All the stars in the world!
ADDENDUM on 12-30-2023: Yes, Hello Beautiful is indeed my number one favorite book of 2023, and that is saying a lot as I have read many wonderful books this year.
By 30% I knew this book was in serious contention for my book of the year despite it being only March and despite the fact I have had some exceptional reads already. By 50% I knew this book had a real chance of landing on my 10 Best Reads of MY LIFE list. This puts it right up there with Beartown, Us Against You, A Pray for Owen Meany, and A Little Life—some pretty good company.
This is my kind of book. My absolute favorite kind of book—a character-driven saga, deep in relationships, and the meanings of those relationships. A book with the depth of the ocean that makes it nearly impossible to put down until the final page. One that will throw me into a book slump as it will be extremely difficult to find a worthy follow-up. One that I will clearly remember for years to come. That’s how I feel about this book.
I am giving bonus stars for execution. This family saga spans almost 50 years. Ms. Napolitano writes with all the skill of Fredrik Backman who up to this point was in a very small class (with William Kent Krueger) of writers who I feel can dissect the human psyche like virtually no one else. Ms. Napolitano’s prose is rich without being flowery or cloying; it is simply some of the most beautiful composition I have encountered. The story is complex with a plethora of characters who I never confused; the members of the large extended family in particular were all well developed and real, so real. Themes include rejection, loss, loneliness, unfulfilled expectations, suicidal ideation, betrayal, the power of friendship, the strength of family, forgiveness, and second chances.
This novel grabbed me right from the beginning and would not let go. I pick and choose my books carefully, generally selecting only those that have a surefire chance of earning 4 or 5 stars from me; thus, I read a lot of good ones. But it’s rare that a book has the kind of effect on my heart that this one did. I’m going to have to search hard to find another just as worthy.
I cannot recommend a book more highly than Hello Beautiful. If you are even considering reading this one, go for it. It’s one in a thousand.
I want to thank Net Galley, Random House Publishing, and Ann Napolitano for an advanced copy. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.

So, it seems like you liked it. 😏
Great review, makes me want to read it next, but unfortunately, I'm sure it's too new to get soon.

I cannot wait! I recently read Dear Edward and loved it so I’m sure I’ll be as satisfied as your are after reading this one. Great review Christine.
It's always a treat to read a review from someone who feels so strongly about the book. Wonderful, Christine!

With a recommendation like that one, how could I resist adding it to the TBR? I seldom read new books, but I will make a point of seeking this one out. Isn't life good when we become careful choosers of our books!

Thanks so much, Chris. Yes, like those books I mentioned above plus a few more like Tana French’s The Likeness, Alfred Lansing’s Endurance, and John Boyne’s The Heart’s Invisible Furies.

Thanks for your post, Sara! I am excited that my author friend is going to review this one. 😊 I am keenly interested in what you think. It’s pretty intense, but in such a good way for me. Yes! I am in the middle of the Great TBR Dump, trying not to waste any of my finite number of reads left in my lifetime. I know I don’t have time for the 2000 on my list!

Thanks, Jayme. I was so disappointed when I saw it didn’t do it for you. On the flip side, I do appreciate and actually enjoy seeing what others think are the downsides of the books I love. Different perspectives are great when they are simply that—differences and not plain hate (think US politics!!!)

Enticing review, Christine! :)) I liked the cover but wasn't sure if this one was for me, now I'm adding it! :)
Oh, Christine, I wish I'd seen your lovely review sooner! I loved this one, too - even more than Dear Edward! It was such a beautiful, if occasionally heartbreaking, story!

Thanks, my friend! I loved Dear Edward, but like you, I loved this more. Definitely all the emotions.

Tremendous review, Christine! I'm with you on all your points! I'm about 75% in and have to admit that I have seriously WEPT during every reading session - it's made me so emotional!!! But I just love it, despite having a terrible dislike of Julia. If something doesn't change soon, I fear she'll experience a serious comeuppance. It'll be one she deserves and it won't be pretty! For goodness sakes, she's on the verge of ruining that brainy child of hers! So I can't wait to finish - probably tomorrow - to see what happens!!

Thanks so much, Jodi! I agree that this is one of the most emotionally engrossing books I’ve read in a long time. So glad it’s having such an effect on you too!

A super review, Christine! I bought this just in case my Beloved might want to listen to it, as I know it is not for me! :))
Oh wow! I guess I’m going to have to add this to my TBR check library list I have on Amazon! Fantastic review dear, Chris 🥰

I agree, I agree, I agree! I don't know if I'll read anything this year that will even come close to topping "Hello Beautiful." It's a masterpiece.
Bravo Christine... Bravo!! I have put this on my "to get" list. I happen to already have Dear Edward so I think I'll pick it up next to experience this author sooner rather than later. I feel for you though, because when a book fills you in every way as this one obviously did, it's hard to find another gem. Good Luck Friend : )
Thanks all of you guys for the kind words and for your enthusiasm for reading this one! You will not be sorry!!!! And so sorry for late response.

Christine, I'm so sorry to read about your health issues. I imagine you've got an excellent team of carers, though, so before too long you'll be right as rain. All the very best to you!🌸🌹🌻🌷🌼

Thanks so very much, Jodi! I am so pleased you got as emotional about this one as I did! If you have one or two others that affected you as much as this one, please share! And I am super lucky to be in an area with stellar health care, so I know I am in good hands. I feel like I’m starting to turn the corner.
