Sword of Destiny is a huge step down from The Last Wish.

I’ll be lying if I say I’m not worried about how I’ll fare with the series after reading Sword of Destiny. I have heard many mixed things regarding the main novels of the series, especially in its ending, but tons of praises seem to have been given to the first two collections of short stories. I fully understand that technically this is Sapkowski’s first published collection of stories in The Witcher Saga even though it chronologically takes place after The Last Wish. But still, I expected more out of it because I enjoyed reading The Last Wish, and of course, I love the video games adaptation so much. However, I felt so mixed about this collection of short stories.

“There is never a second opportunity to make a first impression.”

Unlike The Last Wish, there doesn't seem to be a coherent sense of continuity between the stories contained in this collection. It is six short stories put into this book. In The Last Wish, in the present time frame, we have Geralt recovering, and the content told in this time frame chapters reflects the short story we will get to read. Everything felt more random and fragmented in Sword of Destiny. But that, in essence, IS what a collection of short stories mean. What caused my mixed feelings on Sword of Destiny was due to my dislike of the first four out of six short stories here. And I can't even claim that I loved the last two titles; they were alright, but not amazing.

Picture: Sword of Destiny by Navar

Let's start with the first two short stories: The Bounds of Reason and A Shard of Ice. Although these two were not boring to read, they were also frustrating. The main point of these two stories is simple: Geralt and Yennifer fight like teenage YA characters. Coming into this book from the games and the TV show adaptation, it actually felt cringe to read their bickering and flings. I need to note, and I know this will sound like sacrilege, that I am not a fan of Yennifer. Not in the games, and certainly not in the books so far. Honestly, I dislike her even more now after reading A Shard of Ice. But at least that's expected.

The third short story, Eternal Fire, on top of being one of the most boring stories I have read, somehow, has also made me incredibly dislike Dandelion. Dandelion in Eternal Fire has a mouth of an intolerable Donald Duck here. Yabbering, yabbering, yabbering, like we have to pay attention to this pitiful guy. I like Dandelion in the TV show adaptation and the games, but here? Nope. Seriously, a few days have passed since I read this short story, and all I remember now is only him being infuriating.

“Well, what can I say, it’s a base world,’ he finally muttered. ‘But that’s no reason for us all to become despicable.”

A Little Sacrifice was okay, but the development and the conclusion of the character stories here felt rushed. It would have benefited more for not being a short story. And finally we arrive at the last two short stories: Sword of Destiny and Something More. We finally meet Ciri in the books for the first time in the titular title, Sword of Destiny. I liked this one. Ciri is one of my favorite characters in the games, and I am happy I get to see Geralt and Ciri's first moment of encounter. As for Something More, I feel the TV show adaptation did a better job on this part of the story. I still enjoyed reading the ending of this story, but overall, I feel like the execution in the TV show has more of an impact on me than this one.

“Because I know that in order to unite two people, destiny is insufficient. Something more is necessary than destiny.”

I am disappointed with Sword of Destiny, and hearing how many fans of the series hated the last book made me more reluctant to continue reading it. However, I will try to read one or two books in the main novels first before I finalize my decision. There's always a chance that Sword of Destiny is a one-time occurrence disappointment. Here's hoping that I will love Blood of Elves when I get to it this year.

Erick MacGregor Totally Agree, it gets much better in Blood of Elves

Binta Faye Ohhh so sad you didn't like It, I actually enjoyed it more than The Last Wish😅 I love the main series (including the ending) so I can't wait to hear your thoughts when you get to it 😄

I am truly glad to hear that, Erick! :)

Yeahh, I thought I would enjoy this one more, but it just didn't click well with me. I think The Last Wish was certainly better, but I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the entirety of the series! :)

Pete Very respectable review. I hope you find Blood of Elves much more enjoyable. :)

Thank you, Pete! I truly hope I'll enjoy Blood of Elves more! :)

Miscellaneous Allie Tbh if you don't like Yenn it may not be for you cos she features strongly in the entire series.

Petrik Allie wrote: "Tbh if you don't like Yenn it may not be for you cos she features strongly in the entire series."

Yeah, I think that might be the case. I chose Triss in the games, too. But I'll try Blood of Elves before I make the final decision to drop the series. :)

Read By Kyle Oh man, if you're already at the 2.5 star range I don't think you're going to like the series 🥲 the last wish was my favorite, it's been vastly downhill from there. I've been meaning to read Baptism of Fire for months now as a last chance for the series, but I finally decided yesterday if I wanted to give Baptism a chance it will be through ebook, and unhauled my entire series. I agree with every word you wrote in this review haha

Yeahhh, I am definitely worried about it. Blood of Elves will be my last chance to see whether I'll continue with it or not. :/

Hamad I finished the whole series last year and Unfortunately it gets worse!

Petrik Hamad wrote: "I finished the whole series last year and Unfortunately it gets worse!"

I'm starting to think it's not worth finishing the series, let my memory of this series be one of the game. xD

But I'll read Blood of Elves first and find out how that one will work!

Josh Honestly I enjoyed this one more than Last Wish or Blood of Elves.

Wick Welker I bailed on this series after Time of Content. The consistency of quality of these books is all over the place.

Natalia I never disagreed with you more 😙 not since Assassin’s Quest anyway 😉

Petrik Josh wrote: "Honestly I enjoyed this one more than Last Wish or Blood of Elves."

Seems like opinion is very mixed on this series! xD

Petrik Wick wrote: "I bailed on this series after Time of Content. The consistency of quality of these books is all over the place."

From the short stories, I can certainly see the inconsistent quality. I'll try the main novel, at least the first one, and see how I feel about it!

