Andreas Peter Hofleitner was born in Wiesen, Austria in 1985. On July 4th, 1999 he left his country of birth with his parents and moved to the United States of America, eventually settling in Annapolis, Maryland.

In 2010 he graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy. The following six years he deployed three times in support of counter-terrorism operations across the globe. In 2012, on his very first deployment, his grandfather, Erich Hofleitner, passed away in Austria. Andreas would not learn of his passing until months later when he returned home from his deployment.

The only parts that were missing was what people might have thought and felt. Those parts slowly grew as my editor, Paige Gasser, kept making notes next to sections such as: "How did this character feel during this? What where they thinking." - In that sense, the first version was a skeleton of just all things my grandfather heard and saw and I slowly filled in the blanks that he didn't address in the memoirs he left behind. Probably because it take me longer to formulate thoughts and reflect on myself than other people. - This book brought closure to losing my grandfather, who left our family very suddenly and unexpectedly.
