Nope, a 10 (-12) year old child narrator that thinks like a grown up just doesn't work for me.
Plus: When almost everything the narrator sees is compared to some form of snot or poop or bile or vomit the 'gross-ness' gets, well... boring.

Ah, sorry about that...

Nashwa S you saved me a decent amount of money. I was about to order this and thought to check it on goodreads! That was a good decision.

Always happy to be of service :-) :-)

Gaetano Ceneri I totally agree! I was thinking the same thing about a 12 year old thinking like an adult. Also I absolutely had no empathy for any of the characters including the three children. I hate to say this but I almost cheered when she fell into the freezer at the end. I know: that’s bad, but I really didn’t think that a 12 year old that so obsessed with death would be so violent. I understand the obsession with death but I don’t think that 12-year-olds would ever act that way, regardless of how rural and Dutch the setting is.

Yep, exactly!

Suus I knew I could skip this one. It sounded like a horrible and depressing typical Dutch book. Thnx for confirming my suspicions. ;)

Sleeping with books Oh boy, yes this was difficult. I listened to the audiobook. It was pretty intense towards the end with the abusive brother. Not entirely without literary value.

Leah Rachel von Essen That's funny to me because the 'poop' and snot stuff was precisely what made it so childish for me.

That's interesting!

I do agree with plenty of bad reviews on the book, and I had a lot of complicated thoughts, but I thought that all the poop/snot/etc talk was super childish.

Marija Yes, thank you! I see many people disgustes by descriptions. Sure, they are not pleasant, but the book is actually not that shocking, just boring.

Glad to hear I'm not alone!

Eva Wallgren Mariejke was born 1991. The book came 2000, her thoughts I guess was not invented that year. It takes a lot of thoughts until she comes to write this brilliant novel.
