bookshelves: end-of-the-world, netgalley, read-2014

3.5-4 stars.

When I first started reading this book I was so confused I thought I was going to give up. Then my friend Mike came to my rescue explaining that there is a novella to this book up at Tor. http://www.tor.com/stories/2014/05/un.... I really think that part needs added to this book, it's very hard to figure out what's going on without it.

Once I read that I was sucked into this book.
A flu type virus has been transmitted globally. At first it starts flu like, if you survive that the second stage is very much like meningitis, and then the third stage if you make it that far..you are "locked-in". Your mind is fine but your body is totally incapable of movement of any kind. The virus is named Haden after the first lady who contacted the disease.
Speed forward twenty five years or so. Haden's are the virus victims who are "locked-in" their bodies. However, science has progressed and they are able to inhabit a robot type device called threeps.

You have humans that are able to also host the Haden's into their bodies called Integrators.

This book is very innovative and I thought I hated Sci-fi.

The writing in this book was fun and fast paced. The plot was pretty much wrapped up before the end but I still loved each and every second of it. I hope the author does a series because I'll be there grabbing it up.

I recieved an Arc of this book from Netgalley and Tor in exchange for an honest review. Thanks!

Shit: eta.. I'm a so called goodreads bully. Scalzi wrote a post taking up for us. I should give this book a five because I found his post. Frigging yes!

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* I think..maybe not. Please quit confusing me.

Sara Thank you, I just went to get the prequel.

Shae Thank you for posting the prequel. I started listening to the audiobook yesterday, and I was so confused, I came here to see if you guys could offer some clarity and sure enough you did. After reading the Prequel I now know what was going on in the first two chapters I listened to, I can listen to them again with understanding. Thank you so much!

Your welcome :)

Aaron White Thank you, thank you! I was so confused also. The explanation doesn't seem to happen until several chapters in and I was on the verge of giving up.

Your welcome! :) It's not a bad book at all once you figure things out.

Aaron White Ha! I got to the end of the audiobook and there was the novella. I had already gone and read it online, though. I think it's better served upfront than as an epilogue, but at least it was there.

I think it needs to go in the front too.

Jonathan Quit reading your review at the first animated GIF. That's annoying, not funny, almost impossible to read with videos pasted in the middle of a review.

I don't remember asking you to read or comment on my review. Thanks for trolling.

Kristin Thanks! I added it as a comment on mine so I can remember to read that first.

You're welcome not to read reviews with gifs and you're also welcome to keep your troll comments to yourself.

Also-as an author you may want to be nicer to people that could read and review your books...
Just a thought.

Well, it's her review and she can write it in the manner she wishes. If you don't like reviews with gifs move on.

Great review Shelby. I've got this on my tbr list and I'll make sure to read the novella fisrt. :)

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Thanks girls :)

Kelly (and the Book Boar) All of the "supposed writers" who don't like images in reviews need to go make their own damn site. If it's not against Goodreads' TOS, then STFU!

I think he is just pissed because maybe we aren't using gifs to review his sucky books.

Well, he got himself put on my "never list," so that's something to be proud of ; )

Candice That moment when you realize you are such a nerd that while reading a review for a book you want to read you get more excited by a gif used in that review than by the book itself. <---- LONG run on sentence. That being said: CYBERMEN!!!! Doing the Macarena!!! FANTASTIC!

LOL!

Emily The novella reads like World War Z, with its oral history thing. Will read it once I'm finished with the book. Thanks for posting it.

Angie Reddick williamson Thanks for posting the prequel, I was lost and feeling pretty stupid that I could not get the concept.

Becky Patrick I felt the same way when I started the book...I thought I was missing something, but I stuck with it and loved it. Thanks for the link to the novella! It will be nice to get a bit more information on how this whole thing started!

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

That novella - the prequel - is part of the audiobook which is what I listened to. It is "part two" of the audiobook though, it doesn't play first.

message 32: by Levi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Levi May Thanks for the link to the prequel... the beginning of the book absolutely makes more sense now!

Karla Thank you for the unlocked link!!

message 34: by K (new) - added it

K I’m glad I saw this! I just started listening to the audiobook and the novella is added in the end so I stopped a few chapters in to listen to it before going on. Definitely sets the scene more clearly. Also, the novella comes across hella eerie in our post covid world.
