it was amazing

You might say this is Lara’s story of one summer in her early twenties when she played summer stock and was in love with an actor who later becomes a famous movie star. You might say it’s her three daughters’ stories who are home to help pick cherries on the family farm, since the workers can’t come during the pandemic. It’s not, though a story about the pandemic, for which I was thankful. It’s a story of family, of relationships, a story of the past and present and perhaps where the future will take these young women . About the future, perhaps because Lara’s story is really about realizing the only life she ever really wanted and that’s the story she tells them. The daughters beg Lara to tell them about that summer and they hang on her every word telling of the actor and then how Lara later fell in love with their father, who by the way stole my heart . I also hung on her every word and every word that Patchett wrote. I very much appreciated that the reader becomes privy to a few parts of the story that she doesn’t tell her daughters choosing to keep some things to herself and of course the reader . The writing is flawless , moving seamlessly back and forth between past and present even within chapters .

To say that I was excited that Ann Patchett had a new novel is an understatement. To say that I was thrilled to be fortunate to get an advanced copy of it is a huge understatement. I fell in love with her writing from the first book of hers that I read, Bel Canto. Since then I’ve read all of her novels and a book of her essays These Precious Days: Essays. She’s a versatile writer and I’m never disappointed no matter what the novel is about because she just has such a talent for creating relatable characters and relationships. This novel is just one more reason why I’ll read anything she writes. I loved everything about it.

I received a copy of this book from HarperCollins through Edelweiss.

Melissa Crytzer Fry Fabulous review, Angela! I always think authors must be so tickled to know that, once they've hooked a reader on a particular book, some of those readers go back and read all the others. I've only read two of hers -- Patron Saint of Liars and Magician's Assistant. I have Bel Canto and Dutch House waiting. Would you say this is your favorite of hers? From everything I've read about her, she just sounds like an incredible, down-to-earth, and generous woman. I would LOVE to go to her bookstore someday!

Melissa, thanks so much. I knew I wanted to read everything she wrote when I finished Bel Canto, my first by Patchett. I read it not long after it was published, over 20 years ago. I would have to say that is my favorite because after all those years I still remember the characters. I also recommend State of Wonder. Her book of essays These Precious Days: Essays will reinforce all of the wonderful things you’ve read about her.

Angela M is taking a break. Sorry , Melissa:) !

Anne Just finished this wonderful book! Knowing that a familiarity with “Our Town” might be helpful, I watched a video version on Prime Video early on in the process. (It has been a favorite of mine since reading it in high school.) I am glad that I did. You can get by without it, but you’d be missing out on a lot if you do. And Meryl Streep… 🙌…words fail me. She truly brings the central character (Lara) to life! I’d love to have Lara as a friend. Streep makes her feel really relatable. Don’t miss it.

Angela M is taking a break. Glad you loved it, too, Anne. Even though I read it, I will definitely be listening to the audio.

Cherryll Sevy I loved this rich, glorious novel about family, relationships, and love over time. Weaving the dialog as Lara shares her past with her daughters, with the events of the past and present was beautifully written. I loved the characters, especially Lara.
I will definitely listen to the audio. And watch Our Town again.
Ann Patchett is a literary treasure. I’ve read several of her books so far. Will go back and read more.

Angela M is taking a break. Cherryll, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I couldn’t agree more . Patchett is one of my favorite writers.

Lesley Moseley I am about 3 hours in. Narrated by Meryl Streep. I feel like I am lying in the grass under the cherry trees, also listening to the mother tell her three daughters about her early life.. LOVING it...

Tundra Yes it’s a beautiful story and I’m moving to a cherry orchard … only in summer and just to lie underneath the trees and read and eat cherries 🍒😁

Kriste Honestly, this was DNF for me, even that I listened the book made by Meryl Streep. The only good things is her voice, the story bored me badly.
Happy it worked for you

Angela M is taking a break. Kriste, sorry you were bored with it . Not all books are for everyone.

Nancy S Her book of essays called “This is the Story of a Happy Marriage” is even better than These Precious Days. I have made it a point to own all of Patchett’s books and her essays are actually my favorites.

Angela M is taking a break. Nancy , I just recently read This is the Story of a Happy Marriage. I definitely enjoyed it, but I did like These Precious Days more:)

Carolyn Terrific review Angela. Just read this and loved it too!
