it was amazing
bookshelves: edelweiss-reviews, 2023-favorites

You might say this is Lara’s story of one summer in her early twenties when she played summer stock and was in love with an actor who later becomes a famous movie star. You might say it’s her three daughters’ stories who are home to help pick cherries on the family farm, since the workers can’t come during the pandemic. It’s not, though a story about the pandemic, for which I was thankful. It’s a story of family, of relationships, a story of the past and present and perhaps where the future will take these young women . About the future, perhaps because Lara’s story is really about realizing the only life she ever really wanted and that’s the story she tells them. The daughters beg Lara to tell them about that summer and they hang on her every word telling of the actor and then how Lara later fell in love with their father, who by the way stole my heart . I also hung on her every word and every word that Patchett wrote. I very much appreciated that the reader becomes privy to a few parts of the story that she doesn’t tell her daughters choosing to keep some things to herself and of course the reader . The writing is flawless , moving seamlessly back and forth between past and present even within chapters .

To say that I was excited that Ann Patchett had a new novel is an understatement. To say that I was thrilled to be fortunate to get an advanced copy of it is a huge understatement. I fell in love with her writing from the first book of hers that I read, Bel Canto. Since then I’ve read all of her novels and a book of her essays These Precious Days: Essays. She’s a versatile writer and I’m never disappointed no matter what the novel is about because she just has such a talent for creating relatable characters and relationships. This novel is just one more reason why I’ll read anything she writes. I loved everything about it.

I received a copy of this book from HarperCollins through Edelweiss.

Christine Well, this is a really compelling review, Angela. Dare I say I haven’t read anything from this author yet?

Cathrine ☯️ You have me 🤤

Angela M is taking a break. Jodi , it’s just a really good family story and Patchett knows how to write families!

Angela M is taking a break. Christine, she’s too good to miss !

Angela M is taking a break. C, I hope you love it when you read it. It’s very early for me to read this even as an advanced copy , since it’s not being published until August. I’m finding that the way out of my reading slump is to read these new releases by favorite writers. Alice Hoffman is up now and Alice McDermott after her.

Lorna Oh lucky you, Miss Angela. This sounds like a wonderful book from one of my favorite authors. It is now on my TBR and I will anxiously await publication. Thank you!

Canadian Jen Such a terrific review, Angela! I just added this one yesterday and will be happy to read it when it comes in.

Mark Porton Great review Angela - Patchett writes about people & familes so well, I looked for this on our Netgalley (in OZ) and it's not there, which is a bummer. But I'm sure I'll read this one day - and yes, nice it's not about COVID!!!

Karen Fab review, Angela! I can’t wait to read this one!

Donna P I am such a huge Ann Patchett fan and just finished this yesterday. I didn’t like it nearly as much as her other books and was left disappointed. I think it was the ending that let me down. I have absolutely loved every one of her books…but I just merely liked this one. ☹️

Angela M is taking a break. Lorna , I hope you love it !

Angela M is taking a break. Jen, thanks very much . Hope you love it, too.

Angela M is taking a break. Mark, thanks so much. Maybe it will be on your NetGalley eventually. I got the Arc from Edelweiss,so I’m not even sure if it’s on NetGalley.

Angela M is taking a break. Karen, thanks. Hope you love it. A great family story.

Angela M is taking a break. Donna, sorry it didn’t work for you. I actually liked the ending , but they all can’t work for all of us.

Barbara My history with Ann Patchett matches yours almost exactly, Angela. I also began with Bel Canto and have read most of her books with the exclusion of Patron Saint of Liars. I hope to read it soon. I encourage you to read These Precious Days. I finished that and felt she was my best
friend. I am very excited to see she has a new book. Lucky you to get an advanced copy. So glad to see the 5 stars on your fine review.

Angela M is taking a break. Barbara, I have read These Precious Days and I loved it . It made me think she’s not just an amazing writer, but an amazing human being.

Carmel Hanes You keep talking me into new books to add....I guess there could be worse things. I've enjoyed the Patchetts I've read. Terrific review, A.

Bianca Beautiful review, Angela. I'll go beg for it. :-)

Angela M is taking a break. Carmel, definitely could be worse things. Patchett is a treasure !

Lisa, yes, I am lucky because I love her writing and storytelling. I’m finding that a way to move out of my reading slump is to read my favorite writers.

Tundra It is always the best feeling when a book and author live up to your expectation. How she manages to be consistently so good is amazing. Now I will wait very impatiently to get hold of this one 😁. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful review Angela.

Angela M is taking a break. Elyse, thanks so much . It’s just great story telling that we’ve come to expect from Patchett . She’s such a treasure.

Ruben Great review, I must read this one.

Cheri I was so hoping to get a copy of this one, but don't have one - yet. I am not surprised that you loved this, Angela, and it really shows in your lovely review how much that you loved this!

Julie G Yours is the first review I've seen for this new novel, Angela. It's inspiring!

Angela M is taking a break. Ruben , thanks so much. Hope you enjoy it .

Angela M is taking a break. Cheri, I hope you get a copy . It’s just a great family story .

Angela M is taking a break. Julie, thanks very much. It’s really a bit early to review even for an advanced copy , for me, anyway. But I’ve been in a real slump for a number of months now. I’m finding the way out of it is to read my favorite writers. Patchett is one of them. Consistently good story telling that holds me from beginning to end . Not a lot of action, just a great story and characters to care about.

Cassie I can’t wait to read this one!!

Julie G Angela,
It's thrilling when you find a new work by a beloved author, and so many of my favorites are dead, so I rarely experience such joy!
I loved Bel Canto and I'm looking forward to her essay collection (I actually won a copy!), but boy did she disappoint me with The Dutch House. I am looking forward to a fresh read of hers.

Angela M is taking a break. Julie, her essay collection is just amazing. Nice you won a copy . After I read that I not only admired her as a writer but as a human being . I’ll be interested in what you think of it. Bel Canto is my favorite of hers .

Terrie Robinson (short break) I was curious about this one when I saw it on NG today. Your thoughts about reading it, Angela, is just the push I needed to go back and request it. Thank you!

Angela M is taking a break. Terri, I hope you get a copy and that you enjoy it .

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader So lovely, Angela. Bel Canto was my first by her, too, and I still remember who recommended it (my cousin). It was love at first read. I’m definitely excited for this one.

message 48: by Carol (new) - added it

Carol Angela, Your review is tantalizing, and makes me curious about this author. I haven't read her stories yet.

Debbie Love your review, Angela! The book sounds fabulous! Patchett is one of my favorite authors, too! O’Farrell, Strout, and Patchett—the three greats! I didn’t like Bel Canto, but State of Wonder just blew me away, and pulled me back into reading after a long hiatus. Because it had such a powerful effect, it’s not only on my All-Time Favorites shelf but also on my Blew Me Away shelf!

I didn’t know she had a new book!! Thanks for letting me know. I am chomping at the bit! Of course, I immediately requested it from NG and EW. I doubt I’ll get it though. I didn’t get These Precious Days which meant I had to wait till pub date and then dole out bucks. Damn! Crossing fingers anyway.

Btw, I liked her other book of essays, This is the Story of a Happy Marriage; you might want to check it out. I’m sure you’d love it!

Angela M is taking a break. Jennifer, thanks so much. I hope you love it , too.
