Updated with thoughts about the movie at the bottom.

I read somewhere that this book could aptly be summarized as a feminist, socialist riff on "Frankenstein", one of my favorite books, so I was quite eager to read it. In fact, I am amazed it never appeared on my radar before I was suddenly surrounded by trailers for the Yorgos Lanthimos movie adaptation. I guess this is the quiet type of amazing book, that flies just under the pop culture radar until some weirdo with an amazing eye for period pieces decides to make a movie out of it. Now I was in quite a hurry to read it because I wanted to go on a movie date with my bestie - and I much prefer reading the books before seeing the movies.

I am a sucker for a few things when it comes to books, and the whole "book within a book" framing is one, as is the adorable "this is a reproduction of a found manuscript" device. So as soon as I cracked this novel open, I was cackling maniacally.

There are so many wonderful layers to peel back with "Poor Things", starting with Bella, a woman who was resurrected, given her unborn child's brain and stitched back together. But even without trying to see her as a metaphor for anything, she is, first and foremost, a grown woman who is innocent of her society's arbitrary, sexist and oppressive rules. She has a child's candor and enthusiasm for experience and sensations, something neither her creator, Dr. Baxter, or the man who falls in love with her, McCandless, knows how to handle. In fact, no one knows quite what to do with Bella, who is in fact doing nothing more than being her purest self.

I love that while this is a perfectly executed pastiche of Victorian fiction, it never falls into clumsy presentism while discussing very modern ideas. The surrealistic elements, questionable narration and characters that defy stereotype classification make this a really remarkable novel. I am happy that it was made into a movie (can't wait to see it next week!) because that will hopefully bring it back into the spotlight. A little, weird, baroque treasure!

--

I finally went to see the movie, and I am delighted to report that I absolutely loved it! It's stunning, surreal, grotesque and magnificent!

Yes, the sex scenes are rather explicit, as where they are merely hinted at in the book, but I find that they are an important part of Bella's story, and it doesn't feel gratuitous. If anything, they are quite realistic in the sense that sex isn't always pretty.

The movie is gorgeous, but the dialogue is also incredible, as are the performances. Some details were changed, and I think the changes made sense for a smoother page-to-screen adaptation. This movie deserves every award it is nominated for!

Bonnie G. Saw this on Christmas, loved it, and now after reading your review cannot wait to read the book! (Pro tip: Don't see this with your parent or child. I saw it with my son and though we are pretty cool with sexual content, it was .... a lot.)

Thank you for the advice, Bonnie! No worries, though: going to see it with my bestie 😊 I'm really excited about it, it looks like a stunning movie!

BJ I went into the movie totally blind and it was ... not what I expected... three or four times in a row! Fun though, reminded me of Terry Gilliam a little! You make the novel sound even better, though!

I said coming out of the movie that visually it seemed like a Terry Gilliam movie. Glad to hear I was not alone!

"Stunning" is an excellent word choice. I always love Yorgos Lanthimos films, and they always surprise me.

He has a remarkable eye and never chooses simple subject matters, I am so excited to go see it!

Gabriela Interesting. The Frankenstein connection makes me think of Mary Shelley saying she had a dream about reviving her first child by the fire as some inspiration for the novel. Now I am curious for the movie

There is definitely a nod to Shelley, not just because of the resurrection aspect, but also the objective feminist stance the "creature" has, which Shelley would have no doubt approved of :-) Though I think it also winks at James Whale's "Bride".

Corey Great movie. Great book.

Kaeshani Hey, great review! and I also think it's a fair, good adaptation.

SLB Yes, no explicit sex in the book, but her enthusiastic sexuality drives the narrative. So if the movie got that, they got it.

Exactly! The sex in the movie is very faithful to the spirit of what's in the book.

Erietta Efthimerou Amazing review!!! As you say, I always like first reading the books and after seeing the movie. I just finished the movie today and saw the movie today (!) and I loved it!!!! Every scene was portrayed so accurately and with spot on additions! I recommend it to every single person out there!

Thank you Erietta (sorry, I just saw your comment)! The book is amazing and the movie is just fabulous, I've also been telling everyone they need to go see it!

Vladys Kovsky Just watched the movie and absolutely agree with your take Gabrielle! I read the book some 20 years ago and so I forgot a lot. Still remember Lanark though. Have you read that one?

✨ Anna ✨ | ReadAllNight So happy to find your excellent review and comments. I am watching the movie, such a fun and wild ride but more substantive than it looked in the trailers. It's really amazing and I had some of the best belly laughs in ages. So I wondered if the book was as good as the movie. So yea! I've only seen The Favorite and The Lobster and loved both. He can put so many creative layers seemlessly into films that watching them 2 or 3 times reveals still more and enjoyable again. And he gets the best out of the actors, I couldn't believe it was Emma Stone, she deserved that Oscar! I also loved her in the miniseries Maniac. Worth checking out. I will get this book out of the library asap! ;)

Thank you Anna! The movie was amazing, I was completely awed by it, and yes, Emma Stone was incredible! The differences between book and movie make sense to me, but the book is something rather special too, there are so many interesting layers to explore with this story :-)

Jennifer Welsh What a wonderful review, Gabrielle! I adored the film, and am happy to see that the book captures that very same innocence which made it so alive. I’ve read mixed things about the book, so I’m encouraged, thank you!

Thank you Jennifer! You have to enjoy the pastiche format for the book, which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I loved the structure; it's different from the film that way, so they are quite interesting as separate versions of the story.
