I really enjoyed the historical aspect of this one, as well as the setting, but didn’t love the characters or the plot - somehow it feels like something is missing. Maybe because this is a standalone and therefore a lot of plot development had to be crammed into one book, but I wasn’t fully convinced by any of the choices the characters made nor by the romance. Also, can we stop with the centuries-old-man-falls-helplessly-in-love-with-teenage-girl trope?

As someone who reads historical books for fun. This book was not at all historically accurate

Thank you for pointing out the idea of "something missing". I felt strangely disconnected to the characters in this book. It was an interesting story and I read it within a day so it kept my attention... but somehow I also didn't care how it ended and I stopped thinking about it as soon as it was over. And yes, ancient dude and young girl gives me the ick in 95% of the stories I read with that trope.

I figured haha, already by the way she called my country 'The Netherlands' even though back then I'm pretty sure it was called the Dutch Republic or some other name, but not the Netherlands.
