I read to 50% then speed read to an unsatisfying, predictable conclusion. This book has been much hyped but for me it fell into the category of a tired trope that has been done before. Many times. The disintegration of a marriage, generational neglect and abuse, the "bad seed", weak ineffectual men, nature vs nurture.
The majority of the book is written as one long letter by Blythe to her husband, which becomes repetitive and boring. The chapters move back and forth between time periods and characters, without a heading to indicate who and when. WHY?? It's a stylistic choice that annoys me to no end. As do incomplete sentences, which this book has in abundance.
I was left disappointed, and even worse, bored to tears. I'm trying to find one thing I found interesting, but I'm coming up blank. There was nothing interesting, riveting, or illuminating. Some books I can recognize as having value but for one reason or another they aren't for me. This isn't one of those times.
Finishing it was perhaps not the best decision I’ve made this year, but oh well. Perhaps I'm being harsh but with so many glowing reviews and hype surrounding this book, my review will barely make a dent.
2 stars because I finished it. Kind of. I'm being generous.

I could see myself being annoyed with this as well. I am bothered by the same things you mentioned. Thanks for your honest review!

Oh wow, this sounds awful, Jan. I had no desire to read it before and I certainly don't now. I rarely like the letter-format or jumping around in time without letting the reader know what to expect. As for incomplete sentences, occasionally they add impact. Most of the time they're annoying and reflect poor writing skills. Sometimes you wonder if a book went through a copy editor or straight from the author's computer to press.
You have me feeling vindicated for giving up at 15%. Great review! Some books just get way too much hype and I don't know why!!
Great review, Jan! I'm surprised you finished it. I love your honesty, and I hope you have a fantastic book lined up!

And a gold star? 😉 You are a much nicer person than me :)

Glad I could confirm your wise decision 😉 You're right that sometimes incomplete sentences can add impact, unless they are overdone. Which was the case here IMO.
She previously worked for Penguin so maybe she had inside contacts? And she secured a multi-million dollar deal. I don't get it. I think I am just way out of sync of what is popular and entertaining to most people these days because everyone seems to love it 🤷🏻♀️

Oh Katie, you are the smart one! I really don't get the heaps of praise for this one either.

Oh noooo! I have this one Jan and I am so worried I will feel the same. Something about this book just doesn't appeal to me. I bought it because of the hype though...we know how that goes. Sorry it wasn't better for you. Fantastic review though.

Thanks Michael. I am too! I think I finished it just so I could write the contrarian review 😂

eek, sorry! We do know how hype goes, but sometimes we are surprised. I do hope you side with the majority this time 🤞

Thanks for the honest review. After reading more and more reviews I'm just not going to read this one. Sorry I requested it :(
The book didn't sound interesting (to me) but got such good reviews that I thought "well maybe..." But no. Your review convinced me. I'm not gonna. Thank you!

Linda, that was my exact thought process :( Good choice to skip.

Very fair and honest review Jan. Nothing to be sorry for at all! It's never fun to be the outlier but it happens to the best of us! On to the next one!
It sure is being “pushed”... the marketing is all over social media and I’ve recoiled simply based on that. Your review affirmed my suspicions. I dislike the epistolary format at the best of times and this sounds like a slog - nothing new from another unreliable narrator. You have saved me the time! Great review, JanB!
Thanks for the courage to be an outlier, Jan! I’ve been nosing around this book for a while but haven’t gotten myself to put a hold on it. It’s one of those books that I think I *should* read just because of the glowing reviews. Now I don’t think I will. Thanks for the excellent, honest review.
I got this from the library today, but I'm not sure I even want to start it. I really hate the "bad seed", dad doesn't see what's going on, etc., etc. books. My instinct tells me I won't like this. I love your insights, Jan!

Thanks Lori, it certainly isn;'t fun, especially when there's so much love for a book. But no book is for every read, right? 🤞 for my next read :)

haha...yes, definitely pushed...it's has amazing PR. Which mystifies me. The book I read before this one has an average overall rating and it was a 5 star read for me, and then there's this one....sigh...
I think you were right to recoil! Nothing new at all for those of us who've been around for a bit of time 😉

Thanks Laurie, I too had decided against reading it but then caved in due to the hype. Maybe my purpose was to give the contrarian opinion? 😉

You are so right. It was all over my Facebook so I bought it as a treat for myself and personally I found it SO BORING I read two others in between. This is going in the give away pile.
Yikes, Jan! So sorry this was a complete dud! Being bored to tears is never good. Whenever this happens to me, where a book everyone else loves draws zero interest and emotion in me (I'm looking at you, Station Eleven), I'm left wondering if I read a different book. Now I'm glad I decided not to add this one to my to-read list.
I've been looking forward to this one, but your review persuades me to temper my anticipation just a bit. Appreciate your thoughts on it, JanB.
I so appreciate your honesty here Jan! I disliked it for other reasons than you stated here (mainly the portrayal of the mothers and my personal experiences and the fact that I just couldn't relate not being a mother myself) but I appreciate that it wasn't just me that didn't love this story. Sorry you were bored to tears though and finished anyway (that's not like you thus I'm sorry you suffered through.) I sure hope you love your next book!
Great review, Jan! Sorry it was disappointing for you. Now I'm was was declined for the ARC. On to more enjoyable books.
Nothing worse than being bored with a book, Jan. It always makes me resent losing the time . Hope your next one is fantastic.
I had a certain feeling about this one despite all of the fanfare around it and while I'm sorry it was such a drag for you, I can put it out of my mind. IMO, you weren't harsh enough, but I'm a bit testy these days. 😂

Thanks Jayme, it's a good reminder to not cave into hype when I have doubts. And I may have read this just so I could offer an alternate opinion 😉

Thanks Farrah. I was a little cranky, but I do wish I had loved it too. I had high hopes.
