This is definitely among the top five of the most pointless books I've read in the past 12 months, top ten most pointless I've ever read. We just get involved with the introductory character, then hear about her broken childhood, then suddenly we are thrust into another character's story that for a long while seems to have virtually nothing in common with the story line, then a long, drawn-out description of the making of the drum in which I zoned out so many times that I frankly did not care anymore. Suddenly, there are new characters that truly do have no connection whatsoever to the drum, then all of the characters are connected in a vague way near the end, but by then I didn't care at all about any of the characters or what happened to them. I suppose to some they would see the beauty in the traditions and beliefs of the tribe, but I just found the writing un-engaging and it nearly bored me to tears. I will try another book by this author that I have heard is better, but I don't have high hopes.

Are you serious? Can't you even appreciate the beauty of Erdrich's imagery? Before you take the time to read, don't you do a little research on the author? Maybe you should!

Alana I did not do research on the author, she was the pick for a book club. If you've read my other review, you would see that I rated another book by the same author very highly. I did not care for the particular way she wrote this story. Just my preference. There are several others who felt the same way about this book, readers who have great taste that I also respect. It's ok to have a difference of opinion on a particular book. And no, I don't research every author, because not every reading adventure is a book report for me; I like to dive into something without having any preconceived notions so I can take the book for what it is.

Cindy Robins I was disappointed in this book too, especially after reading Round House and a couple others. The story was disjointed and the character development sadly lacking.

The Master Butchers Singing Club was very enjoyable for me, felt like a completely different author. I hated this one, though... SO boring and tedious.

Sher Alltucker I tried and tried to read this. I couldn't get to anything good. Over and over again....I tried. I just couldn't latch onto anything. I even tried skipping ahead. I finally gave up. I saw that quote from the book. I didn't get to that. Just not for me. evidently.

Alana Sher, you might try a different one of her books. I had a very different experience with other books, but this one didn't do it for me. Some authors are like that...either a big hit or a really bad dud.

But yes, I only finished this one because I listened to audio...otherwise I would have quit.
