Happy New Year, fellow readers!

I'm excited for the upcoming year. With a full year of teaching under my belt now I don't constantly fill like I'm drowning (only in papers to grades). Also I only have ONE class left before my Master's is complete and then I have that weight off my mind.

So as I said last year, I read lots and lots of young adult novels because I teach middle school English and work in the children's department at Barnes & Noble - and because they're fun and entertaining. But I've been feeling a little bogged down in them lately and hope that this year I can get back to my love of romance novels and adult scifi fantasy with a bit of mystery and non-fiction thrown in.

I hope to also spend a bit more time poking around here. I was an active member of lots of groups and threads a few years ago before grad school and teaching started sucking up all of my time. No longer sitting in a cubicle in front of my computer all day has really cut back on my chatting! But I hope to strike up some new reading friendships and renew some old ones. So if you see something interesting here or have a question or great recommendation, feel free to comment and I'll try to do the same!

I'll also try to be better about writing reviews this year. Sometimes I get to it and sometimes I don't. :-(

So here's to a new year of books! Cheers!

1. Squire - Tamora Pierce

First book of the year is a reread. Every year I reread my favorite series of books by Tamora Pierce. Not only are they like visiting old friends during the holiday season, but they're so familiar I zip right through them and they help to bolster my numbers at the end of the year. ;-p

Second book is a reread too, just to finish this quartet. Think I'll take a break from Tamora for a bit now and go read something new.

Hi Ilithyia,

Good luck with your challenge. I know what you mean about having your time sucked up as last year I was teaching and completing my masters too. But this year I am not only not teaching but my masters is also finished (phew!).

Hopefully we'll both finish the challenge!

10. I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas - Lewis Black

I've been reading this one in snippets during my breaks at the bookstore. A completely irreverent and yet hysterically thought-provoking of a cynical, crotchety, vulgar, portrayal of Black's experience being Jewish - and himself - during the Christmas season.

The best feature about this little volume is the front cover! Take a peek.

I enjoyed that book. Didn't realize it was considered a Young Adult book.

18Ilithyia
Jan 22, 2011, 11:11 pm

Which? Three Cups of Tea? There's an adult version, a young reader's edition, and a picture book version of it. It's a story that reaches all audiences!
The one I read was the young reader's edition because I teach it to middle school students.

I haven't read the adult version. I'd like to read it some day though and see what extra time of information it contains.

17. The Spell of the Highlander - Karen Marie Moning

Finished before bed last night. Now I'm ready to start with the Fever books! I'm glad I did this reading of her Highlander series first because not only were they wonderful (again), but the Faery Queen is obviously playing a very complicated game of chess with her Druids that I think may play into the final volume - Shadowfever.

18. Light Weaver (The Spectrum Chronicles) - Thomas Locke

I remember loving these books when I was in middle school so I thought I'd give them another go. I forgot about all the religious overtones in the first one and how preachy it give - even if the message is not bad (about love and light, etc.). I think they other three have more of a science fiction/love story bent and less of the religion. But they're all short - less than 200 pages - so it's not too much of a waste of time one way or another.

20. Path Finder (The Spectrum Chronicles) - Thomas Locke

These books are such a breeze to read (less than 200 pages a piece) that I almost feel bad counting them! Of course, some of my book are over the 300-400 page norm so I suppose... I can live with it.

25. Wolf at the Door - Christine Warren

This is the beginning of a new series, although I read this one a few years ago I haven't read any of the many sequels, and I look forward to seeing how this paranormal world is constructed and unfolds.

Here's the review that I wrote last time and my feelings haven't changed about it. I still think this will be a very worthwhile series to invest my reading time in.

As the first book in a new paranormal series, Warren is off to a running start. A Novel of the Others, Wolf at the Door is the “tail” of Sullivan Quinn and Cassidy Berry. Quinn, coming from a long line of Irishman werewolf ambassadors, comes to the States as a delegate from the European Council of Others to the American Council to advocate that it is time for the Others to announce themselves to the humans of the world and try to coexist peacefully and truthfully. Cassidy is a Foxwoman, an anthropologist who - although being from a long and illustrious line of diplomats herself - has no interest in politics, but - based on her expertise - is vehemently against the idea of unveiling themselves to the world. Throw in a religious fanatical group bent on the complete exposition and destruction of all Others, several kidnappings, a domineering and opinionated old fox (literally) of a grandmother, and some steamy love scenes to make this a good start to, what looks to be, a great new series.

I enjoyed this romance for it’s very witty quips and dialogue, the interesting characters, and because it opens up a world that Warren could write about for some time. The romance was pretty easy with few obstacles - but lots of sex, as Warren spent more time on the overall plot than on the two getting together. Which is often nice, because even I get bored from time to time with a romance novel just being the constant misunderstandings between the couple keeping them apart and the easy resolution at the end that could have been found in the beginning. Not to mention, that this was an introduction novel, and she had to spend some time establishing the new world

That is not to say that I haven’t read better paranormal romance, but you can’t only read the “best book ever” or you would shortly run out of things to read. I think Warren has a lot of potential and I look fowarding to reading her next one, She’s No Faerie Princess. I hope at some point she’ll write a backstory about how werejaguar Felix (that’s like a werewolf Alpha) Rafael de Santos met his witchy (again, literally) wife Tess!

Oh, and I have to share my favorite line from this book you - well, at least my favorite PG one.
Quinn to Cassidy - “I need you to understand what you do to me. You go to my head like whiskey, and I’m asking you nicely to please let me have another sip.” Boy, would I have liked to hear that in his sweet Irish brogue. *sigh*

26. She's No Faerie Princess - Christine Warren

Finished late last night before sleepy time...

Fiona really is an immortal Faerie princess, and when she takes a vacation from her Aunt Mab’s court into New York City, she finds herself being stalked by a demon. Fortunately, Tobias Walker, a werewolf and Head of Security to the Alpha, comes to her rescue. As they grudgingly work together to discover why Fiona is unable to return home, why a demon (the enemy of the Fae and supposedly trapped in the Below) is running around New York, and what the King of the Unseelie Court has to do with it, the wolf and the princess realize that eternity looks pretty bleak when spent alone.

I’m definitely enjoying Warren’s Others series. She has incredibly well-fleshed out reoccurring characters, some of who are already married not just conveniently single friends to be the leads in other books. Her plots are also very believable (at least in a paranormal sense), especially when dealing with the politics of the supernatural world revealing itself to the human one. In other words, it is possible to enjoy this series on many levels.

I can't remember the last time I read a book twice in one year, let alone in a month. But it was so epically amazing that I had to experience it again! After reading all 11 books prior to it again and with Moning astounding storytelling techniques, it was like reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It had so many twists and such a satisfying ending. I'm sure I'll be reading this one again and again.
