make me want to read book 2 and find out what happened.

I'M SO GLAD I DID! :D :D :D

It was...AMAZING. It was EXACTLY the kind of book I love. I just...I don't know what to say. :/ This has to be the worst review in history. All I'm doing is sputtering. Literally.

I was completely taken aback by the turn the book took towards the end. I never saw it coming. Meg Cabot it known for her hilarious, flirty, fun books. They're typical chick-lit. But I'd be lying if I said she couldn't come up with a killer plot. Unbelievable. How does she do it? HOW?? Somehow she incorporated something completely serious into the Airhead series. And she did it so WELL. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. :) And now I have become a die-hard fan and am going to end up buying all of her books. It's true. I will. I'll spend all my money and live off canned peas and spam for the rest of my life. But I will have to own every single thing she's ever written. Of course, I already own a hefty amount, but still! :P

This book has everything. An amazing storyline, hilarious characters, witty dialogue with all sorts of references to pop culture, an amazing dose of romance, and a magnificent cliff-hanger ending that makes you extremely thankful you bought book three ahead of time. A must-read for EVERYONE.

This is a wonderful continuation of the Airhead series. Stark Enterprises is starting to look even sketchier with what Em finds out about the Nikki situation in this book!

What I most enjoy out of Cabot books are the characters. She has a flair for creating interesting, complex characters and turning stereotypes around. I love that she has female characters who are into makeup and fashion who are also smart, capable, and brave. It’s fun to see characters who view feminine stuff negatively have to re-examine their opinions when they’re faced with people who love makeup and boots and are smart.

We get to see more of Nikki’s family in this book, which I really enjoyed; it was nice to see her through her brother’s eyes and be able to get more information on what exactly was happening when the TV fell on Em. Along with that, it’s great that Em is becoming more and more confused about how she should approach her life; her feelings for her family and people from her previous life are becoming confused, especially since she’s wondering if she’s putting them in danger by continuing to hang onto them. It’s an interesting dilemma that she has to go through.

This is a typical middle book where mostly things are being set up for the finale; while sometimes middle books can drag, Cabot does a great job at revealing some intriguing twists and hinting at future reveals. This book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, so you probably want the third book ready for when you finish.

Being Nikki is the sequel to Airhead, which I really enjoyed. The sequel brought in new characters and a deeper plot that added to the initial story. Being Nikki was a good and quick read, and I'll be reading the final book in the series, Runaway, soon!

In Book One ( Airhead (Airhead #1) ), all-around reject and class geek Em Watts died in a freak accident. But her brain was still functioning. And said brain was transplanted into the body of teen supermodel Nikki Howards’ body (who was also present at the time of the accident). Nikki Howards was the brand ambassador and *Face* of Stark Enterprises; the company which conveniently enough, conducted the brain-transplant operation.

Now in Book Two, Em is well and truly entrenched in a supermodel’s Size Zero body . Life is a dizzying whirl of killer heels, designer togs, amorous boyfriends popping out of the woodwork and fashion-shows where she might have to prance about in nothing more than the bare essential bits o' clothing. And while her brain may belong to a hoodie-wearing brainiac, her body and it’s reactions are(unfortunately and promiscuously) all Nikki.

While she has been forced to keep mum on the whole brain-transplant operation, she uncovers a few mysteries that threaten to burst upon secrets, whether Stark wants them to or not. Suddenly she discovers an elder brother, a missing mother and a revamped Christopher( the unrequited love of Em's life) who seems have gone from mild schoolboy to super-villian intent on avenging Em’s untimely death.

Meg Cabot’s sequel is fun, well-paced and quite the page turner. I read this book on the same day that I watched Inception…so what with the sub-conscious invasions to the brain transplants, you can just imagine the crazy, Burtonesque dreams that I had last night!

Second book in the series was better than the first. However, this series really ticks me off because what she really did was write one big story and is cutting it up into three books, and you end in a cliff hanger.... to be continued. It should have just been one big book and be done with it. As it is, she ticks me off where she leaves the story hanging... I've never read another series that left you hanging between books as badly as this one. I SERIOUSLY recommend you only read these books after you have all of them in front of you all at once as it reads as one long story. As this one is a new release (library's copy)... who knows how long I have to wait to see how it ends. Not the way to keep your readers happy. You should leave them happily wanting more, not ticked off wondering how it ends.

