ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - The United States Army is celebrating 249 years of service for the country as one of the oldest American institutions.

The 249th birthday commemorates “Honoring the Past and Defending the Future”, according to the Army, and honors those soldiers who serve their county, or parish, in times of war and peace as the Army celebrates its local communities for steadfast support.

Alexandria Mayor Jacques Roy delivered a proclamation honoring June 13 as “U.S. Army Day” in the city.

The Army’s birthday honors the men and women who served before, according to Sergeant 1st Class Grafton Spinks:

Spinks said continuing the strength of improving our country is the focus for the next 249 years.

The Army is one of the oldest American institutions, born June 14, 1775, after its establishment by the Continental Congress, and is one-year older than the Declaration of Independence and 13 years older than the U.S. Constitution.
