About the Author

Chogyam Trungpa (February 29, 1939 -- April 4, 1987) was one of the most visibly active of the Tibetan Buddhist refugees to come to the West and to lay the foundation in Europe and North America for the study of the Tibetan traditions. Born the son of a farmer and considered the eleventh show more incarnation of Trungpa Tulku, he was given a traditional training in religious philosophy but in his teens had to be hidden from the invading Chinese. Fleeing in 1959 when the Communists invaded Tibet, he ultimately moved to Great Britain, where he studied comparative religion at Oxford University and established a Tibetan meditation center in Scotland. He moved to the United States in 1970 and established the Buddhist university, Naropa, in Colorado. Naropa became the center for seminars, many of which he cotaught with prominent American artists, scholars, and scientists. Among his contributions are the translation of numerous Tibetan texts. On September 28, 1986, he suffered cardiac arrest, requiring intensive care at the hospital, then at his home and finally, in mid-March 1987, back at the hospital, where he died on April 4, 1987. In the summer of 1967 the Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre was established under the direction of the Venerable Trungpa Rinpoche. Since then he has given a number of Talks on various aspects of the fundamental teachings of Buddhism, and many of these talks were recorded on tape. The book is a selection from those talks, which are, we consider, of great value to those who are interested in the path of meditation, being written with clarity, simplicity and a depth of understanding which can be felt throughout. Everyone who reads this book, whether they have but recently become interested in such matters, or have spent many years trying to follow the path, will find here much that is of great help. The design on the cover is based on one of the seals of the Trungpa Tulkus. It is te Sanskrit word 'Ehvam,' meaning 'Thus' and is used at the beginning of all Sutras 'Thus I have heard,' At another level 'Eh' represents the passive, and 'Vam' the active, force in the Universe. At a still deeper level 'Eh' represents Emptiness, and 'Vam,' the Clear Light. This book was suggested to me as a different way of looking at the warrior. Many friends had encouraged me to embrace my warrior side but I associated the word "warrior" with violence. In this book Trungpa describes the type of warrior that could (and does) change the world through non-violence. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to be a peaceful warrior.
