A detailed biography of one of the major players in the Great Game of 19th century geopolitics. Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran ... the roots of today's global flashpoints were all traveled and annotated by Burton. A very complicated man, with an amazing life. The writing did bog down at times with too much detail and speculation, but overall a good survey of what by all rights should have been an impossible life.