Petrik Natalia wrote: "I never disagreed with you more 😙 not since Assassin’s Quest anyway 😉"

Haha, agree to disagree. I think this (and Assassin's Quest) was boring and uninteresting. :D

Yes I think so. :D

message 22: by Suzy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Suzy Don’t bother 😅 I regretted how much time I put into this series. The Witcher is such a cool idea but you spend most of the time following Geralt through fields (and not even fields of battle, for the most part 🙄) and wishing you’d left it after the first short story collection. It’s such a shame but the books don’t do the premise justice.

Tyler Galligani Oh interesting, I have the opposite opinion on this series. I liked TLW but wasn't crazy about it, whereas I loved Sword of Destiny, especially the second half. Then I didn't really like Blood of Elves but loved Time of Contempt, then the rest was downhill for me until I eventually DNF'd the series before the last novel🤷🏻‍♂️ interested to see how you feel about the rest of the series. If you keep disagreeing with me then I may have to revisit it lol

Tyler Galligani I have to agree with Suzy on this one. The second novel was the peak of the series for me and I almost wish I had just stopped there. There's so much meandering around in the last novels, as if the author himself lost interest too.

This is what I keep on hearing and what makes me worry about it. I actually have heard most people enjoyed the first two collections of short stories, and I did enjoy The Last Wish, but this one is just disappointing. Following Geralt through fields seems like something that I love to do more in the game than reading. xD

I liked The Last Wish! I think having watched the TV show kinda kill the magic of reading Sword of Destiny book. I heard very mixed things regarding the main books, and my god, I heard from some fans of the series that they even DNFed the last book or wish they haven't read the last book after enjoying the series. Either way, I'll try Blood of Elves before I decide to continue with the series or not! :D

Hamad Petrik wrote: "Hamad wrote: "I finished the whole series last year and Unfortunately it gets worse!"

I did not play the games but the TV series was way better imo.

Zoe Agree with your review Petrik. I gave sword of destiny a generous 3 stars. The Last Wish was much better. I hope I like the novels too :)

After reading the first two, I certainly think (some casting I disagree aside) that the TV show is doing a great job adapting the books. I'm sure some fans of the book series will hate me for saying that. xD

Petrik Zoe wrote: "Agree with your review Petrik. I gave sword of destiny a generous 3 stars. The Last Wish was much better. I hope I like the novels too :)"

I was going to be generous and gave it 3 stars, but nah, I just didn't feel much towards this one. xD

I understand! :)

message 32: by Rich (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rich Price The ultimate like-hate series for me. Every time I was close to giving up there would be a good stretch of story, or an interesting scene or new character, before it lapsed into frustrating territory again.

At least it’s not that long as fantasy series go!

Petrik Richio wrote: "The ultimate like-hate series for me. Every time I was close to giving up there would be a good stretch of story, or an interesting scene or new character, before it lapsed into frustrating territo..."

I understand this feeling, Richio. I hope there will be more good than frustration for me as I move forward with the series!

Christopher Arrigali I enjoyed The Last Wish but it’s been all downhill from there for me. I just finished The Time of Contempt and it was hard to get through. I started Baptism of Fire today and am hoping things pick up. I hate to have to give up on a series.

I hate to give up on a series, too. I hope Blood of Elves will convince me to continue with it! :)

Malvika Candidly I don't like Yennifer either but I really appreciate how the author s made her a 3d fleshed out character instead of the cool girl/ I m the MC's love interest so I have to be the most unique unicorn tropes 1 finds regularly

I dunno, I can appreciate the intention, but I still don't think of her as a well-fleshed-out character. xD

message 38: by chump (new) - added it

chump Agreed. I DNF'd it a few years ago because it was such a slog

Fabio Mologni I actually found this one better than the last wish

Petrik Fabio wrote: "I actually found this one better than the last wish"

Ah I guess we have to agree to disagree then! :)

Chaitanya Sword of Destiny is actually my favourite in the series. If you didn't like that, you probably would get bored while reading Blood of elves.

Petrik Deepak wrote: "Sword of Destiny is actually my favourite in the series. If you didn't like that, you probably would get bored while reading Blood of elves."

I will still try Blood of Elves. But if that doesn't work, I will DNF the series. :)

Veiled wtf

R. A. Strich As I'm always saying: Witcher is at its best in the games. Perfect example for a story first being told in the wrong medium.
I like the books, but mostly *because* of the games, most of the times they are just okay, with the exception of specific scenes and sections.
But the short story collections I absolutely adore.
I cried so often during this collection alone, and same is true for Last Wish.
Though I also know, that the books in general are just not as good in English as in more "eastern" European languages. Not a language expert, but what I have seen/read kind of looks like it. And also makes sense a little, as the order, hirarchy and variety of words in a sentence is so vastly different in german/polish/etc. compared to English...
It just does not translate very well and so many sentences that have a huge impact on me on their own just feel wrong and strange in english. Or just meh - because of the "small" vocabulary the language has; among some other factors.
But I'm just rambling now and searching for reasons, because I've heard the same thing you say from so many english readers...
It's sad, though, as even I would say the main series has some major flaws and is not that easy to get through...
I recommend you learning polish or German or sth. like that, easy😌🤌🏼
(That way you could also read one of the best series ever, that never got translated into english with "Drachenelfen" by Bernhard Hennen ^^)

Yeah! Although I dislike this one, there's a caveat that comes with things being lost in translation. Many Polish readers have voiced this and I'm inclined to agree with them. 😃

Philip Grantham I love your reviews, as they have guided many decisions of mine, but I very much disagree with this one of yours, Petrik. I thought each story was wholesome and had enough continuity in them to be satisfied. Take care!
