Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Geography
Points of interest related to Geography on Wikipedia: Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Cleanup – Stubs – Assessment – To-do |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Geography. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Geography|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Geography. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Unsourced stub about a minor Italian river. Sources seem to exist either as trivial mentions or database entries with name and coordinates, as described as failing wp:NATFEAT. I can maybe see a merge into Reno (river), but that article is also essentially unreferenced. Lenny Marks (talk) 20:57, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
Note: I have also nominated the following article: Limentra orientale (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) as a bundled nomination, as it is was creted by the same Wikipedian and is essentially in the same exact circumstances as this article, but is about a different tributary of the same river. - at this point, delete User is going through and using some hidden source to make a bunch of unverifiable stubs. It's bad enough when a known-to-be-unreliable source is used, but we have no idea here and the onus shouldn't be on us to figure out what source was used. Settlements are so thick on the ground in this region that GMaps is useless, notwithstanding the language issue. Mangoe (talk) 10:35, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Mangoe: Yes it's a stub, but hidden source and unverifiable? The first sentence of the cited Daily Sun article says (admittedly using a transliteration without the "c"): "... Alokdia village in Kalidah union of Feni Sadar Upazila ...". That supports the entire body of the stub. The infobox contains coordinates, which are not in the newspaper article, but Google Maps show them to be in the middle of a pair of built-up area blobs bounded by Alockdia Mastar Para Link Rd and Alockdia Rd, surrounded by Alokdia Bitun Nur Jame Masjid, Alockdia Kazi Bari Jameh Masjid, Alockdia Baitul Aman Jame Masjid, and Alockdia Kendrio Jame Masjid, Alockdia Forkania Moktob, Alockdia Pharma and Departmental store, and Mannan bhuiyan Market, Alockdia (or Alockdia Sporting Club, according to the sign), so calling the map "useless" rings false. The 2011 Bangladeshi census confirms that Alokdia is a village in the stated union, upazila, and district, and says its population at that time was 2,769. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:45, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- comment One can debate whether WP:5P1's "Wikipedia combines many features of ... and gazetteers" and WP:GEOLAND's "presumed to be notable" mean that verifiable, legally recognized villages should be kept, which WP:PLACEOUTCOMES says they typically are, but the rationales for deletion given so far are unconvincing. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:50, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

- Comment As I understand WP:NGEO as Legally recognized settlements are considered notable. This seems to be a recognized village.Vinegarymass911 (talk) 12:10, 19 September 2024 (UTC)
- at this point, delete It may be a village, it may be a neighborhood; who knows? User is going through and using some hidden source to make a bunch of unverifiable stubs. It's bad enough when a known-to-be-unreliable source is used, but we have no idea here and the onus shouldn't be on us to figure out what source was used. Mangoe (talk) 10:32, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Mangoe: "Who knows?" Well, the original cited source says Bhattapara (admittedly a different transliteration) is a village. So does the source Vinegarymass911 added. Moreover, the 2011 Bangladeshi census says Bhat Para (yes, a third transliteration - welcome to the inconvenient world of Bengali names) is a village in Madhnagar Union of what was then Natore Sadar Upazila (since 2013 in Naldanga Upazila) with a population of 595. The coordinates make sense, smack in the middle of a built-up blob in Google Maps, next to Bhattopara Primary School (transliteration #4) and down the street from Bhattapara Central Mosque. They're within 1 second in each direction of the coordinates for the Bhattapara in Rajshahi Division in the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's Geographic Names Server. So there's little question that it's a village, a legally recognized populated place. --Worldbruce (talk) 16:47, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- comment I don't believe these trivial "xxx is a village" articles are a net benefit to the encyclopedia. People often say we should keep them because Wikipedia is, among other things, a gazetteer. Gazetteers, however, are mostly a list of one-sentence descriptions, they don't have a separate page or article about every entry. There are about 1,500 villages in Natore District. Fortunately there are not (yet) articles for many of them in Wikipedia. Is there any appetite for merging/redirecting this and other Category:Villages in Natore District into a new "List of villages in Natore District" article that would serve the purpose of a gazetteer without creating thousands of stubs? --Worldbruce (talk) 17:38, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

This article's history contains slow-moving reversals of redirects by an anonymous editor. The text is copied word-by-word from the Howland Island, lacking context here and thus creating a WP:CFORK much worse than the original (note the "on the island" in the very first sentence without identification of the island). The anonymous comment match the actions in maturity ("Mommy I want to do color flags please?", [4]). IMHO the article should be replaced by a Redirect to Howland Island. WP:PROD was reverted by an anonymous editor, so escalating to establish consensus so repeated rollbacks will become legit. Викидим (talk) 02:02, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

Another rail point that apparently someone hoped would become a town, but "platted" does not inevitably lead to "constructed", and there's no sign there was ever anything other than station that apparently held the first post office. McCoy is a common name so lots of false hits, exacerbated by a "Lake McCoy" to the northeast, which of late seems to have been the subject of local political problems which paywalls unfortunately block my knowledge of. - (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
This is a bit of a puzzle, because the sources are contradictory as to whether this and Letts are the same place or not. The history of the county which is referred to by both articles, for example, says "As the Letts Corner State Bank has played an important part in the life of our subject, it may be of interest to note a few facts regarding this well known business institution," but the very next sentence begins, " The Letts State Bank was organized by Leroy A. Eckhart[.]" There's mention of a high school which is referred to various as the Letts high school and the Letts Corner high school— unless they are two institutions, which seems quite unlikely considering their proximity. The railroad station was always in Letts; the supposed location of Letts Corner shows no rail service. My inclination is to treat them as a single place but if someone can find something that clears this up otherwise that would be a big help. Mangoe (talk) 22:14, 11 September 2024 (UTC)

- Comment - Decatur County: Interim Report, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, 1999. p. 85 writes "The village of Letts was laid out in September of 1882 by Joab Stout and others . It is situated in an area of rich farm land , and has therefore been a center for grain exportation . In 1868 Allen W. Letts built a store on what is now SR 3. The settlement that sprang up around this store was known as Lett's Corner . [...] After the completion of the Vernon , Greensburg & Rushville Railroad to the east of Letts Corner in 1880, the village grew in the direction of the tracks and was renamed simply Letts ." So arguably the two articles should be merged. --Soman (talk) 23:16, 18 September 2024 (UTC)
