The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1)

This is a wonderfully entertaining new crime debut, which although it contains nothing amazingly original, works really well. Firstly, there is the main character, Cormoran Strike - a wounded war veteran, with a troubled past, damaged love life and financial woes, which see him sleeping in his office when we first meet him. Strike has left the army, which provided him with the structure and home life his mother never could, and set up as a Private Detective. The only problem is, a lack of paying clients. He then receives a new temporary secretary, Robin Ellacott, with her slightly stuffy fiance and her secret desire to be a detective. Both Strike and Robin, are fully fleshed out characters that we care about deeply by the end of the book.
The crime Strike is asked to investigate involves a famous supermodel, who falls (or is pushed) from her balcony on a snowy, London night. Lula Landry is the adopted daughter of a wealthy family and her adopted brother is insistent that she had no suicidal feelings when he met up with her that day. As Strike sets out to investigate, we are introduced to a cast of identifiable characters - the effeminate dress designer, drug taking Paparazzi avoiding boyfriend, disgrunted 'wannabee' film star chauffeur, elderly, dying mother, disapproving family members, etc. Although the plot is really quite a simple one, it works very well. The author has created a totally realistic scenario, with London almost becoming an extra character as Strike walks the streets and a satisfactory plot with a good cast of suspects.
I would say that Cormoran Strike is the best new addition to the P I genre that I have read for a long time. He certainly deserves a series and I hope to see him appear in many more books. There were tantalising glimpses of his past which need much further exploration and perhaps the author can be kinder to him in the next book and, at least, get him a proper place to sleep. I feel he will serve the author well and deserves a little looking after! If you enjoy really intelligent, well written crime novels (P D James, etc) then this will be a book you will love. Great start to what will, hopefully, become a long running series.
* Have just found out this was written by J K Rowling. I am glad I didn't know that when I read it and I hope it doesn't put her off continuing the series, now she has been 'outed' as the author. It is a good read on its own merits.

Thanks for the review. I just downloaded it based on your review. I hope I like it as much as you did.

I got it before all this furore erupted - I thought it was good for a debut, hmmmm. I know you like crime books as much as I do, so I imagine you will enjoy it.
I am disappointed in knowing it was JK Rowling that wrote this before I read it. I have a strong bias towards loving what she writes!
On the other hand, I only added this to my list after seeing Rowling had another book out!
Thanks for your review.

I love crime books and that was why I chose it. I was never a Harry Potter fan and my kids don't like the books/films either. I probably wouldn't have chosen it had I known she was the author, so there you go!
I hope she writes about 20 more! She left so much up in the air with Cormoran. I want to read the book where we find out what happened to his mother, I hope his father gets arrested and Cormoran has to save him! And what happens with his crazy ex! She should be listed in his Iphone under Trouble!
At least a bed! Poor guy. Not exactly sure what a camp bed is, but it does not sound comfortable or large enough for him.
A camp bed is a a lightweight folding canvas frame you can put a sleeping bag on if the ground is wet. As in:

I think it was supposed to be something a soldier would carry - as in lightweight. I've never been camping, so I have no idea what people use - the whole thing sounds horribly uncomfortable to me!
Damn it! Does this mean I have to admit that I'm not Douglas Watkinson but Raymond Chandler. I had hoped to keep it secret a little longer...

I'm guilty of the same, Bobi! :-)

I am sure the book will be released soon, Vishal. The publishers will be keen to rush release it as demand will be so high.
I enjoyed reading a review from "before the revelation" and it pleases me to know we had the same reaction to it. I am pretty sure I gave it an unbiased reading even though I only found it through the big uproar. I absolutely loved Strike and Robin and I'd like to think I'd have loved them no matter who wrote it!
I finished the book, was boring till the half.. simply taking the statements, but then it was pretty awesome. But stil quite long for a detective book i guess.. Anyway i enjoyed at the end ;)
I think the problem with the book is that a lot of people are buying it just on the strength of the author. I love crime fiction and I chose the book before knowing J K Rowling wrote it. I'm not a fan of Harry Potter and my kids didn't like them either, so I read it purely as a crime book, which I thougt was a debut novel. As crime is my fave genre, I enjoyed the novel for what it was. I think it is a really good crime novel and I liked the characters and the plot. I hope for more, but it's possibly a little spoilt now.
I loved this book! And, the best part is that I didn't know it was JK Rawlings until I reached the back cover! If I had known at first, I would have read with a different perspective in mind. Anyhow, I can't wait to start the next book in the series!!
So nice to read a review from the"original" point of view prior to the big reveal! Having just read it, I of course knew who the author was going in. I really enjoyed both main characters and am happy to see that she has added two more books to the series. It felt like an old time gumshoe type book to me which I loved.
Like you I had no idea this was a JKR book. I'm not sure I would have read it if I had known.... However I loved it. More Cormoran and Robin please....
I loved this book so much that i re-read it even if i knew already who done it! Still found it entertaining and enjoyable as the 1st time!
I was a HUGE Harry Potter fan, even though they weren't published until I was an adult. After giving up on The Casual Vacancy because it bored me, I didn't want to bother reading the Cormoran Strike series. Then, on a whim, I started watching the C.B Strike series on television and loved it. While I wait for the next episode to appear, I'm reading the novels and so, far, am enjoying The Cuckoo's Calling. Even though I know who the killer is, I still like spending more time with Cormoran and Robin.
