Three weeks into her new position as priest at St. Alban's Episcopal parish in Millers Kill, NY, Clare Fergusson finds a new born baby on the church doorstep. At the hospital Clare meets Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne, also ex-Army as she is. Clare stays involved because the Burns couple in her parish want to foster then adopt the baby. But it turns out more members are connected to the situation and Clare keeps asking questions. Russ and Clare both have issues from their pasts and Russ has a rocky marriage. Clare does a number of reckless actions and makes bad decisions at times. Russ doesn't seem to have a consistent logical focus for fact finding. Plot was drawn out to keep the convoluted plot progressing but I liked the descriptions of the area and some of the side characters, so will probably give the next volume a try.… (more)

Julia Spencer Fleming writes addictive books. I have not been reading them in order but reading them as I find them. I Shall Not Want puts us through approach avoidance romance of Revered Claire Ferguson and Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne.

A new character, Hadley Knox, a single mother with two children joins the police force for the higher pay and health benefits beat waitressing or bartending hands down. All she wants is to be able to feed, clothe and house her children, she is not interested in starting a relationship. A handsome but naive and much younger police office is in puppy love over Hadley.

A corpse is found by Russ' sister, she and her husband were hiring migrant works to milk and take care of their recently expanded dairy business. They are on a very thin budget and want to use cheap labor.

Mixed into this story, is gang that runs drugs in New York.

Claire shows her quick thinking and ingenuity in a violent scenes. I need to read more of the series, I am really hooked!!!
