Lynne Cox, International Swimming Hall of Fame inductee, writes a moving memoir of an adventure she had while swimming at 17. Nearing the end of a 3 hour practice swim off Seal Beach, CA, she is suddenly joined by a baby gray whale. As he plays along side her she begins to worry. Since baby grays live on mother's milk for the first 8 months of their lives it is important that she be reunited with her mother soon. The whale also keeps following her so she cannot leave the water or he will beach. A man on the pier and the Coast Guard put the word out to look for a lone female whale and to be aware of a girl swimming with a baby whale. The story covers more than an hours swimming out into deeper water, encounters with dolphin, watching diving pelicans and much introspection on nature and sea life. Nice little story.… (more)

I loved this book. This is an excellent true story of a young girl and her experiences and efforts to help a lost baby whale. I was hooked from the first page and enthralled with the experience and visions described.

There is so much to be learned even from a wildlife perspective, the author takes us along as she begins with her morning swim and the fulfilling morning unfolds in a natural way, in keeping with her habits of training to be physically and mentally fit.

I was impressed with her maturity, amazingly at the young age of 17, and the discipline and initiative to excel at accomplishing more thru her efforts than the average youth of her age.

She pushes herself past normal human limits to solve the mystery of the small whale with so many efforts to save her newly found friend friend, or as she named him Grayson (the grey’s whales son).

It felt like I was there swimming right there beside them thru out the book because the descriptions were so good!

I usually don’t read non-fiction, but this one was recommended to me and I would 100 percent recommend this book for people of any age!

Gripping read about a woman who does long distance swimming in the world's coldest waters. You'll feel cold reading it (making it the perfect summer read!) and awed by the willpower Lynne Cox demonstrates. If you've ever participated in an endurance sport, you must read this book.
