Engraving of barrow types from Colt Hoare's "The Ancient History of Wiltshire"

Currently the article says bowl barrows were 'first identified by John Thurnam.' He was born in 1810, yet in Richard Colt Hoare's 1812 book "The Ancient History of Wiltshire" he describes and illustrates bowl barrows. Page 21 in the introduction reads "BOWL BARROW This is, I think, the most ordinary shaped barrow, and more frequently met with than any of the others. On Mendip Hills in Somersetshire they abound; they have a very slight ditch round them in some places, but in others none at all." link The accompanying engraving is shown in the thumbnail on the right...

So I'd contend that Colt Hoare was the first to identify bowl barrows using the name 'bowl barrow'. JimChampion (talk) 09:11, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
