Short biography
Her name was a pseudonym and her true identity is unknown. Although she was a bestselling author with her multi-volume first novel, Cicely; or the Rose of Raby: An Historical Novel (1795), Agnes Musgrave's life is a cipher. She was probably born late in the 18th century. She went on to publish another two books with the Minerva Press: Edmund of the Forest, An Historical Novel (1797) and The Solemn Injunction (1798). In 1801, she published The Confession, and her final novel, William de Montfort; or the Sicilian Heiresses appeared in 1808. It's possible that she belonged to the gentry class of society, as in the introduction to Cicely she talks of connections between her family and the nobility.

While there are some great gothic parts, it is, at times, a bit too solemn of an injunction. The non-gothic parts sometimes get a bit bogged down in an overly complex plot, some dull writing, and the 4th volume crams a lot of action and exposition in, not all of which is that interesting. I started to feel like I needed a family tree to keep track of all the people involved. Shades of Anne Rice and her Mayfair Witches.

A on the spooky parts though. They're quite well written and effectively creepy!

Format note: If you get this from Chawton House, it's a bit hard to read on a Kindle. It's all single spaced, which is not the best viewing. It's a 4 volume novel squished into 371 pages.
