I doubt there is a single person here on Goodreads that has not heard at least a hint of the controversy surrounding this book. I’m also confident that nearly every reader has at least a basic idea of the synopsis of American Dirt. So, I’m not really touching either of those elements in my review. I am a white woman, living in upstate New York, thousands of miles from Mexico. I have no real personal experience regarding the Mexican migrant issue, and therefore cannot speak to whether or not author Jeanine Cummins writes a genuine representation of the crisis or not. I don’t even dare to attempt to do so. What I can write about, however, is my own reading experience of this novel.

First of all, I was super excited to pick up this book. I lovingly cataloged it at my library when it first arrived. I put my name first on the list to get it on publication day. After all, it was hailed as “a new American classic” and was compared to the masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath. Naturally, this did give me pause, because both are tall orders to fill. Could this proclamation be true?! And it’s such a relevant topic! I need to read this book.

I like to learn something when I read. Even if a book is labeled as fiction, I hope to garner some useful information regarding the topic surrounding a group of fictional characters. I want to feel as if I am in the shoes of a character or two, understanding what they are enduring for this short period of time we are together. To my disappointment, I was completely underwhelmed by American Dirt. It was far too melodramatic for my taste.

It starts with a big bang right from page one. But for me it was too much. It seemed to be forced in order to provide the catalyst for the rest of the novel, an extravagant attempt to try to gain my sympathy. I felt an instant disconnection from the characters. I tried to remain hopeful about accompanying Lydia and Luca on their harrowing journey through Mexico towards their one glimmer of hope, the United States. And there were scenes that were charged with danger. Naturally, I hoped this pair and their fellow migrants would survive the risks. One additional thing that bothered me throughout – some characters were just not believable. I couldn’t help but think repeatedly “would so-and-so really act or speak this way in this situation?” One example would be too-wise beyond his years, eight-year-old Luca. I was further bothered by what seemed like an abundance of clichés. For example, the beautiful teenaged girl from Honduras – the threat of rape menaced her at every turn. Why not the arguably less stunning but perhaps still attractive mother of a little boy? Would not any migrant woman be at risk from such danger? I guess what I’m trying to say is that the characters were more like cut-outs, in my opinion. I missed the depth of characterization that I find so appealing in my favorite kind of novel. It doesn’t help that while reading this one, I also had the pure pleasure of another book that really did tick off all the boxes – including nuanced characters, equally relevant social and political issues, and perilous situations.

I wouldn’t tell anyone they should not read this book. If it at all interests you, by all means, pick it up and make your own judgments. For me, the writing was mediocre and I was disappointed to remain a far-removed observer. None of the thousands of miles separating my home from the Mexican border were diminished after finishing the last page. But I truly hope it does get people talking about an extremely important issue. The best way to read this would be with a buddy, so you can bounce ideas off one another. I may not have made it to the end otherwise - muito obrigada, Pedro! I will continue my quest to become more educated on the topic.

ReadAlongWithSue ★⋆. ࿐࿔ Lots of controversy over this subject matter so gonna wait to see what you think Candi

Candi Yes, stay tuned, Sue ;)

Sarah I'm very interested to hear your thought too! I have really been wanting to read this, but I can't decide if I should, in light of the controversy.

Candi Yes, there's a lot of talk about this right now, Sarah!

Robin I’m reading this now too, Candi... oh gosh, really not sure about it (only 4 chapters in) and the least of it is that damn Oprah seal of approval on the front cover! Gag.

message 6: by Julie (new)

Julie G Oh, no, not the Oprah seal! I usually try to peel those off.

Candi I was definitely not won over straight from the beginning, Robin!

And that seal! I didn't realize it had the "seal" at first!

Candi Julie wrote: "Oh, no, not the Oprah seal! I usually try to peel those off."

Haha! Good idea!

Pedro Candi, the "seal" was not there at first. :s

Pedro Robin, looking forward to your review. Ahahah.