Next and hopefully last book in the series will be "Runaway". (First was "Airhead".)

EDITED: I'm downgrading my 2 star review down to 1 because this series still ticks me off and I've absolutely no desire to read the final and third part of this series. Considering each book ends with a cliffhanger, it's pretty bad when you don't give a d*** how the series ends. This is probably the worst series Meg Cabot has ever written. It's that bad.

Being Nikki, the sequel to Airhead was definetely an interesting book. It took me out of my normal drama-love-story zone. I liked it because of all the drama and emotions throughout the book. I really loved how Meg Cabot, the author, described every detail that happened. Especially how the author thoroughly described the relationships and Nikki's personal view of the relationship. I could not put this book down once I started a new chapter. I disliked how short the book was. This book built up alot of suspense. I personally do not like suspense. I'd rather just let everything just spill out. Fortunately, it keeps the readers on their seat. My biggest dislike is how there was hardly a climax. I expected something amazing or horrific or both to occur. I kept waiting to see if any new moods were presented but there wasn't any. The events were mainly at the same intensity level. I was very surprised how the book gave a brief summary of the prequel, Airhead. It was a drag to read about since I had already read Airhead, but I was surprised that Meg Cabot added a summary in there. If I had not read Airhead I would've been very confused on what was happening. Like I said, it was a drag to read the summary but to somebody who hadn't read Airhead it would have been very helpful.

I am giving up on Meg Cabot for a while after this one. By the end of this book I was so frustrated by the heroine. She is constantly repeating her self as though the reader has already forgotten what was going on ten pages ago. I also do not enjoy books in which it seems that the characters are not acting very smart. I don't want to constantly be thinking, "Come on, figure it out and lets move on." Clever foreshadowing doesn't bother me but the "clever" part is definitely missing in Being Nikki. It is sad because the plot really interests me, but in this addition to the series, storyline was not enough to help me overlook its other shortcomings.

Alright, so our little Em has learned more about Nikki's family. As in, she's learned that she has one. And they lead her on an all out manhunt for her mother, who has mysteriously disappeared. Frida causes more problems than ever for Em. Gabriel writes a song about his love for Nikki, Lulu has a massive crush on Nikki's newly discovered brother, and both Christopher and Brandon need Nikki for something.

What a cliffhanger, though! Nikki struggles to make sense of her new life. And struggles with not having her old life still. But the ending is full of twists and turns that no one can see coming!

Every time I found myself getting frustrated with this book I had to remind myself that it was written for teenagers, from a teenage perspective. But that didn't always help. Em is so annoying in this one as a narrator, constantly repeating things to us about her situation, they boys in her life and about her modelling career. The villain(s) feel a little unrealistic and not because I don't believe that billionaire ceos can't be *that* bad, but because they're written in such an underdeveloped way. The intrigue is there though towards the end and some of the later revelations are interesting. One more book to go.

Ok ish

I think I am still in The Princess Diaries stupor. I wish Em is as dumb and as funny as Mia. But well ok it wasn't bad. The whole story now take on more a mysterious turn as we found out someone been sending email to Justin in Nikki's name and Nikki's brother Steven appear which further complicate matters and turn out the accident isn't really what it seems.

And now Brandon Stark come to play. I wonder how they all gonna get out of this standing against the big enemy which is the whole Stark Corporation

This one felt as if it was almost an add on to the first book. But it is still a MUST read if you enjoyed Airhead. Sorry it took me so long to write this review. I have been reading too many books for me to write only one review a day now, so that is why this one is so short.

PARENT NOTE: When but other than that, nothing else except the whole concept of the brain being put into another's body. It also has a party in this one where Em's sister is told that a drink is punch but it has alcohol in it and she gets drunk.

CLEAN: Yes, if you are okay with what is in the PARENT NOTE above.

LANGUAGE: If you are looking for something with little or no language this isn't your book.

VIOLENCE: None.