Candi Pedro wrote: "Candi, the "seal" was not there at first. :s"

Okay, so I didn't just overlook it then, Pedro! :)

Cheri Looking forward to tour thoughts on this one, Candi!

Dustin Candi, I'm completely on the fence about this one, and as an admirerer of your reviews, I'm VERY much looking forward to your thoughts on it!

Paula K Insightful review for this controversial book, Candi. Well done!

message 20: by Sandra (new) - added it

Sandra Interesting review Candi. I haven’t heard anything thing about this book before now, so I was intrigued to read your review. Shame it did not live up to expectations!

message 21: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Thank you, Candi, you've saved me some time to read a really good book instead. Your review pretty much says what Ron Charles of the Washington Post said, melodramatic and mediocre writing. Like you, the negative press doesn't influence me, but a well-read friend who tells the truth does. I do appreciate you taking a bullet for the rest of us.

message 22: by Dana (new)

Dana Thanks for your review, Candi. I’m wishing now I hadn’t picked this for my BOTM choice.

Julie Ehlers Great review, Candi. I have an ARC of this but I suspect I'll end up feeling similarly to you. What was the publisher thinking of with the Grapes of Wrath comparison? Who could ever live up to that? If you want a short but really good book about these issues, I recommend Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ Terrific review, Candi; I appreciated getting your honest feelings about it rather than focusing on the controversy surrounding it.

message 25: by Robin (new) - rated it 1 star

Robin I am FURIOUS about the blurb on the cover, mentioning John Steinbeck. I can't get over it! This is a terribly written book. You wrote an eloquent and kind review (and I agree with all your points). I'll be writing my review soon (probably less eloquent and far less kind).

Candi Julie wrote: "Very nice, honest review, Candi! I hope your next book is a better fit! 💖"

Thank you, Julie! When paired with The Little Drummer Girl during the same week, there just was no comparison for me. Others may feel differently ☺

Candi Paula wrote: "Insightful review for this controversial book, Candi. Well done!"

Thanks so much, Paula! This was certainly not an easy book for me to review 😊

Candi Sandra wrote: "Interesting review Candi. I haven’t heard anything thing about this book before now, so I was intrigued to read your review. Shame it did not live up to expectations!"

Thank you, Sandra. I think it's risky for a book to be compared to classic literature that has stood the test of time. Too much hype on this one.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) great honest review :)

Tatevik doesn’t get notifications I only yesterday saw this book and wanted to understand the hype. Some writers even started a petition against this book and addressed it to Oprah.

Karen Candi, I loved it and I did learn a lot.. sorry it wasn’t good for you!

message 32: by Brandice (new)

Brandice I’m sorry this didn’t work out but I really liked your review, Candi! The controversy surrounding the book and its timely topic aside, the reviews of the quality of the writing and excerpts I read from it, just did not draw me in. I hope you like your next book!

Richard (on hiatus) A fine review Candi ......... I’m fascinated by books that divide opinion to this extent. As I said to Pedro, I’m looking forward to seeing how I feel about this one.

message 34: by Laysee (new)

Laysee Candi, such a great idea to buddy read a divisive book with a friend. Appreciate your review that is based on your own reactions to the writing and yardstick of what makes a good book. (All the hype and controversy is discouraging me from wanting to read this.)

message 35: by Ken (new)

Ken I get my American Dirt on the front page of the newspapers. ;-)

Interesting review!

Candi Diane wrote: "Thank you, Candi, you've saved me some time to read a really good book instead. Your review pretty much says what Ron Charles of the Washington Post said, melodramatic and mediocre writing. Like yo..."

I really appreciate your comment, Diane. I know there are a lot of people that liked this one, but at the same time I wanted to reflect what did not work for me, so that others can make a well-rounded decision on whether or not to read this. I'm all about the writing foremost, and everything else usually falls into place after that. It just didn't happen here.

Candi Dana wrote: "Thanks for your review, Candi. I’m wishing now I hadn’t picked this for my BOTM choice."

Dana, I'm always happy to share my thoughts. Take them with a grain of salt and read some other reviews! If anything, it will generate some good discussions with the group :)

Angela M is taking a break. Candi , I got more from this one than you did , but I appreciate your thoughts as always. I hope that some good comes from the controversy over this .

message 39: by JanB (new) - rated it 5 stars

JanB Sorry you didn’t enjoy it Candi. I’m buddy reading it now and enjoying it. I’ve googled some of the issues the book portrays which has led me to a greater understanding. (Btw, I think it was said that having a young child is a form of protection protection against rape - a weird form on honor among the rapists.)

Zoeytron Oh, dear. Starting to get the idea of holding off on this one, maybe giving it a good lettin' alone altogether. I appreciate your thoughts on it, Candi.

message 41: by Gil (new)

Gil A wonderful review, Candi. I’ve always admired your ability to write clear and balanced reviews, and I appreciate your focus here on stylistic elements—character and narration, particularly—especially since much has been written about the issue of who should tell this story. I was originally going to skim this out of curiosity of the style but based on your thoughts I don’t think it’s even worth that. I’m sorry that it didn’t work for you, and I hope your next read will be a good one. :)

message 42: by Sara (new) - added it

Sara I had marked this one to read, then marked it not when I read the reviews that detailed its flaws, then back to "to read" when I decided I ought to just make up my own mind...and now, finally, a review by a reader I know gets things right--off the TBR and moving on.

I so appreciate your helping me decide this one, Candi. Your reviews are always so clear and cogent, and our views so often similar, that I know I need to save my precious time for something better written. Like you, I am always seeking to know more about this situation, so the subject matter is still a draw, just this particular book I will scrub.

message 43: by Beata (new)

Beata Thank you, Candi, for your review🍀💞it is well-balanced and what you do not approve of, I wouldn't like either ... I guess I'll remove this novel from my holds ...

message 44: by Julie (new)

Julie G I'm laughing in bed right now, just imagining the delight Robin is experiencing at having read your review, Candi.
I haven't read this and won't be (I've already read Where the Crawdads Sing so I've already met my quota), but I couldn't help but think of T.C. Boyle's The Tortilla Curtain, after reading your review. I kept looking around me as I read it (even though no one was there) and shrugging my shoulders, like. . . is no one else grasping how contrived this is?

Melissa Crytzer Fry Great review, Candi. I appreciate your comments about your reaction to the beginning. I'm not sure if most readers realize that the beginning quinceanera scene is based on a true event that happened in Guerrero State. I'm off to read your review of the book that DID work for you. Appreciate your insights as always!

message 46: by megs_bookrack (new)

megs_bookrack Excellent and fair review, Candi. Well done!

Candi Julie wrote: "Great review, Candi. I have an ARC of this but I suspect I'll end up feeling similarly to you. What was the publisher thinking of with the Grapes of Wrath comparison? Who could ever live up to that..."

Thank you, Julie. I think it's almost unfair to an author when a publisher makes such a comparison. It's hard to not expect a book to live up to those expectations, even when you realize it's just a sort of gimmick. I will definitely take a look at the piece you have recommended - and I really appreciate that :)

Candi Jenna wrote: "Terrific review, Candi; I appreciated getting your honest feelings about it rather than focusing on the controversy surrounding it."

Thanks, Jenna. I didn't feel I had the right to criticize certain aspects of this book. I'd really need to do a lot more of my own research first! And then again, it is fiction...

Candi Robin wrote: "I am FURIOUS about the blurb on the cover, mentioning John Steinbeck. I can't get over it! This is a terribly written book. You wrote an eloquent and kind review (and I agree with all your points)...."

Robin, I admit that the mention of Steinbeck is one of the reasons I added this book, before all of the controversy began! It's not fair to the reader or the author, in my opinion. Thanks so much for reading my thoughts on it, and for your lovely comment! I am VERY eager to read your review. Let me go get a coffee roll and a good coffee ready :)
